OT: WVU Debacle Legitimate (?), Coach Linked to Leaks

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on

While starting off as rumblings on Twitter and highlighted in this thread, the stories that Bill Stewart's wife, or the coach himself, may have been leaking abusive stories regarding coach-in-waiting Dana Holgorsen appear to be true.

West Virginia University is conducting an internal inquiry to locate an anonymous source responsible for making allegations against football coach-in-waiting Dana Holgorsen, the Charleston Daily Mail reported Monday...

Holgorsen, 39, was hired by West Virginia in December from Oklahoma State with the intention he would replace Stewart in 2012.

But according to the Daily Mail, a university source said the contracts have been left unsigned while the athletic department looks for those responsible for leaking what the university says are false stories about Holgorsen.

What the goal of these stories could be (make Dana look so bad they have to stick with Stewart while looking around again?) is unclear. The comments revolve around the series of news bits that hit nationally making Holgorsen's removal from a casino appear to be just one of many incidences. This is not the case, though, at least according to West Virginia officials

The university examined the latest allegations from the Herald-Dispatch column, particularly an alleged incident in 2008 during Holgorsen's coaching stint at Houston, but found nothing to support those claims as well.

That the Dispatch ran the story without a cursory review/fact-check would substantiate the notion that the source was trustworthy or legitimate enough to take at face value. But now the Smoking Musket appears to have busted the story wide open:

Multiple high-ranking sources with knowledge of the situation have informed The Smoking Musket that Bill Stewart allegedly served as one source of the contentious Herald-Dispatch report of Dana Holgorsen's purported alcohol-related incidents.

While shocking, this isn't all that improbable: Stewart has Marshall connections after coaching for the Thundering Herd under Sonny Randle in 1980

And Stewart, it seems, has established a pattern of being less than forthcoming recently in his leadership role as Mountaineer football coach.  Beyond the Holgorsen allegations, Stewart has also reportedly failed to sign the final version of the renegotiated contract agreed upon during the original coaching transition.

In all, the debacle is making the RR disappearance all the more a) understandable (what a bunch of head cases) and b) a seemingly rational parting of ways. Stewart has no contract so his ouster could actually be easier all while he was attempting to, apparently, gain leverage. And in the end, this may be true:

and there is nothing worse than the zelous hypocrite….

if this is true, Bill Stewart will replace Rich as the mosted hated man in the state. 5 years from now, Charlie will post a poll on whether we still hate him, and his numbers will look worse than rods.

P.S. Thank you Lloyd for, well, you know, not doing this.

Actually, if he doesn't have a contract, wouldn't that mean he's operating under his old contract and thus still has some kind of high buyout? Or at least higher than now? Him not signing the new contract could probably be an issue for WVU.

I think what they mean by not having a contract is that the term of the original contract expired and so they are now operating under a month-to-month or year-to-year arrangement.  Most of the provisions in the "existing" contract control but things like a buyout clause, etc. would no longer be operative.  That's my take, anyway.

I think Rich is the hot girlfriend who left for the wealthy guy, and got dumped. They talk a lot of trash about him leaving. But when the moment is right, they'll forgive him if he comes back. Ironically, the fact that we dumped him and it didn't work out, will make the healing that much easier.

Out of Morgantown that says Bill Stewart threw the game against NC State so that he could deliberately create a coaching controversy and torpedo Holgorsen's position.

I think this is appropriate here:

Courtesy of EDSBS front page (for now). If Halgo the Destroyer finds out who betrayed him, the Ol' Whittler better watch his arse.

I know most will think this is pure lunacy, but in the back of the minds of the WVU admin they seriously have to wonder if Rich would come back.  There would be a lot of other things to hash out, but with Stewart going and Holgorson seemingly having issues already would this not be a viable option.  He was ultra successful by their standards and he could essentially throw Stewart under the bus as the reason he wanted out.  One major thing to hash out is would Casteel stay after what was apparently some strife between Rich and him.

RichRod riding to the rescue in Morgantown on a mule accompanied by a pack of baying coonhounds? I dunno. Seems as if that bridge has been nuked (from their end). I'll keep believing he ends up at Clemson.

Classy Bill Stewart.

By the way OP I love Lloyd and all but he probably was at least partially involved in trashing RR and was definitely involved in Les Miles not getting the Michigan job. I certainly haven't heard Carr come to the defense of RR.
