OT - Youth Football documentary

Submitted by GoWings2008 on

In the spirit of MOAR content, and in case you all are in need of it as much as I am...

Esquire TV is doing a documentary on 5 youth football teams in San Antonio, Texas.  It should certainly raise some eyebrows.  My question is...how long before we're really recruiting Texas very aggressively???

Boom Goes the …

just got done with my first year coaching youth football.  Even on a military base (with lots of gung ho, type-A personality dads) I never heard anything that that.  Granted, I only had 5 and 6 year olds, but wow.

My 9-year old plays lacrosse down here in the heart of Texas.  Last season before the first game, the coach for the other team gathered his kids up and gave this bizarre military inspired speech to 8 and 9 year olds in which he yelled:

"What do I want you to play with today?"  all the kids yell back "Pride and Intensity!" he responds "That's right, pride and intensity.  Just like April 2002, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan: Our Marines were pinned down and outnumbered 3 to 1 by the Taliban... but they didn't surrender... they fought back and forced the Taliban to retreat, and when they had them on the run, they didn't give up... they chased them down and slaughtered them.  And that's exactly what I want you to do here today, play with PRIDE and INTENSITY!"

...and then they proceeded to destroy my sons team (none of our kids had ever played before) something like 25 - 0.  Just a different mentality down here.

I've never seen the show but I've coached youth football for 5 years.. I don't need to watch because I already know people are assholes, take it waaaaaay too seriously and parents ruin it for everyone.
