OT: Yzerman believed to be on short list for GM job in Tampa

Pretty much says Dave Nonis is the front runner, but if Yzerman is truly interested that he'd be the front runner. Holland is suppose to be getting a contract extension also. It'll be hard to see him leave, but he's earned it.
many believe Yzerman wont go South to become a GM, and will be back in Detroit next year, but beyond that who knows
have no problem with Yzerman going to TB, or really anywhere else to GM. I think that when Holland retires, Yzerman will be the first person we call, regardless of where he is or what he is doing and I think there is a better than even chance he says yes. Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see any reason why he has to be the GM in waiting here until Holland retires. Holland is a great GM, let Yzerman learn from him, that's been done. I think it's better for him to get the opportunity to get experience being the GM somewhere else, than to just sit around Detroit waiting. And I truly believe that wherever he is, whatever he is doing, if Detroit were to offer him the GM gig, he would take it, to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if he modeled his contracts to be available whenever Holland's contracts expire, just to be ready.
That being said, I don't think he's going to leave quite yet.
Good luck to him, but he'll be right back once Holland retires...

Its bound to happen. You can't keep the best minds in hockey together forever. I just hope that like many people here feel, he'll be back as soon as Ken Holland is gone.
I'd like to believe Mr. Ilitch will have something to say about this. Please oh please.

Come on, this is ridiculous. Yzerman is going to wait for the right opportunity. Thanks to the gold medal, he will be a frontrunner for an GM position that opens up. Why would he want anthing to do with the train wreck that is Tampa Bay? Aren't they on their 3rd set of owners in the past three years? This is the organization that hired Barry Melrose after 15 years out of the league. This is the organization that hired RIch Tocchet after his 2-year probation was up for running an illegal gambling ring... and then promoted him to head coach after they fired Melrose. Yzerman isn't going anywhere near Tampa Bay.

is nice (for him), but I don't think it really means all that much to a him being a GM somewhere. I think he'll be a great GM and I agree that it won't be in Tampa or anytime particularly soon, but assembling a team where your only restriction is that they have to be Canadian is far easier than assembling a team dealing with salary cap, player relations, getting free agents to come to your city, egos, draft choices and whatever other considerations they have to deal with. I probably could have assumbled a gold-medal winning Canadian olympic team, it's not like they're lacking for talent...
Considering this was only Canada's 2nd gold in the past 50 or so years, I think assemblying a gold-medal winning Canadian team is a bit tougher than you may think.
Still, your point is valid... being the GM of an NHL team is more challenging than being a GM of a national team.
