OT: Your Top 5 TV Dramas of all-time

Submitted by BeatOSU52 on

There was a sub-discussion in the Mad Men series final for this the other week and it got me thinking.  Mine would be:

5.  Boardwalk Empire - probably not on a lot of people's top 5.  I think Michael Pitt's potrayal as Jimmy Darmody is one of more underrated tv performances of all time.

4.  The Sopranos  - Credited as the show that got presitige tv drama series really going.  People still talk/debate about the finale to this day.   Also great acting as a whole.  RIP James Gandolfini.

3.  Breaking Bad  - Has as some of the best use of cinematography I've ever seen.   Gustavo Fring is probably my favorite villain of all-time in a series.

2.  Mad Men  - Don Draper is probably my favorite drama character of all time in terms of level of intrique.  Hamm better finally win an Emmy this year!  This show is more character--driven than most shows which causes some to stay away from it and either love it or hate it.  I thought the series finale was great and stayed true to the show being an accurate illistration of human behavior.

1.  The Wire  - It seems there's not a lot of middle ground in regards to this show in that people think it's the most overrated show ever, or that it's the greatest show ever.  I obviously fall in the latter.  I think it's as close to a flawless show as you can get, and I believe it has the overall best acting on a show that we'll ever see.

So I like AMC and HBO shows as you can see, and probably favor shows in recent time.  But all just my opinion.

Watching it now, don't really care for it.

Like, what the hell am I supposed to be invested in?

The screw up brother? The Jimmy Buffet fat brother? The cop? Am I supposed to have empathy for the cheating whore from Freaks and Geeks? Is that who I am rooting for?  Call me crazy but I like to actually care about a character in a story that's all.

I invested in Danny because I tent to root for the "bad guy" in TV shows (Walter White, Dexter Morgan, etc)

IMO you don't need to pick a single character to enjoy Bloodline.  In this show, they reveal what happens in the first episode and it's interesting to me how they finally got to that point.  Yes, the first few episodes may be a little slow but it really picks up and is quite entertaining over the last 5 episodes.

liked Bloodline from the get go. It gets really good shortly after where you are. Danny is not what he seems, or more than he seems, depending on how you look at it. Keep watching, acting is superb and it gets really intense. When you are done, go down the Netflix dial a little bit and watch Rectify. It is a Sundance show. Really good. It is like The Shawshank Redemption was remade by Terrance Malick.

Bartlett: "I thought you said, 'Michigan sucks.'"

McGarry: "No sir," Leo answers. "We're standing close to the engines so it may have sounded like I said, 'Notre Dame is going to get the ass-kicking they so richly deserve.'"

For that quote alone I shall forever love the character of Leo and that show.

Just started The Wire last week. Im enjoying it so far. The Shield is my all time favorite, but there's a lot of shows I still haven't seen yet.

Your list damn close to what I would pick, particularly with The Wire in the top spot.  The Shield was excellent and I greatly enjoyed Sons of Anarchy as well as those previously mentioned.

Man, this is a hard list to make, as there are many knocking on the door to be in my top 5.  I guess this is my top 5, but # 4 and 5 are pretty much interchangeable with about 5+ other shows that aren't listed here:

1. Doctor Who

2. Luther

3. Sherlock

4. Game of Thrones

5. Lost

This wouldn't necessarily be an all-time thing for me yet as it is only two seasons young, but if it continues with the same quality and ability to entertain as it has so far, "Broadchurch" would have a good argument. I've been catching up with it, and it is definitely one of the best out there at the moment.

There's also an American version of Broadchurch with Tennant reprising his role but all the other actors different.  I tried watching it, but couldn't really get into it after watching the British version.  I also would vote for Sherlock, but there are so few episodes it's hard to include.  Another BBC America show, Orphan Black is also really well done.
