OT: XBox360 Update Brings ESPN3, UM Games to Console Dashboard

Just as a heads up for those cable impaired, or needing different avenues to watch non-mirrored games, the new XBox 360 update brings ESPN3 to the Dashboard. Anyone with a Live account is thus able to stream ESPN3 content to their XBox and, subsequently, their tv. The immediate impact on the Michigan community includes:

  • NCAA Football games every day this
  • Michigan volleyball against PSU at 7 pm Friday
  • Michigan versus Illinois - noon Saturday
  • Northwestern vs. PSU - 3:30 Saturday
  • Other national football games
  • Should you be a masochist, replays of the UM/PSU game, as well as Iowa and MSU
  • Should you be a fan of glory days, UM vs. UConn, Indiana and Bowling Green are available as well 

Obviously there's wide variety of games in other sports but for those of you like myself going without cable this is a welcome use to the dusty XBox.

I believe the ESPN3 access is still restricted to those whose service providers have the appropriate partnership.

That said, I checked it out last night, and it's pretty decent.  In the event that my DVR gets too full, I can save some space by counting on ESPN3/Xbox to rewatch games, which will be nice.

Considering that I'm going to be paying for an Xbox Live membership anyway, I'm happy to see so many of these value-add features joining the service.  They continue to try to distinguish themselves from other consoles (or even to give you a reason to want a console at all, if you consider OnLive a viable competitor) and I'm not complaining.

The about-damn-time inclusion of Netflix searching is another of the welcome changes to come in the dashboard update.  I haven't done anything since the update that involves voice communication, but I'm looking forward to seeing (hearing) if that purported improvement is noticeable.

I was on the Microsoft beta program for both the new xblive dashboard as well as the kinect. While the new features on the dashboard are cool, the kinect is the true star of the show. It's revolutionary. And the cool thing is that as a thank you to me from the msft beta team, they've let me keep the kinect!

I like the changes and with the recent announcement that they will be streaming Sportscenter hopefully I can trim my cable bill a little bit as I already torrent 3/4 of the shows I watch anyways.

I've been using it for a month now and it is awesome. Being able to bounce through games using the score ticker is by far the best way to watch all the games. It's not HD, but it is not bad quality. Also, you can watch Aussie Rules Football, which is teh awesomes!

I was pretty pumped when I did the update. First thing I did was go to the ESPN box and download it. I love that you can stream the games over ESPN3 on my Xbox 360. I usually just streamed them from my computer to my TV, but now its a better picture. Im pumped! I had to stream the Michigan v msu game since they pulled a switcheroo on me. Now, the games I want to see (well really, the games I bet on), I can just watch from the Xbox instead of having 2 or 3 streaming on my computer. If they stream sportscenter, that will be icing on the cake! Now, if they could only get hockey back.
