OT: World Cup Final Open Thread

No real dog in this race, but I'll probably root for the underdog Dutch. There also seems to be a stronger contingent of Dutch fans on here, so be better fun here if you all are happy.

VIVA ESPANA!!! I hope the Spaniards win. I've always liked their style of play and they have some great colors. Talk about a story too, from losing their first match to the Swiss all the way to World Cup Finals.

I like the Dutch too don't get me wrong. It's win-win for me whoever wins. You can't ask for two better deserving teams in the Finals...

Found this interesting article as well gives you a little insite into the history of these 2 countries....basically Hollands national anthem is all about war with spain....pretty interesting.

"And when the Spaniard harms thee
My homeland, sweet and good
The thought of it alarms me
And my noble heart spills blood.
"

Go Dutch!

Cheering for the dutch, but expecting another 1-0 spanish victory ... spain just controls the ball so well, they don't let the other team get the chances to socre ... im going out on a limb and saying i see xavi getting the goal but i have nothng to justify that prediction

all and all, should be a great final, both of these teams have been a joy to watch

Kuyt just got owned right there.  I think Sergio Ramos pushing up is going to give Kuyt more defensive duties than usual.  But the opportunity for the counter is there.

...hear this?  These horns have been used at RFK for years, but in relatively small numbers.  The supporters clubs (Barra Brava, Screaming Eagles, El Norte) do NOT use them.  In my experience, most of them are played by kids whose parents buy them as souvenirs.  They're a minor annoyance at DCU games because it's like dozens of them throughout the stadium, not thousands.

im cheering for the dutch but that was straight ugly ...

cleat to the chest, miles from the ball

the dutch are really lucky their not playing 10 on 11 right now, that would be game over, they would never touch the ball then

I like the running clock in soccer, but they really need a better way of figuring out the amount of time lost to stoppages than going by the refs' best guess. I bet if someone actually timed all the stoppages in a typical half, it'd end up being like 5-7 minutes.

It comes down to the ref, he is supposed to punish time wasting with cards or warnings although they constantly fail.  It's part of what drives fans completely mad during a game.  Watching your team try to come back on the road when the other team is getting out a towel to dry the ball at every throw in (Stoke) can put one into a fit of rage.

Watching the seconds tick away feels like death.

I wouldn't want them to actually stop the clock because that opens the door for TV timeouts. All they need is a "stoppage referee" whose sole job is to take note when play stops and keep track on a separate clock. The regular referee has too much to pay attention to as it is.

This has always been a frustration of mine since childhood.  They are calling it much shorter in this World Cup compared to the usual club season / international breaks as well.

That said that was a pretty bad half, only made exciting by a couple moments of violence. Howard Webb usually loves being the center of attention, so I'm sure he loved it.

Thankfully the club season is back in a month and exciting soccer will recommence.
