As if the D crew isn't

As if the D crew isn't vulnerable enough, it sounds like Colaiacovo is going to be out for a while.  Signed Huskins to a one year deal today, though, so we will see how he looks.

I liked having some separation of Pavel and Z last night (though they did connect on a goal).  When they are on the same line, it seems like the other lines are unable to create anything for themselves.  Still waiting for Franzen to get it going, which will be huge in determinining how the year goes.

Go Wings Go!

Huge pet peeve of mine

The A does not stand for assistant captain, it's alternate. How do so many announcers get that wrong?

My guess would be...

their mindset is totally locker room leadership. The qualities that mean C's and A's on sweaters can mean that, but at least for levels lower than the NHL the captain positions can be based on other things (usually knowledge of the rules/referee speak). It doesn't help that, unlike football and basketball, captains in hockey have a unique in-game role, which confuses them further (and also confuses me when other sports put C's on a uniform, what's the point?).

Long story short: they're usually lazy, just like all announcers. Except Darren Pang; he's not technically an announcer, though.

PK Subban

With all these defensive injuries, one has to wonder if Ken Holland has called Montreal about restricted free agent PK Subban...

Cap Space

With roughly $6.77 million left in cap space after the Lashoff call up and Huskins signing, I think you can affored him.  Plus where else would the Wings spend their money.  Subban is obviously the best defensema available.

They would have to give up

They would have to give up multiple draft picks I believe as compensation for signing a RFA.

Believe Correct

I'm not exactly sure on the break down of exactly what draft pick compensation would entail.  I'm sure it is somewhere in the new CBA but I'm not about to try and find it.  But rumor is Subban want 5 years $4million per.  Which doesn't seem unreasonable for the wings to spend on a top pair defenseman.

They won't do it

This is the kind of signing that could set the franchise back by at least five years. Subban has potential to be one of the league's best, but he can also go out there on any given night and play like a complete bonehead.

Even if he did pan out, Detroit isn't loaded with talent like they used to be. The draft picks they would have to give up are too valuable right now.

I don't know about it

I don't know about it necessarily setting the Wings back. Not sure who we would be giving up obviously, but Subban is young and that helps to explain some of his bone-headed nights. If he were in the Wings organization he probably would have been playing in Grand Rapids the last couple years; you can't really blame him for some of his play the last couple years as he was forced into the NHL because of the lack of talent in Montreal. We wouldn't be losing too many years in acquiring Subban for draft pick(s), he's only 23.

Amount of young talent

The amount of young talent there seems to be in the farm system and in drafted players it doesn't seem like it would really set the Wings back... For instance you have Mrazek, Tatar, Sheahan, Ferraro and Jurco all in Grand Rapids.  You also have Xavier Ouellet and Martin Frk in the QMJHL. Ryan Sproul seems to be having a very good year in the OHL and should be AHL ready by next season also.

I missed the game.

And I was hoping someone would comment as to whether it looks like he's got anything left in the tank.  He's been my favorite NHL player since his rookie year.  I know he played back home in Kladno during the lockout, so he should be in some degree of condition.  NHL is obviously a higher level of play, though.

Dallas played

well on defense, made things easy for Lehtinen and then when the tough shots came late Lehtinen stopped them.  Howard was awesome, kept them in the game.

tip your cap and move on.

It is games like this that

It is games like this that make me wonder why Ken Holland has puzzlingly stayed out of the market for the high end UFAs the past few years.  After last year's dismal finish, it was obvious that the team needed some upgrades.  So Holland went after -- Jordan Tootoo and Kyle Quincey?  What the fuck was he thinking?  Injuries don't help, but the guys who are injured right now aren't difference makers.  We are currently sitting on a whopping $8 Million of cap room, and the team has big time talent holes.  Shitty, irresponsible defensive play, especially the terrible penalty killing, has been a problem for about four years now.  Even the last time that they reached the Cup Finals, their penalty killing was absolutely terrible and they got by because of their insane level of offensive talent.

A lot of this is also the pigeons inevitably coming home to roost after 20 years of drafting late in the order and trading away draft picks.  You can only get lucky in the late rounds so many times, and you can only ride guys drafted more than 10 years ago for so long.  The scary thing is -- it can take a long time to rebuild, and there is no guarantee that it will happen.  Ownership and management will inevitably change.  We have been incredibly lucky with Holland and Ilitch.  The next owner could be like the Fords, or that asshole who used to own the Blackhawks.

The big question

If Hakan Andersson sticks around for a rebuild the Wings should be fine, but how much longer does he stay around for? He's been with Detroit since 1990 and is considered one of the greatest scouts the NHL has ever seen.

They went after

Ryan Suter, he chose Minnesota.  There weren't many top line free-agent defensemen worth their price last year.
