Alright, so I'm thrilled that Women's Hockey is catching on. Back when I first played at various levels, female hockey was a wreck and the best girls would come over and play on the lower level male club teams. So I'm glad to see the sport emerging and offering a future where female hockey players will have a who system they can play in, from a young age up to Olympic level.
However, the Olympic level hockey needs get some class. Teams have won 18-0 in the Olympics and up to 82-0 (yes eighty-two, as in more than a point a minute) in qualifiers. When I played hockey we were taught to start taking low percentage shots or clang our shots off the posts once we had a 5-7 point lead or so. Also we pulled the forwards out and did less to screen the goalie / pick up rebounds. I remember playing smaller / more casual clubs and becoming rather inaccurate as the game went on. First period my shots went between the pipes, second and third period I bounced a lot off the boards. The American and Canadian teams though just go for the kill for the 60 minutes. What ever happened to being classy and easing up a bit after you jumped out to a 7-0 lead? Clearly you still play the game and show respect for the other team, but you can stop teeing up some shots and trying to kill people in the neutral zone.
Maybe I'm a grumpy old man, at the ripe age of 25, but I really want to throw these womens team into the shark tank against the NHL All-Stars and watch them get demolished, so maybe they can learn what it feels like. I'm happy that America and Canada have dominate programs, but they really need to learn to win with class. Anyone else annoyed by this or am I merely a lonely, bitter, women hater?
So anyways rant off. I'll just go back to watching Canada vs the Fins and rooting for Finland. Negbomb as needed.
