OT: Windows 10 problems?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Last week I finally got the long-awaited Windows 10 upgrade, and I immediately had some problems that I have been wondering if anyone else has experienced.

First off, I have since switched back to Windows 7 after three days of trying to fix the problems on my own.

I have the Windows 10 upgrade on a laptop, and the first thing I noticed upon upgrading was that my touchpad and clickers were disabled completely.

I went into the settings and enabled the touchpad, but the clickers still wouldn't work. On top of that, every time I shut off and turned on my computer, the touchpad was again disabled by the OS.

Another major problem was the inability to stream video on browsers other than Chrome. As we know, Chrome and streaming video is.......uh, not good to say the least. I use IE to stream BTN2GO, ESPN3 and WWE Network video and it worked perfectly on my Windows 7's IE.

Well, not on 10. I got nothing but a blank, green screen with sound playing every single I time I tried streaming a video. Tried Firefox, and the same thing happened. Streaming video is one of the most important features on a computer for me personally.

Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems since the upgrade. Share if you have experienced any or anything like I have.

I get that it just literally came out and I'm making quite the leap, going from 7 and bypassing Windows 8 and 8.1 to Windows 10. That user interface, while fast, is so confusing and makes life difficult just to find the control panel!

I've had my desktop for about 5 years.  Paid like 750 for it.

Not once have I had to take it in for repairs.  Only thing I've done is spend 150 for a better video card.  5+ years later and can still run the newest games that come out.

And my anti-virus is free.

But you keep on assuming that all PCs have to go in for repairs, though, and keep on overpaying for a mediocre machine.

Except that they're not anymore. The OS may be superior (only because both MS and Apple do everything they can to squash Linux), but my family all own Macs outside of me. I still run a 2006 laptop without issues on Win7, never had a HDD failure or any other issues. My brother and sister have both fought multiple hardware issues including 3 crashed HDDs, 2 logic boards, and my sister's recently overheated so badly that it WARPED the keyboard and will not close. All I ever hear from my Mac family and friends is how happy they are they bought Apple Care Protection Plans. Funny, that.

I admire Apple for the many innovations they've brought (or at least perfected), and they were once amazing, but now they're just overpriced. But at least you don't have viruses written for MacOS that often.

Not really a beauty when you have to pay double the price for a mediocre machine that still does sometimes break.

Again, bought my desktop five years ago and a lot of its guts are still better than what Mac is putting out. Hasnt broke, nothing. And I will continue to love paying less for a far superior machine.

That is almost comically untrue, but keep believing that.  I've seen lines of people standing around the repair desk in Grand Central with a variety of busted Apple products, including laptops.

Apple makes fine products, but they have convinced a generation of people that they've cracked the code for device development when they simply haven't.  But I'm sure you can't hear me behind those sweet Beats headphones they've been tricking people into thinking are actually any good.

I can't bring myself to switch fully to Linux. I have one machine running it, but my main pc I use for gaming and I don't want to lose all of the games I have right now. Any suggestions? I would love to make the switch and never look back, but gaming is what holds me back each time.

To be fair, my parents' old Performa booted up and ran great (comparatively, still slow as shit) the last time I tried it and that's 20 years old. Although, that was when Apple made all of their own hardware including processors.

lol....more like a subscription. I have a friend that is a Mac fanboy that had to send a MacBook in for repairs twice in the first few months that he owned it and he was crowing about how they got it back to him in 4 days each time, which to me typifies mac lover attitudes. There is a reason they have several trillion dollars in cash, they not only absolutely screw people by overcharging them up front, but also by trapping them into their software/services and overcharging them there also. Also, some of the anti-competitive shenanigans they have pulled make Microsoft's transgressions back in the day seem like nothing in comparison.

haha what a joke...

i had a macbook pro and a recalled part died (and it died exactly how their recall website said it would), and the apple "geniuses" wouldnt replace the recalled part for free.  instead they said it would cost me 500 bucks to replace this part.  the recall website even had a date as to when you had to return the product by, and i beat that date by 6 months.  the best part is, that when i asked the "genius" why i should ever buy one of their shit products again, he told me because they are like a mercedes and microsoft products are like fords. i told him if had a mercedes and it was recalled, im damn sure that shit would be fixed for free.

after speaking with the manager with still no luck, i walked to the microsoft store and used my 500 bucks i just saved on a new windows 8 touchscreen laptop and havent looked back since.

I upgraded and have had none of the problems you have mentioned.  (Sorry if that doesn't help!).

One thing I don't know if I can change is that when you slide the right menu in (on a Surface), instead of a brightness slider, like in Win8.1, there's a brightness button that changes in increments of 25% each time it is touched. I actually like this - it's quick - except the increments don't include 0%.  That means I have to actually  open settings to bring the brightness down to 0% if I don't have me keyboard connected.  Anyone know if that's changable?

Thank goodness I didn't upgrade. I got a pop-up offer on my windows 7 professional machine the other day to upgrade to 10 for free. Sounded like a good offer, but something told me not to do it - especially knowing how poorly Windows has done with their previous OS upgrades. Thanks for the heads up!

This has been one of the best upgrade rollouts I can remember.  If you don't want to upgrade don't do it, but fearing the past with Windows (and let's be honest, there's a fair bit of revisionist history regarding these upgrade horror stories) won't help you here.

RGard is a monkey!!!  I did have to educate them on the differences between Chimps and monkeys.  When that didn't work, they learned that Chimps are more accurate than monkeys when it comes to pooh flinging.

Yes, we are all about class and groups.  Notice I refuse to capitalize 'monkeys'.

Surprise! As usual, you contribute nothing to the actual thread's topic and just swing by to knock me.

Not being able to stream video when I need to stream video multiple times a week is not an option.

Also, I can switch back to Windows 10 at any time if I want to. I keep getting notifications about it on the taskbar.

Unfortunately he's not alone WD.  There seem's to be a fairly robust group of downvoters who like to knock you for some reason.

Apparently being a hyper-fan for Michigan on a blog founded by a guy who was such a hyper-fan for Michigan himself he found a way to monetize it by leveraging the repeated visits of other like minded Michigan hyper-fans is somehow unacceptable to certain people.

Well, there is an argument to be made for the necessity of WD to post this thread.  A google search most definitely would have been more productive.  Nobody has addressed his problem.  Several posters (predictably) chime in with their personal computer preference, which isn't relative to the post.

I didn't care in this case, since I'd also just updated.  But there is the question of why WD feels the need to create this thread, given he creates, you know, a couple thread here and there.

Actually they kinda did address his problem, perhaps without knowing they did.  The issue (as several people have pointed out) according to our IT department head is the drivers.  Many of tthem are either  incompatable or havent been updated corrected so they arent functioning as they should/will shortly.   Which is not unusual  for a new operating system.

In defense of WD if I didnt have an IT department I could ask I'd probably have done the same thing.  Google directs you to user forums which, IMO can be completely worthless if you're not a super-techno geek.  At least here people speak in terms novices like me can understand and you can have an active dialoge on the issue and not have to wait three days for a response.

My first attempt to upgrade from 7 to 10 went great until I shut down my computer for the night and tried to log in the next day.  I was stuck on the lock screen with no way to get to the sign-in screen.  I thought it was my keyboard/mouse, but that wasn't the problem.  Tried doing all the system restore/repair options that came with the ISO image of W10, but it didn't work and I only managed to make things worse.  I happened to have a spare SSD lying around (long story), so I did a clean install of W10 on it.  I was expecting to have to then pay for the clean install of W10 since it was on a new SSD and wasn't an upgrade from a 7, but since I managed to successfully upgrade once, the new SSD didn't affect my prior activation.  That was a nice surprise.  The only issue now is having to reinstall all my programs.  Oh, for some reason, Chrome is REALLY slow on W10.  Dunno why.

Sounds very much like driver problems.  It's a pain, but you should be able to get updated drivers.  In fact, it's quite possible that you're using drivers that are out of date even on Windows 7, and can update them before upgrading to Window 10.  In particular, the streaming problem is almost certainly due to the video driver.

I'm on vacation this week, but will be back at work next Monday.  If you want to give it another try then, if you run in to problems I can walk you through sending me the logs and I can troubleshoot for you; I've been a programmer and program manager at Microsoft for 19 years, so I'm accustomed to being unpaid technical support for family and friends.  Also, we're intensely interested in upgrade problems, so I can easily grab help from other engineers if need be.

Send me mail at andrewgrAToutlook.com if you decide to go that route.

I'm hoping to sponge off your gracious offer to help WD.  I got my first BSOD in W10 yesterday with the error code of "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT."  I did a memtest and it isn't my RAM sticks, and Windows memory scan came back clean.  Based on my research on the interwebs, it is likely a fautly driver somewhere.  I have average computer knowledge.  Is there an easy way to find out which driver is causing the problem?

You can cover like 90% of the cases by updating your video, audio, and USB drivers.

By far the biggest culprit are video drivers.  If it were me, I'd make sure that's up to date and see if that fixes it before bothering with the others.  You might also google your video card and Windows 10, it may be that others have the same problem and the manufacturer hasn't yet fixed the driver.

In terms of diagnosing which driver it is, yes that can be done, but I don't have a Windows machine with me on vacation and don't remember off the top of my head where to look.  But it's probably a good idea to make sure you have the latest drivers I mentioned anyway.  At least try the video driver.
