I wonder if they thought they'd just go crazy in the finale to get fan support to the point where Fox has no choice but to order new episodes.  it's gonna suck if that cliffhanger is left there. Without the "Where's William?" lines I could see it just ended on an open note, but those lines really suggest that we sgould expect more episodes.

Why in the world would Mulder just so happen to have a "track my phone" app on his desktop? it was like, oh no we have no idea how to get this new agent on the track of where he's going.  That really bugged me.

I have to say, the stand alone episodes were way better than the two part mythology episodes. I would really like to see Morgan and Wong back on the series if they do decide to continue next year.

One thing Snowden made clear is that if you dont want Those People tracking your every move, then you can't carry a smart phone around. I get that Mulder's had a mobile phone going back to the 1980s (origins episode of the Lone Gunmen), but it still bothers me.

The Darin Morgan episode with the were-man was fantastic. Two of the three standalones were good. The Islamic terrorist episode was, um, unconventional, although I kinda suspect it was written so the achy-break heart scene could go viral on YouTube. The mythology episodes continued their downward slide. The fact that most modern "prestige" TV shows impose a timeline presents obvious benefits when I watch Carter continue to this drag out.

Duchovny felt like he wasn't taking any of it seriously - maybe he's just lost the character. The whole show lacked energy, and made me not care. Disappointing, and too many contrivances. Sorry to be a downer.

Had such high hopes. Should have been one last ng arch. I had no idea why or where Skinner would show up.

Made no sense.

Also what a fucking gip on seeing the lone gunman. A shroom trip?

Whole thing was very poorly thought out and executed.

I thought the six episodes as a whole were fantastic, thoughtful, and original. Lizard werehuman was awesome. Making the rich businessman and libertarian radio/internet talk show host a good guy was deft and novel to the point of being unique. The Islamic terror episode was nuanced and all kinds of fun. The true theme of the miniseries - parents and children, just like the original series and this one - was extremely well done.

All that said, cliffhanger endings are irritating, and this episode as a whole was the worst of the six. Sigh.

I was impressed that they stayed within the existing mythology, even though it is well known by the fans, or at least, better understood by the fans than by the characters. Interesting dramatic tension there. I thought they'd probably introduce some new stuff, but basically they just played to what they had done already. Good move there, I think.

They stayed within the mythology, but they tweaked it enough to make it fresh. Making Scully more of the believer than Mulder was an interesting twist.  The dopelgangers were interesting too (Agents Miller and Einstein).  For what it's worth, Scully's doctoral thesis was about Einstein's Twin Paradox.  I didn't see enough out of them to allow for a spinoff though which is a rumor right now.

especially Six Feet Under girl.  She comes off as super cunty.

I'm also not sure that I like the new story arc, mainly because it calls the previous 9 seasons into question.  And now I'm supposed to believe that the Smoking Man is the protector of the earth?

I'll keep watching if they make more though.  Even mediocre Xfiles > most TV.

About calling the previous 9 seasons into question - I can see that the miniseries did that for Mulder to some extent, but from the viewer's perspective, I think everything aligns and follows. That's what I meant by the interesting dramatic tension between what the characters believe and what the viewer knows.

Smoking Man isn't the protector of Earth, but he does see himself as the protector of the chosen few in the struggle to survive Colonization.

That had to have been the calmest end of the world mob I've ever seen. The guy with the mask starts breaking windows and all it takes is for Scully to shout "stop" for the madness to end. Also, in what kind of apocalyptic traffic jam do cars move out of the way when someone behind them honks? That doesn't even work in non life threatening rush hour traffic. That being said, I did otherwise enjoy the series, just had to suspend belief somewhat.

I assumed that space ship smoked Scully and Mulder like it did that girl in the first episode.  If so, there was a certain grim satisfaction to the ending.
