OT: Will Muschamp to Florida

Submitted by gater on

This hasn't been announced as official yet, so all the caveats still apply, but it looks like Will Muschamp (Texas DC/Coach in Waiting) will be Florida's next coach.

Seems like a great get, Texas recruiting ties at a Florida school.

Edit: Just saw this come across Twitter (yikes):

RT @j_wells247 Talk out there that Major Applewhite will come with Muschamp as OC.

Could you imagine him running around TX recruiting and instilling his extreme work ethic he has with UF players? UT could destroy CFB.

so it makes sense in some way but Mullen makes more sense. Gotta wonder if Georgia is second guessing holding on to Mark Richt seeing now what has happened with Muschamp (Muschamp played at Georgia for those who don't know).

This must have been in the works for some time. Wonder what this means for Texas (both coordinators suddenly gone). Is it possible that Mack Brown is retiring and Muschamp was told he was not getting the job?

WOW!  So not Mullen, Petersen, or Rodriguez???  HOW can this be?  EVERYONE had SO much inside information.

Must have been rumors  :)

Let's take this as a lesson for our own situation, and concentrate on celebrating after Denard was named an All American and we just watched Carl Hagelin play the violin as we rolled Michigan State!!!

I would imagine this is going to effect Florida's and Texas's recruiting class. Really depends on what type of offense he wants to run at Florida. Switch to a pro style and we could start seeing transfers flying out of Florida.

So... Muschamp goes from Texas to Florida.  If he is going to be the HC at Texas eventually, why go to an equal program in Florida?  It's easier to get Texas to a BCS game than it is Florida, and they are two of the country's top programs.

My only guess is that he got the feeling that Mack Brown was going to stick around for more than a few years, and didn't feel like waiting another 5+ years behind him.  Good for him, I guess.

isn't that strong this year, and typically perennially.  I think that this is a great move.  UF is really a cornerstone program in the SEC for the last 20 yrs plus.  Lets face facts, Muschamp knows whats going on inside UT, thus him moving to UF seems as if he feels like this is where he can have more success.  I am really curious to see what he can do as a NC.

He has some creativity as a DC and mixed a lot of blitzing packages that I think mirror the NFL.

His hire might also be sexy enough to stir more recruits.  He has caches.

was for recruiting and not for an interview. I mean, if they were between Bo Pelini and Muschamp, why would Magee even be considered (he was denied at USF, and even if he was the best candidate, what would the PR be in Florida if UF hired a guy rejected at USF).

No offense Magee, I love ya!

Just wondering, with Mack Brown and Texas needing to replace and OC, a DC, and a few other position coaches, does Mack just call it a career? Why go through all the hassle.

On one hand, you might take one of the OC/DC jobs at Texas and hope that when ol Mack retires in a few years you slide into his position. Of course, Texas will probably want a head coach with experience, so you go to Texas for a few years and then are relocating when the new guy comes in with his staff.

Or, maybe this clears room for Applewhite to move to OC/Coach in waiting. Which of course means that when Mack retires, they'll hire Chris Simms instead.

21 days until Michigan beats Mississippi State.

There's an analogous situation in our own history... most everybody connected to the OSU program back in the late 60s would have tabbed a guy named Schembechler as the logical heir to Woody Hayes, and Hayes himself told Bo not to take the Michigan job because he would retire soon, allowing Bo to take over in Columbus. Bo didn't believe him, and the rest is history.

I know the recruits will flow in regardless for Texas and Flordia, but maybe this hire will keep these two schools down for a couple season. Mitch mite not be a good fit in Flordia on the offense side of the ball, and maybe Texas' defense will follow there offense into the ground w/o a great DC!

I think trading the Texas job in two years for any other head coaching job is insane. If he doesn't have some personal reason for leaving Austin, he needs to have his head examined. Texas is easily, IMO, the best job out there. The school wants to win, has fantastic resources, a great base, a great town, and great tradition.

The rumors that Dee Hart might lean to Florida if RR is not retained I think just took a hit (if they were ever true).

anyone else?  Isn't that against the rules for trying to get minority coaches?  I think that rule is annoying because even if the white guy is your best choice, you still have to interview the minority, which is not too nice to the minority.
