My reading of the situation is the kid went and tried to hide it. He didn't tell the coaches he was going and told reporters not to let the info out. Similar to Pharaoh Brown visiting Oregon a few years ago without telling Hoke. I see nothing wrong with pulling a scholarship because of that, the commitment is a 2 way street.

I don't really have an answer for that, if it were me I'd want my commitments working out with regional talents, especially because FNL potentially has more talent than even the Nike Regionals.
Maybe Layne was banged up, I just saw someone tweet a picture of him sitting in the first row of the stands and he apparently didn't interact with coaches or anything. The issue with Cupp is probably that he went there secretly and was most likely trying to earn an offer.

I think the majority of coaches take the same approach, and I find nothing wrong with it really. The player was looking out for himself when he took that visit, which gives the coach every right to reciprocate. In the same way, a player should start looking around if a coach isn't treating him right (i.e. drops contact)

The kid should have nothing to hide if he was just going to workout, be seen, and experience the process and OSU. Obviously, he had an agenda or he would have let the staff know. I have no problem with Dantonio on this one. As a matter of fact, I like it that he pulled the scholarship.

Brass balls on a middling prospect (despite the past frothing of the Sparties). Why don't you just continue parroting the RCMB party line of "we can do better" and "we're elite in recruiting now" etc. etc.

Call me when he runs off a player with ranking.

Sparties..../smh

A kid has got his right to consider his options and go to school where he wants to go to school. But you should at least be upfront with the coaches about it. If you're actively looking to deceive a group of coaches to go visit another, then I think you deserve to have the scholarship yanked.

The concept of ethics and honesty ought to extend to the recruits in this situation just as much as it does the coaches.

He's a 17-18 year old kid. Save for the exceptionally mature ones, thoughts like these just really don't cross their minds. It may come across as common sense to us, but your brain doesn't fully develop and understand the concept of "consequences for your actions" until you turn 24-25. In other words, these kids generally think they're a lot more clever than they actually are.

That's not a knock on him, specifically. Most every kid his age is like that. I was, too. It'll be a tough learning experience for him.

Dantonio didn't pull Larry Scott's scholly when he went on some visits. I can understand if Gavin lied about it.

These coaches want these kids to make really early decisions and then won't let them go on other visits. Hey NCAA, early signing period seems to make perfect sense. So you definitely will never allow one.

When  kid visits another school, it reminds me of the old line, "Honey, I think we should start seeing other people."  Also, when  kid visits a dirty program like Ohio State or Alabama,. there is the risk of them taking a golden handshake becoming ineligible if caught.  Obviously, there is a big chance of them flipping due to that payout.

I still detest Dantonio as much as any coach in the game, but I won't criticize him for this move.

There's a huge, huge difference between "we won't save you a spot if you visit other schools," and "you're not welcome here if you go visit other schools."

EDIT: There's a huge, huge difference between "we won't save you a spot if you visit other schools," and "you're not welcome here if you hide a visit to other schools."

As mentioned before: Pharoah Brown was essentially the exact same situation

Claim to have this rule until a 5 star recruit decides he will put it to the test. Then suddenly the coaches seem to change their tune. That is unless you are a 2-3 star kid. So basically if kids commit to the coaches then the kids can't look around, but if the coaches commit to the kids by saying they will be around to coach them they are free to look for a new job the next day. This is just a simple case of adults being assholes to protect their own self interest, not the students.

Gofor2,

it doesn't sound like you understand how the policy works about when the coaches consider a kid "no longer committed" vs pulling his offer. A kid who visits somewhere else is considered "no longer committed" and risks losing his spot. It does not necessarily mean the coaches will stop recruiting the kid.

As for the injustice of kids having to commit in the first place. Yes. Agreed that is really problematic.

Not similar at all.   Plenty of MSU commits go visit other schools.  They have a running back out of D.C. area who was just at a Bama camp last week and got an offer.   I have to assume this guy was dishonest with Dantonio.

Gofor2

Deep down hate that comes from knowing that the other guy is better, and will always be better, knowing that no matter how hard you work, how hard you try that Urb's will always be better, a lot better. Same way UM football hates OSU football

Yup he was one of the first critics to come out against Urban recruiting kids that had already committed to other B1G schools. There also was an incident this summer at SMSB camp where Dantonio was on a local radio station doing a segment and Urban was supposed to come on after him. However Dantonio didn't want Urban to speak to local listeners and purposely kept his head phones on and made small talk with the host off air until Urban grew frustrated and angry and stormed off.

Has since evened the score, actually he is ahead by quite a bit. Dantonio hates that Meyer is a Elite coach tat can, and will take a MSU kid if he damn well wants to. Dantonio knows he has nothin on Meyer, so he just pouts and acts like a child. All the while Urb's is spankin that ass

Per Mike Wilson:

He did not let the Michigan State coaches know of his plans to go to Ohio State. His offer was yanked late last night. Arcuri got an offer as a result -- and it is a full offer.

I'm not sure if Michigan State is 100 percent done with Cupp after this, but right now, he would not be considered a commit.

Apparently this Cupp dude thought he was going to sneak into FNL and not get noticed. Ohio dude gonna Ohio.

Gofor2

July 27th, 2015 at 2:04 AM ^

tif Cupp was a high 4 star or 5 star kid Dantonio would not have pulled his offer. Honestly, this is the behavior of a " scared " coaching staff. Very cowardly. Coaches like Dantonio and Hoke tryin to limit kids being taken from them, that's all it is, coaches playing scared. The coaching greats like Meyer, Pete Carroll, Saban, they don't threaten there kids with this type shit. Of course they are not coaching scared either. Oh well, there are winners, and there are whiners

Dantonio did the kid a huge favor... I'm really happy he won't have to spend four years in East Lansing. This is a great day for that young man. He should go celebrate.

Process sucks especially for the 2-3 star level kids. Commit early to reserve a spot and there's a risk you've picked the wrong school but the right school doesn't have a spot later. Wait until you've taken all 5 officials, camped, etc and there may not be a spot anywhere in your top group. I agree with the earlier poster that there should be an early signing period but since that makes too much sense the NCAA will never allow it

Mr Miggle

July 26th, 2015 at 1:28 PM ^

he did, how would that help him? If he was locked in to MSU, would Meyer even let him participate? He could have stayed home if he was content going to MSU. He took a gamble that wouldn't have been available to him if he had signed the LOI.

I think having the opportunity of accepting an offer from his dream school is worth a lot. The ability to attend a camp after you've finished the recruiting process would seem far less important. Also, he might well have been allowed to attend if he had talked to MSU first.

Fuck everything about Dantonio. He's a cunt. I don't have any issue with what he did. I just hate him because he espouses to be a god-fearing, upstanding Christian and then spews nothing but hatred and vitriol towards Michigan. His behavior getting off the bus in 2010 solidified my hatred of the guy. FUCK HIM.

WolverineMac

July 26th, 2015 at 12:04 PM ^

But it's not shady either. Apparently he didn't tell the coaches he was going. Dantonio is fine with visits apparently just not ones there not aware of.

I have no problem with Hokes or Dantonios policy but feel that perhaps Dantonios was more appropriate for today's kids.

PapabearBlue

July 26th, 2015 at 12:32 PM ^

Yeah, I dont see the issue here. pulling a scholly offee would be crappy, but saying "we'll assume you arent committed anymore" is just being honest about the situation. if you are looking at other schools or considering other options then you in fact are NOT committed and the school shouldnt have to be either. this would be like telling a girl she wasnt allowed to date anyone else but you but you werent sure you wanted to date her so you wanted to go on a few other dates.

Larry Appleton

This is indeed exactly like Pharoh Brown. I don't blame Dantonio one bit. You have to have a trusting relationship with your supposed commits. That said, whereas Staee fans were universally trashing Hoke's policy as pure arrogance, they'll no doubt be fawning over Dantonio for doing the same thing. I suppose we could ask the RCMBers, since you know those losers are all reading this thread.
