OT: World Juniors Gold Medal Game - USA vs. Sweden (Live)

Submitted by goblueram on

Just underway from Russia, USA vs. Sweden in the IIHF World Junior Championships.  Russia defeated Canada 6-5 in overtime earlier to take the bronze.  Sweden is looking to defend their gold medal from last year.

Of course, team USA features Michigan's Jacob Trouba (and 3 other Michiganders).

Beat Sweden!

USA! USA! USA!

------

UPDATE1 - After a  scoreless first, Sweden scores early in the second on the PP to take the lead.  Sweden 1-0.

UPDATE 2 - USA ties it on a strange goal from Rocco Grimaldi, who walked out from behind the net and squeaked it by Sweden's tender.   1-1 midway through the second.

UPDATE 3 - Trouba's shot from the point tipped in by Grimaldi, 2-1 USA!!

Empty net goal and that's the game!

USA wins the gold medal with a 3-1 win!!!!

Did you see the SBNation article about the Canadians reaction on Twitter to USA's shalacking of Canada?  Obviously they picked the most obnoxious ones but I thought Canadians were nicer than that! Although considering the only thing people in Vancouver have ever rioted about are Stanley Cup losses hockey is obviously different...

Canadian tears are Cherry-flavoured.

I'm cool with it if that means Jason Botterill, Mike Comrie, and Milan Gajic can still come to Michigan while we can keep Jack Campbell and John Gibson here, as well.

The USA has won this tournament twice in the last four years.  Canada hasn't won it once.  It's killing them, and it's killing them even more since most people in the US (unfortunately) don't even know that this event even exists.

But I know...and I'm damn proud of our developmental program and the kids who come through it.
