OT: The Wire

I've been thinking about buying the first season of "The Wire", but I want to make sure the show is as good as it sounds.

So, are there any other fans on here of the show? I just want to know what's really good/bad about it and why it's worth watching.

So, you're saying the "if not the best" clause is your opinion, and by "not being on the same planet" as Sopranos, you are indicating that, in your opinion, "Sopranos" is better? Is this some sort of variation of "A is not even in the same league as B" argument, but amplified to say that A ("The Wire") cannot be in the same league as B ("The Sopranos") because "The Wire" is so inferior it does not occupy the same theoretical planet? I thought they both were on earth.

All kidding aside, respectfully, "The Wire" never wasted an episode. Or a scene. Or a character (where is Furio? WTF happened to that storyline?). "The Sopranos" can't say the same. Nor were the characters nearly as compelling, nuanced, or dynamic as an ensemble as they were on "The Wire."

Count me as one who loves both shows, but feels "The Wire" is a better show. And never dumbed anything down for the audience, which "The Sopranos" seemingly did.

Can't agree more with the general sentiment here. The Wire, to me, is the greatest achievement in filmed entertainment ever. It's like the best movie you've ever seen, only 60 hours long, and rather than it wearing thin for being so long, the length just makes it even better.

(pauses while "that's what she said" rain down from 100s of MGoUsers)

Now then. I also totally agree that you should just invest in the whole series, not just season 1. Totally worth it.

BTW, I teach college and am teaching a freshman seminar this fall using the Wire as the basis for the class. I can't wait.

Then don't bother leaving the store without the next four. It's that good. Endless detail between the vast character storylines, and this extends season by season as well. If you're going to start watching, you better go "All in" because you'll understand/appreciate it more that way.

Great show, but don't let it color your opinion of Baltimore.  I am a Bmore native and while that life exists in certain parts of the city, it is mostly concentrated on the West side of the city.  The city overall is a great, safe place with tons to do.  I love the place, to be honest and have never been mugged, attacked, or felt unsafe... in most of the city.

I love how nothing is superfluous in that show. Every character is integral, every story line contributes to the whole. The writing is so rich and the story arcs are so profound.

I started watching the series from the beginning about a month ago.  I probably watched the first three seasons in two weeks.  I'm starting season 4 this weekend.  I think the characters truely make the show--just very well written and accurate to life (at least from my perspective in the legal field).

Bottom line: best tv drama ever.
