OT: World Cup help for the Non-soccer fan

Submitted by Feat of Clay on
Born-again soccer fan makes the World Cup field more accessible for Americans, via comparison to other sports teams.

This was immensely helpful in my decision to root for Boise State! Er, I mean, Cameroon.

Eh, that's such a great article idea that had so much potential.

The guy ruined it by using almost exclusively NBA, NFL, and NCAA Basketball teams.

Seriously, comparing a team to the Cornell Basketball team?  Couldn't you find anyone better in the MLB or NHL to compare them to?

As much fun as poking fun at ND is, take away our 1997 title and we are a perfect fit for Uruguay as well, minus the catholism.  Great article though, lots of fun to read.

His analysis of Portugal gave me a chuckle.  To wit:  "They prance and preen, but they’ve never won a damn thing, which is problematic since they are HORRIBLE losers."

Watch out for Ghana. They were strong in '06 and the key parts from their U-20 squad that won the U-20 WC are on the senior squad now. They can make a ton of noise. As for the Dutch, I love watching them play since they are the only UEFA squad that will run and gun with anyone and have offensive skill only matched by Brazil, Argentina and Spain.

There are some pretty good analogies there.  I LOL'd at the Uruguay and North Korea ones.  There are a couple reaches (Denmark and Paraguay come to mind) but on the whole, pretty good.
