OT: Zeke Pike ejected at 7 on 7 tourney

My twitter account has been blowing up about Zeke Pike getting thrown out of a 7 on 7 tourney for throwing a ball at an official. I first saw it on Bruce Feldman's twitter page. This is not good coming from a highly touted recruit. I dont know the whole extent of the story, so Im not going to divulge into at all, but I hope this is not a sign of things to come. Again, I do not want to speculate about an 18 year old kid who I do not know anything about except that he is one of the nation's top high school qbs. Just thought Id inform you guys and see what you think about this whole situation.

Honestly, if he just tossed

Honestly, if he just tossed the ball at him out of frustration I don't think it's a big deal. If he wound up a rocket and blasted the ref in the face then I could see it being an issue.

There have been several times

There have been several times in my life that if I was within throwing distance of a referee, he would be wearing whatever substance I was holding like a gorilla mask.  And I think I'm pretty well adjusted.

The more I think about how seething mad I get at refs, the more I realize that in the hundreds of organized sporting events I've played in, I have only been ejected once for arguing with the refs.  I don't know what a TV does to your pysche, but it seems to ilicit a more serious rage response.  Perhaps that's why the internet is such a mean place...

Yeah, this is almost certainly a huge character flaw and probably represents an immense underlying psychological issue. /s

Obviously throwing a ball at a ref is a bad idea, but let's not blow this out of proportion.

Kid's got fire

I'm sure it can be harnessed, but you can't coach that kind of attitude.  I think Hoke could harness it and use it to their advantage.  I'd rather have an attitude and fire in a football recruit than the opposite.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head that you could do with Ultra. Most of my wishes would probably take Brian altering some stuff.

I'll let you know if I come up with anything though.

Ya, I have no clue if he just tossed it at him, or if he did a 5 step drop and threw a bullet. Whatever he did, it was obviously severe enough to warrant an ejection. Who knows though. Everything gets blown out of proportion these days, so I guess we will have to wait and see.

This may not be meaningless

If the story is true, ejections, especially for actions that threaten referees, are serious.

I'm surprised that so many folks immediately seem to excuse the player's behavior.

I'd like to wait to see exactly what happened before commenting further.

But let's not be so blinded by wanting talented recruits that we are willing to accept players with bad attitudes -- if that's what this episode suggests.

Seriously

As a IM referee working for Rec Sports at U of M, I agree that this is a pretty big deal.  I've reffed games where players have thrown balls at each other and have immediately been ejected for the game, sometimes forcing their teams to forfeit.  This situation is even more serious than those above especially since we are more defenseless than the players.  If this story is as serious as it suggests, then I'm disappointed in this recruit since it takes a big lack of sportsmanship to do something like that.

In all fairness though, IM

In all fairness though, IM refs never interject early enough. I've been in numerous games where things are getting chippy and asked an IM ref to say something before things get out of hand, and they usually do nothing.

Are you really comparing

Are you really comparing "reffing" IM sports to people who do it for a living? Unless this was a Varsity Blues type situation where he rocketed the pass at the ref's face its probably not a big deal.

I wouldn't be too concerned

I wouldn't be too concerned if he came to Michigan because honestly, do you think coaches, fans, higher-ups, etc would allow behavior like that at Michigan? If anyone has to mature their personality, I think UoM is the place to do it.

Sometimes the homerism...

If this was an Ohio State commit, we'd be calling it the second coming of TP.  I agree we shouldn't jump to conclusions, but throwing the ball at an official is ALWAYS a bad sign.  It may be relatively minor, but is still worse than if he had never done it.

It isn't "always a bad sign". Sometimes a ref is just being a dick or rude and in a 7 on 7 tournament the repercussions aren't bad.

It isn't "always a bad sign" ... really?

You're justifying it on the basis that a ref is being a dick? You don't think that refs are dicks in BCS level football?

If it actually happened and it wasn't a misunderstanding—like Pike lobbing the ball to an official who wasn't looking for it—there's no way it's not a huge red flag. That's Ryan Mallett/Ryan Leaf kind of behavior.

I'm saying "why not?". He

I'm saying "why not?". He isn't ruining a team's season or anything and I'm sure the majority of people on here have thrown a ball at someone in a low consequence setting. And no, it's not Mallet/Leaf like behavior. I don't see any text of him partying epically, doing narcotic drugs, or anything of that sort. He's a kid playing football in high school lapses in judgement and anger control are bound to happen.

Who hasn't wanted to chuck a ball at a ref in their lives? Better to get it out of the way at 18 so as to have the "young and dumb" excuse. It's out of his system now, now come to Michigan and win.

I punched a teammate in the face during a rebounding drill when I was a senior.  I was kicked out of practice and everything was cool the next day.  I have been successful without something like that coming up again.

Come to Michigan!

Most of us "got it out of the way" without ever actually doing it.  Let's not rationalize this.  It's not necessarily a deal-breaker, but it raises concern.

You all do realize this was just something posted on twitter and not gospel at this point. Lets reserve judgement of any kind on this 17 year old kid, until you hear it from a more reliable source. Then by all means some of you may return to condemning the kid for all of eternity.

Nice straw man

Yes, saying this raises concern = condemning the kid for all eternity.  Are there no shades of gray in your world?

Who hasn't wanted to chuck a ball at a ref in their lives?

Almost everyone has wanted to, but almost no one has.  Far more likely he will do it again, and it will really cost, than he has it out of his system.

Yep

But it was a Hockey East ref, so odds are it was a bullshit call.

Either way, let's definitely jump to conclusions on this.  Why wait for the facts?

In Zeke's defense

Maybe Zeke got the safety on a pump fake, and the Umpire was open?

1st Team Defense

The 1st team defense looked impressive yesterday during the scrimmage.  The 2nd team needs a lot of work.  Over the course of the coaches clinic the last three days, I thought the defense was in a little trouble, but they did not let the 1st offense score.  Martin looked great and Carvin Johnson was extremely impressive.

I can't imagine a kid like this blatantly throwing a ball at an umpire.

If thats the case i would

If thats the case i would assume it was more of a frustrated toss after the play than Pike chucking the ball at a ref. Either way its not good, but theres a huge difference.

In my experience with refs

they can be REALLY full of themselves (coughJimJoycecough), so this may be nothing. It may be that Pike tossed the ball to the ref after a good or bad play, and it had a dash of pepper on it, and the ref decided he wanted to feel important.

I feel for Jim Joyce man, he knows he fucked up. He cried right after he knew he made a mistake, and was man enough to admit it immediately afterwards. I wouldn't use him as an example of a ref that is full of himself. Hightower on the other hand....

joyce

is a horrible example.  he made a bad call and owned up to it.  that's why he is consistently rated one of the best umpires out there.

angel hernandez, though, is another story.  bad ump and has a short fuse.

...you'd have to be pretty full of yourself to even consider making the call that he made.

You're assuming that (with its low trajectory) it wouldn't have hit the hands of any defenders in the area.

(I'm sorry, too, JN.  You seemed like a good guy.)

As someone who has been

As someone who has been ejected from a HS sporting event everyone should cool it until more information comes out. We shouldn't condem or excuse this act until more info comes out. We've all been pissed at a ref before and we can sympathise with the feeling but that doesn't mean the rumor is true. Also, as someone who likes athletes with fire and passion I don't know if I'd like this story to be true or to not be.

BTW, my ejection was total shit. I was in a water polo match and had just been substituted since I'd played 80% of that game (roation just like basketball) and I needed a breather before the final 4 minutes. I played basically the equivalent of a basketball center on defense and a PG on offense (like soccer in that the whole team shuffles up and down without shifting spots). I told my sub to watch for a specific move the opponent makes and sure enough the first time down he makes the moves and scored. I yelled something like "Bull Shit, Come on Matt" and jumped off the bench. I was the only one on the back bench, for some reason all the players who don't play sit on the first bench making the starters and rotation guys climb to the back, and when I jumped the bench flipped. The official on the far side of the pool automatically assumed I kicked the heavy wooden bench which would destroy my foot even though she saw nothing because she was giving the scorer's numbers to the scoring table where both my parents were working (and were looking at her as the bench flipped). I got tossed and we lost the game by 1 goal (and my substiute was burned time and time again thoughout the final 4 minutes). At first my coach thought I did it (I have a competitive temper) but fortunantly for me one of the players that I hated on my team actually turned around after the goal and saw I didn't touch the bench and my coach believed him.

The worst part was after the game the official wouldn't let me get a single word in and told me I was going to be banned for 3 more games. When my coach tried to talk to her she banned him for the next 3 games as well even though he is an incredibly nice guy who has never raised his voice or sworn at anyone ever. However, later we turned in a tape from the game recorded from the stands and it's clear I didn't touch the bench. The official was suspended for the rest of the year (becuase she turned in a 3 match ban for me and my coach instead of just hearing us out) but we still lost the match which cost us the final state playoff spot. Still not over it 5 years later. Damn officials!
