OT: Windows 10 problems?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Last week I finally got the long-awaited Windows 10 upgrade, and I immediately had some problems that I have been wondering if anyone else has experienced.

First off, I have since switched back to Windows 7 after three days of trying to fix the problems on my own.

I have the Windows 10 upgrade on a laptop, and the first thing I noticed upon upgrading was that my touchpad and clickers were disabled completely.

I went into the settings and enabled the touchpad, but the clickers still wouldn't work. On top of that, every time I shut off and turned on my computer, the touchpad was again disabled by the OS.

Another major problem was the inability to stream video on browsers other than Chrome. As we know, Chrome and streaming video is.......uh, not good to say the least. I use IE to stream BTN2GO, ESPN3 and WWE Network video and it worked perfectly on my Windows 7's IE.

Well, not on 10. I got nothing but a blank, green screen with sound playing every single I time I tried streaming a video. Tried Firefox, and the same thing happened. Streaming video is one of the most important features on a computer for me personally.

Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems since the upgrade. Share if you have experienced any or anything like I have.

I get that it just literally came out and I'm making quite the leap, going from 7 and bypassing Windows 8 and 8.1 to Windows 10. That user interface, while fast, is so confusing and makes life difficult just to find the control panel!

I made the jump from win7 to 10 also. Only issue I've run into is that my pc no longer detects my second monitor for some reason. I've been messing around with various drivers (have an AMD 7800 card) and havent gotten it to work yet. Other than that everything is working at least as well as it was on windows 7.

I upgraded a Dell workstation with Win 7 64 Pro to Win 10 about two weeks ago.  Other than changing the default printer, I had no other issues and there are a bunch of devices attached to the particular PC.  It took a bit longer to do the conversion than I thought it would, about and hour and three quarters, but the PC is configured as a RAID and that might have added to the install time.

This is anecdotal, but it seems like my applications are running a bit faster than before the upgrade which might be a consequence of installing the OS and cleaning out garbage from several years of Win 7.

I like the new GUI....didn't take long to feel comfy with it.

FWIW, I skipped Win 8.....beta'd the OS and thought it sucked.  8.1 was better, but I think Microsoft will be on sound footing with 10.

Knocking on wood, but so far so good.

I had a problem with the background process "Runtime Broker" hogging CPU constantly. Long story short, I did a "Windows Reset," which reinstalled Windows while keeping all of my files. It ended up working. I later figured out that it was due to a few of the default apps on the start menu not being able to download their information from Microsoft's server for whatever reason, which made some sort of infinite loop run in the background.

I like it so far.  I upgraded my brand new ASUS notebook with no issues, well the only issues were that the tasks I had setup in Windows 8.1 didn't get ported over to Windows 10 so I had to reset them up. And the programs I have installed on a microsdcard (which i have a task to mount as a vhdx drive) didn't get thier icons in the start menu.  I doubt I'll uninstall them to re-install them simply for thier icons since they work fine but it is an annoyance.

I'm probably going to upgrade my windows 7 desktop this weekend and my ancient windows 7 laptop (2006 era dell inspiron, currently used as a print server and file server for my wife's pictures) will probably get upgraded this weekend as well.

Enable software rendering in Internet settings. Videos will play perfectly after that. Go to control panel and mouse settings. Click the right-most tab, which will be the settings for your proprietary mouse. Go to advanced settings and enable gestures, tap to click, and so on. Best yet, do a clean install of Windows 10 instead of an update if you can. You will lose your data, but the computer will run much, much better.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you might have just had some driver issues with Windows 10.  Chances are that if you were running Windows 7 you might have had old hardware or a gunky registry that could have caused a number of these problems.  I've updated 4 PCs ranging from a DIY desktop, a new-ish laptop with a touch screen, a 7-year-old laptop, and basically a netbook without any major issues.

Personally, I like Windows 10.  Apparently that's the minority around here, though.

My computer keeps telling me to switch every time I log on, but I'm going to wait. I don't really see the need. If I did switch now I'd definitely do it on one of my virtual machines with all my other systems, sandboxed from my original os. Don't really know why more people don't use vms. I have plenty of memory and never worry about breaking my computer.

My kid's expensive notebook went into a continuous restart cycle. I had to get into safe mode and delete several drivers. Unbricked it. Only the government has lower quality standards than Microsoft.

when i first upgraded my laptop from 8.1 to 10, i wasnt all that happy with the performance.  but then i did a fresh install of windows 10 and now it works beautifully.

also in regard to chrome - i used to love it.  when it first came out it was so fast.  now its just a resource hog.. ive been using edge on 10 lately.
