Side question:
Do Zetterberg and Datsyuk get their jerseys hung in the rafters?
Or do they have to do more in their careers to get to that point?
If they stay with the Wings til they're about 40 and the Wings aren't awful in that time, I would think they'd be pretty certain to get their jerseys in the rafters. But Dats might go back to Russia after next season so we'll see. I think based on what they've done so far and what they should finish with in terms of #s, 13 and 40 will be hanging one day.
Datsyuk and Zetterberg are very good players, but they're not in the same league as either Yzerman (the greatest team leader in NHL history, plus elite stats) or Lidstrom (pretty clearly the number two all-time defenseman). Those guys were legends years before they hung up their skates, and I just don't see it with 40 and 13, as much as I enjoy watching them play.
I think about this often...
Crazy to think both guys could be in the rafters but I think they both will if they both finish their careers with the Wings. The've won a cup as the leaders of the team and have stepped up big time in the playoffs.
and I agree that should be important, but if the last sentence is the criteria, why not Shanahan or Fedorov or even Osgood?
Not to knock on Zetterberg and Datsyuk, but in a list of Sawchuck, Delvecchio, Lindsay/Able/Howe, Yzerman and presumably Lidstrom, I just don't think they end up retiring either number.
