(OT)Hail to the Victors & My Daughter

Submitted by MGrether on

So all throughout my wife's pregnancy, I would hold my iPhone up to her belly and play "Hail to the Victors" and "Let's Go Blue." My non-football loving wife would roll her eyes, but she would at least humor me.

My daughter is now 7 weeks old. When she cries, I can play "Hail to the Victors" and she will quiet right down. She had been crying a few minutes ago when I was holding her, and after two rounds of The Victors, she was fast a sleep. My wife, and more importantly my OSU in-laws, are dumbfounded and amazed. Daddy's little girl is a Wolverine.

So, lesson to you Daddies & Mommies to be... start'em young.

Go Blue! For it is truly GREAT to be a Michigan Wolverine!

Definitely. Go for it. 2-3 times a week was my regimen. My method of choice was the UMichClock on the iPhone. Put the speakers on the lower part of the belly, especially as you near the end as that is where the head will be.

One of the greatest things I've ever read! Will definately try this. This may spur an entire society of Wolverines, built from the mothers womb just by the greatest fight song around.

Thats a nice start. My daughter could sing Hail to the Victors at 3 years old and last week (shes now 6) , she drew a poster in school that said "Notre Dame SUCKS! Go Blue!"

Gotta be proud of that.

The nuns would hate that. Each and every one of them is a ND fan even if they hate football.

Trust me I know. I bet my principal, a nun, in grade school on the game two years running. I was 1--1. (This was in a gradeschool just south of the border.)

but I did start him when he was a month old. I would play NCAA on xbox live and he would perk up everytime I scored a TD and they played The Victors. By the time he was 1 he would play The victors on anything that could play music. By the time he was 1 1/2 he was singing the Victors word for word. He absolutely loves Mich football! So much in fact that I was watching a game on ESPN Classic when he was about 1 1/2 and I was about to go out for a little while. As I was walking out the door his mother tried to change the TV to cartoons and he lost it! He made her watch the game with her and she said "Great now I have 2 of yall!"

He's 2 years old and he loves to play football. He has already proclaimed himself to be the greatest football player in the world. Good news for Blue because he's already a silent commit for the class of 2026.

Why is he silent about it ? If he really doesn't mind the fact that Mike Hart is getting all these NFL HC job offers every year with insane salaries (with part ownership terms), he should just man up and make his commitment public. Michigan is still Michigan.

Jimmy Webb ( Sam's kid) says his gut does not have a good feeling about your kid.

Didn't play the fight song in the womb, but definately would sneak in a few bars of "The Yellow and Blue" as a lullaby on late night wake-ups. Nice soothing song. Now at 15 months she loves her Tate #5 onesie and likes to spike her plush Michigan football when daddy yells "touchdown!"

When we lived in Minnesota, we adopted an 18 month-old boy. At preschool, the classes taught, of course, the Gopher fight song.  I instructed him on how to sing the "Victors" loudly enough to be heard when the school presented their spring program; this was enhanced by the fact that he couldn't quite carry the tune, and so stood out a bit more than otherwise.

This was a seminal experience, and was repeated with my daughter, who regularly would taunt "Goldie" the mascot at various sporting events. They are now both staunch Wolverines, and have suffered with me through the last few years with no hint of wavering in their allegiance.

I have also been playing "Hail to the Victors" to the son growing inside my wife.  She doesn't understand it, but she will.  I already have his first picture gear laid out.  It is a Michigan onesie and new born hat.  He received his UM pacifiers for Christmas, and will be getting a jersey in time for football season next year.  I lobbied really hard to name him Mason Blue, but that didn't fly.

I am scared to death that the boy will insist on coming into this world around 2:30 on Jan. first, which would put it right in middle of the Gator Bowl. However, when Michigan leaves victorious it could be a great memory of his birth date.

I commend you on your efforts.  Well done.

I did the same thing - played Hail to the Victors when my wife was pregnant and even when my son was a newborn.  He is now three and is obsessed with Michigan football.  Obsessed.  On parent-teacher night at his pre-school last month, the first thing that his teacher said is "your son is obsessed with Michigan football - did one of you go there" (we live in NY).  We asked him what he wanted for Hannukah t his year and he said "a #16 Denard Jersey and hair in the back of my helmet."

Since age 2, he has been singing Hail to the Victors.  Every Saturday he asks who Michigan is playing, and when I tell him, he response "_____ sucks."  He can actually name almost the entire starting line-up (and Tate, of course) and tell you their number.  In short, he is on the right path.

I recommend the following product:

My son loved this from birth.

And I thought I was the only one that "abused" my kids like that :)!

While I didn't think of playing The Victors while my wife was pregnant (fail!), I did sing it to both of my kids soon after they were born.  Before each one's first birthday, they were humming it, and able to do the "fist pump" at Hail.  Despite never living in Michigan, my teen-aged son is now a total M fanatic (and Wings, and Lions, too)  I was able to take him to his first ever Michigan sporting event when the soccer team played at Maryland, which he really enjoyed.   When he found out that I got our family tickets for the Gator Bowl, he went completely nuts.  Good times when a dad can get that kind of (positive) reaction from a teen-ager!

My two year old daughter now says Go Blue and fist pumps for any block M or M she sees. Kids in her daycare are imitating her when they read books. Her teacher had the kids say Go Blue to me when I picked her up during tOSU week. Proud papa!!
