OT Your Christmas Eve tradition

Submitted by jabberwock on

Growing up i heard a lot of bunk about leaving milk & cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

In the jabberwock household we were informed in no uncertain terms that Santa actually preferred beer and cheese & crackers.

You might be imagining a nice aged cheese paired with a select craft brew, but in reality is was usually a plate of velveta-topped saltines and a can of Strohs.

The reindeer didn't get shit.

Any other families do anything non-traditional as a Santa offering?

I know of 1 family friend from a particularly anal retentive home that left out a bowl of soapy water and a washcloth so Santa wouldn't soil their expensive white furniture & carpet.

That's fucked up.

We open one present early, which is always a board/card game we can all play, and my dad and my brother and I open a bottle of Macallan 12. We're Finnish, and big on wood stoves so we chop wood in the early evening before the games begin. Currently sipping scotch and playing this year's game "Superfight" mom found at Target.

A few years ago we stayed home for the first time instead of making the 4+ hour trek back to Grandma's in Michigan. As something to do with the kids on the 24th we all piled into the minivan and drove around looking at Christmas lights. Everyone got to vote on their favorite. When we picked the overall favorite we left a gift bag full of treats and a gift card on their porch, rang the bell, and took off. Our note inside explained that we liked their decorations and wanted to thank them with the present. We are about to do that again this year and it is a good time

We went to a Chinese restaurant tonight for dinner. We got Peking duck. No head, just lots of succulent duck meat. We also got a lobster and ~8 other dishes. (There were 11 of us.) My mother-in-law went after the lobster's brain like it was her last meal for days. Another table ordered two massive Alaskan king crabs. The waiter brought them to the table for approval before cooking. These things were at least 4 feet across from tip to tip. Another table got a whole split pig. Good times.

usually go to my aunt's house but the last few years I haven't been able to make it because of weather or illness. continuing that tradition this year hunkering down in the snowstorm wrapping presents, eating mac and cheese, and drinking beer and bourbon.

24 hours of A Christmas Story. Once the kids go to bed, we bring out the one Santa present. Only one of the three kids still believes, but the other two play along. Merry Christmas, everyone!

We spent it with my dads side of the family. Our evening always consisted of dinner, playing euchre/hearts, presents and church in some order. Nowadays we make cookies for Santa with our three year old and there’s brisket in the smoker for lunch tomorrow.

Bake snickerdoodles with the kids and set them out with dark rum spiked egg nog. Kids get to open one present on Christmas eve. Instrumental Christmas music on the surround sound while baking and eating dinner. Christmas movies after. Get it on with Mrs. Claus after the kids pass out.

This is my first Christmas being single. My kids are with their mom tonight and tomorrow. Actually pretty depressing so I’m going to drink my self into a stupor for the next two days.
