OT: Yo Quiero Olympics!
I don't know if people are taking the "no spoiler" advice to the extreme or not, but I'm surprised there has been no Olympics thread started yet today.
I was impressed by the your US archery team and glad that the Korean swimmer's disqualification was overturned. What Olympic sports have you been watching and what has interested you so far?
Michael Phelps barely making it to the final was interesting. I learned that team handball is a sport, and the biggest thing I wondered is how those cyclists could ride for 6 hours at 30 mph and not kill themselves in the process.
i read that the US has never medaled in handball, badminton, or ping pong
Just had a very nice swimming relay.
saw the cheap shot Abby Wambach took this AM. Pretty bad
Lady Andrade isn't living up to her name. She should be done for the Olympics: suspended for their next and final game, as France, which rebounded from their loss to the US with a 5-0 drubbing of N Korea, should eliminate the winless Columbia.
She's also got some chutzpah:
Andrade called the play an accident."Nothing happened," she said through an interpreter. "It was just a normal part of the game. We were both running, she ran across me and we collided. I had my hands in the air. It was an accident."
Told that Wambach wants Andrade disciplined by the governing bodies, the Colombian said: "I think they should be, too, because they're the United States. The whistle always goes in their favor. They were hitting us and hitting us, but there was never a whistle."
Yeah, right. The 5'11" Wambach getting accidentally slapped in the face by a shorter player running normally would stretch the bounds of credulity; getting hit hard enough to have a black eye is completely unbelievable.
I was ambivalent with NBC on the opening ceremony,But the fact that i couldnt watch the 400 IM and Lochte crush Phelps who got 4th is ridiculous. Show it twice, id probably watch it both times especially on a saturday. You can still get the prime time view then.
l was royally confused how twitter and espn were blowing up with the Phelps result, and yet I wasn't watching it. This tape-delay NBC stuff is crap.
'watched' it via streaming.
more sucking by NBC; I'm now glad they are stuck with ND broadcasts.
I am having these same issues too. Try having it as your only website open though and it seems to help out a little bit.
There's a memory leak in NBC's web player that will cause it to crash a lot of browsers. One browser page in 30 minutes is using 3 GB of RAM
They really do need to do a better job of changing their programming on the fly as events unfold, even if they originally planned to hold off until later to show certain events.
Six Michigan athletes were in action today. Without spoiling anything that will be on the prime time broadcast on NBC:
Krista Phillips (Women's Basketball - Canada): scored 4 points with 3 rebounds and fouled out in only 10 minutes of playing time in Canada's 53-58 loss to Russia.
Syque Caesar (Gymnastics - Bangladesh): got respectable (top 30ish) scores in the floor exercise and parallel bars, but did not qualify for any event finals.
Sam Mikulak (Gymnastics): Will be shown tonight on NBC
Tom Peszek (Rowing): Peszek and Stafford finished last in their heat of the men's pairs; will have another chance to advance to the semifinals on Monday.
Michael Phelps (Swimming): Qualified 8th for the final of the 400 IM, which will be shown tonight on NBC.
Peter Vanderkaay (Swimming): Qualified 2nd for the final of the 400 freestyle, which will also be shown tonight on NBC.
Looks like Lochte is the man. I'm honestly not really shocked. If even half the stories about Phelp's party streak in AA are true, the guy clearly isn't as focused on as his training as he was in the past. Time to pass the torch.
Yea thats probably it and not his age
When Lochte wins 13 more gold medals, assuming that Phelps doesn't win any, then he will have "caught up" to Phelps. There are a lot of events left.
I just wish it wasn't a question of "Lochte vs Phelps." They and their respective fans need to be exposed to a Michigan football mantra: THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM.
I'm happy every time anyone representing the USA wins a medal: especially a gold.
Fortunately, the other athletes in any given event often have something to say about the outcome.
at all because it's so grueling and he had taken a couple of years off training. Then as the games got closer he decided to go for it.
Related to the above, stumbled on this article in the Albany Democrat-Herald with follow-up to Tyler Clary calling Phelps' practice ethic into question.
Phelps is getting older too.
He is a year younger than Lochte, though.
He's actually two months older. Anyways, that's not the point.
Some athletes peak at different parts of their lives. It's obvious Phelps developed early evidenced by him swimming in the 2004 games and is in the tail end of his career where Lochte seems to be in his prime.
This is false. Phelps turned 27 last month and Lochte will turn 28 in six days. The age difference is minimal making the second part of your post accurate.
nbc on some BS
the 400 im finals happened already
lochte won the gold, phelps finished 4th
wtf they can't show this live
F NBC
I think that Michelle Jenneke has been my favorite part of the olympics so far, though.
She didn't actually make the olympics this year, but she's only 19. Lots of time to watch her train for 2016.
She must be wearing a lot of makeup in that race...
.
not Marilyn Monroe.
Why do I find muscles on women so sexy and not so much on guys?
Oh, I'm male. Oh, I came of age in the 1980s.
She's friends with Mike Martin too...
My wife made a comment during the opening ceremony about the athletes seeming more attractive today than when we were young. I did point out to her that, yes, camera operators tend to seek out the better looking targets, plus the whole pumping female athletes with steroids and testosterone approach to medals is frowned upon nowadays.
Remember the Miller Lite ad with "Helga" Piscopo, ex-East German swimmer?
"...so to keep de girlish figure." LOL
Just watched the US-Korea match in women's volleyball, one of many sports I only watch during the Olympics. It wound up being a very good match. It doesn't seem to matter what sport it is, there is no quit in Korean athletes--they fight till the very end.
I have a friend who starts on the Mens Water Polo team. They took a silver in 08 and should get a medal this time too. The competition is very tough though. They play Montenegro tomorrow.
I think to be that good at a sport you have to have at least a little bit of douchebag in you. You have to think you are the best thing ever.
What are you saying about #16?
Guess it's not women's gymnastics time yet, if either gender can grow facial hair
