OT: Yankees vs. Angels

I only watch a little baseball if my favorite team isnt in the playoffs. But I don't think I have ever seen 2 worse calls back to back than what just happened. Those blown calls were a joke.

Yeah, that's just awful on the Swisher call. They just showed the replay that showed that the umpire that made the call wasn't even looking in the same direction and could not possibly have seen whether Swisher left early. That's just unbelievable.

I've been waiting for the implementation of replay review in Baseball for years. It seems so simple, yet to steal a quote from a great column on ESPN Page 2 today: "...This legislation, along with the use of instant replay for officials, shows how football is unusually willing to let technology dictate performance. The problem with replay is this...you use it for one thing, then something happens and they say hey we should use it for this. Before you know it people are demanding instant replay for everything. I like it how it is. Use it for home runs and such. And everyone is complaining about baseball, but basketball basically only uses it for plays at the buzzer. As for the series...Go Yankees! I cant stand the west coast and am an A Rod sympathizer for all the haters. Even after this post season people will continue to find reasons to hate and be jealous of the man.

see why MLB can't go to a replay system. I believe that balls and strikes shouldn't be reviewable, but make fair/foul, close plays at bases, diving catches all reviewable. It can be the same as the NFL with 2 challenges from teams and the umps can look at plays anytime. Has to be indisputable visual evidence yada yada yada.

The umpires are quickly becoming the story of the postseason. I think there's gonna be a strong push for replay now. It's not like it will effect the speed of the game at all.

McClelland was blocked out of the play by Posada over running the bag. That's an honest mistake. You can see him try to look around in the replay. I can't fault him for not calling an out he couldn't see. That said, someone on the crew screwed up that Damon play pretty badly, whether it was McClelland not having the angle to see the play, or the home plate umpire, who would make that call in a 2-man crew.

I think replay in football is alright, but really, does baseball need it? Football is a game of inches and having to have both (or one in NCAA) feet in bounds with 22 guys running all over the field at the same time. In baseball it should not be that difficult for the umpires to get calls right, period. They have to follow one ball. It really doesn't matter what is going on with the players on the field (except base runners touching the bag), they simply have to follow one ball and there is enough of them on the field that they SHOULD be able to do it. If they go to replay in Baseball, they should simply get rid of the umpires entirely (other than the home plate umpire to only call balls and strikes) and use the video replay to call the game. Most baseball calls are cut and dry; you know when a ball is fair or foul 99% of the time. You know when it is a homerun 99% of the time. You know when a player has caught a pop fly 99% of the time. You would probably need the replay once per game (if that).
