OT: Win Stanley Cup, Chant "Detroit Sucks"?

Submitted by Rico616 on

OK hockey season is officially done and I'm just about all hocky'd out but Jeff Rigor of 97.1 The Ticket pointed this out, the Blackhawks fans chant "Detroit Sucks!" while celebrating their team's victory.

So after waiting 49 years to win a cup, all they can do is chant Detroit sucks? Because you know 19 straight playoff appearances, 11 stanley cups ( 4 in an 11 year span) makes them suck.

As a die hard Wings fan, i really don't care that much that they are saying "Detroit Sucks!"  All we have to do as Wings fans is say 11 vs 4.

And to be honest i was rooting for the Hawks, only because i feel it is only proper to root for any Original Six team.

I started to do it, but then I compared it to how everybody felt about the Red Sox before they won the World Series.  Now everybody hates Red Sox fans almost as much as they hate Yankee fans.  So now everybody will realize how annoying the Blackhawks fans are.

BTW... too bad they didn't get through the Red Wings on their way to the cup.  If the Wings didn't make it through Colorado in '97 it would've felt like something was missing.

15. Buddy's (Detroit)

I read that article when it came out and was very impressed by the author's approach and jealous of his pizza quest.

I've lived in Chicago for five years, eat out on a regular basis and am always looking for good new places.  Can't believe I haven't even heard of Great Lake Pizza (google mapped it - it's waaay north of the city).  I'm going to have to swing over there on my way back from the Green Mill next time I'm up that way.

Thanks for the tip. (BTW, I'm with you - deep dish isn't pizza)

When a city wins a championship, and all the fans can think about is Detroit. Thats when you know there is a inferiority complex.

Nope.  I don't think Wings fans have an inferiority complex at all.  I don't think they should, what with being one of, if not the, most successful program in the NHL.  However, the fact that each and every thread on here about the Blackhawks gets loaded down with "Chicago only has bandwagon fans," "Fuck that city," and my personal favorite "One and done" (kind of like most teams?), it says a lot about how unconcerned Wings fans are with the Hawks right now.

Those fans did the same thing at the Culver Classic outdoor hockey game between Michigan and Wisconsin. As I walked the game from the hotel to Camp Randall wearing the maize Michigan hockey sweater I didn't get any MIchigan sucks but I was berated with Red Wings sucks and Chelios sucks the entire time. I find the Chelios one hilarious since he is a Wisconsin alum. I guess Hawks fans are still butt hurt about Cheli winning a couple cups with the wings.

Chicago is the king of bandwagon fans. Where were all these fans before the previous owner kicked the bucket? You could hear a pin drop in the United Center. At least Chicago is in major cap trouble. The hawks will be dismantling their team like the Marlins do everytime they make the world series.

Right, because the Red Wings were selling out all the time in the Dead Wings era.

Seriously, when you guys sucked ass, no one showed up.  When the Hawks sucked ass, no one showed up.  You're no better -- the only difference is the Wings have been good for 20 solid years.  The Hawks drew regular sellouts in the 90s.  And then they cheaped out and got rid of Roenick, Belfour, Chelios, etc.* in order to save money.  And then they went into the shitter.  And eventually, the fans said "fark you, if you don't care, we're not coming".

There are plenty of bandwagon jumpers (as there are for any newly contending team), but there's plenty who were around before and started paying attention again right after Dollar Bill died and his son immediately decided it was time to get home games on TV -- we knew right then that things were turning for the better and it was time to support again.

*They got rid of Hasek too but they already had Belfour when that happened

Living in Wrigleville, working in Loop... and putting up with these fans equals killing self.

Honestly, it's the Chodes from the Chicago suburbs with the attitude... everyone born and raised in the City has been really cool and appreciative of the Cup.  'Burbs people (aka 20 year old Ashton wanna-bes and slicked back-hair black shirt wearing asshats have been completely obnoxious) the last two days.

Just an opinion from a Wings fan buried deep in "Hawks band-wagon territory"

I work in the loop and while it was cool to see the Cup heading up Washington from my office window, I did feel compelled to let out one good "boo!" to combat all the crazy bandwagon folks in the area.  And it felt good.  And like the right thing to do.

when they should be thanking us, considering they didn't win the Cup until after Scotty Bowman signed on as a special consultant.

Regardless, I'm glad the Blackhawks one since I love Chicago and I've hated the Flyers since they came into the league.

It's actually quite an honor that they were thinking of us after they won the Cup because I guarantee you after we won we weren't thinking of them
