OT: Why No Brady Hoke Coaching Rumors?

Submitted by Eastern Wolverine on

I realize this may be stupid, but I'll lead with my chin and ask: With so many college head coaching positions available, why is Brady Hoke's name not brought up at all?  Has there been anything mentioned about him in recent weeks, or even months in the media? I risk missing something obvious but am concerned I'm not and my worst fears on the subject have been realized.

If they do lose Babers, but I would almost like to see him go back to Ball State of that ever reopens again... Something about guys at their Alma Maters just makes sense to me.

Because he's not a good coach. At least not a good P5 coach anyway.

I could see him finding some success by going back to a place like Ball State, but he'll be hard pressed to ever find a P5 job that isn't among the likes of Colorado, Purdue or Kansas.

Brady Hoke is not a good Head football coach. Clock mgmt..turrible. Player development...turrible (including the positions he allegedly specializes in). Motivating his own players...turrible. Attention to detail...hot gahbage. Poise...shitty at best. Knowledge of the game...below average for a man of his ilk. Good recruiter. He gets a D+

Brady stated he wanted Power 5. Probably a stretch given his last couple years at Michigan and the fact that it was considered quite a leap up for him when he was hired.

I think Brady is a good coach, players like him, good recruiter, manages the program well and good representative. Maybe not the most polished and articulate, but genuine.

I also think that he was unique in regards to having to deal with a meddling AD who had too much influence on the team. I also would think Hoke would have learned some things the hard way at Mich that he won't repeat again( importance of quarterbacks, coordinators, etc)

In the business world we would probably say, go somewhere and prove to me you can get it done before we hire you for a big job again.

I see him at a lower power 5 or MWC/American type school, or a stint in the pros.
I think he deserves another shot and would be a nice choice for the right situation.

I was a little surprised he was not in running for Iowa State.

I think eventually Hoke will get another opportunity in the MAC or MWC where his level of coaching fits the overall skill/talent in those conferences. Honestly, it's probably where he should've ended up anyways.

No need to disparage Coach Hoke. What can be said is this....ALL talented and successful people have one thing in common...OPTIONS. Hoke not having options tells how people view him as a Coach.

...is unfortunately tainted goods. Plus, his post-game press conferences don't inspire much faith in his overall abilities, IMHO.

If he does coach again someday, I think it will be at a D2 school.

but his only "A" grade is in recruiting. He's likeable. Beyond that he has to account for the absolute shit-show that occurred here his final two years. From fielding 10 men on a weekly basis to bad hires to an almost absolute lack of player progression, he has to account. That may keep him from even a solid MAC job.

I see Hoke getting a lower level P5 job. Maybe at like a Rutgers. Look at Rich Rod. He has no problem getting a job at Arizona after failing at Michigan.

1) Long...very mediocre at best coaching career.

2) Failed misrably at Michigan.

3) Perception that he does not protect his players health (see Shane Morris as the best example, the ND game last year for others etc).  This is a HUGE deal for a school to deal with due to liability.  Brady also had an incident at Ball State where he was disciplined for possibly damaging a players health.

Edit:  Im not saying Hoke is a bad guy or did anything intentionally to injure his players or put them in danger.  Obviously the man never had such an intention....however his stupidity in not taking those guys out who were taking a beating (Morris, Funchess broken foot in garbage time vs. ND, Gardner taking cheap shots from ND with 1 min left and down 38-0)....

Aware but not Fully Aware: its not a perception that a coach would ever want.

4) What kind of coach is Hoke?  He is not an x and os guy.  He claps but is not a motivator or one who pushes the players to give their best.   He is considered to be a soft marshmellow.

5) He is a decent recruiter and at best is qualified as an assistant coach at this point in his life.  He has never been a coordinator.

Brady Hoke's 1st season at UM:

Squeaked by ND at last second + OSU coached by Luke Fickel (and we still barely won) - Dantonio and #23 Spartans beating us (#12 ranked team) + stumbling victory over VT = Lucky Golden Horseshoe up Brady Hoke's ass.

We could have easily been 8-4 that season.

But, go ahead and make that comparison if you like.....it's stupid, but go right ahead.

I'm confident that Harbaugh's next few seasons will surpass those of Hoke's, and I hope that he will stay for a while. I just don't like how quickly everyone has forgotten about how great of a first season Hoke had (you can paint it however you'd like, but it was easily our best season since 03). And who's to say that the team wouldn't have improved over the long term under him. Harbaugh is certainly a more accomplished coach than Hoke, but I just don't like how quickly UM went through their last two coaches. Neither Rodriguez nor Hoke really had a fair shake to prove what they could do. And this negative thread piling on him is in poor taste.

I agree that Rodriguez didn't get enough time (4 years should be the minimum) but Hoke had that 4 years of time to coach and develop the incredible load of 4* and 5* players he was recruiting.....and yet, his teams got worse every year. There was absolutely no way he deserved year 5 and this year, with virtually the same team as last year, Harbaugh made some pretty big strides.

I'm sorry if people can't see that Harbaugh is a major upgrade over a career .500 MAC level coach. Hoke was in way over his head.

Brady Hoke managed to get worse each year at a top end P5 school like Michigan...even when he recruited at a fairly high level.  Outside of recruiting I cannot think of another aspect of coaching that Hoke performed well.  He didn't do a good job developing the talent, he created an atmosphere of entitlement which created a non-competitive environment and his in game coaching was horrible.  I don't know how many times he failed at things like clock management or in game adjustiments.  Hoke struggled mightedly against some of the bad teams, like Akron and UConn...teams he should have easily beaten.  Last season was a complete debacle and he was in his fourth year leading the program. With all the head coach opennings we would have heard Hoke's name mentioned If people outside of UM thought he was a good coach.  At this point he would be very fortunate for a MAC level school to hire him...and I don't even see this happening.

by making remarks about wanting to run another P5 program. He was actually delusional in his wording when speaking on this topic. Said things like, "I didn't suddenly forget how to coach, I would consider another P5 job, etc."  Guy doesn't realize he was chosen for one reason and one reason only. Brandon gave an undeserving coach a job perhaps because he landed a nice one and was equally undeserving. Brady was a lifetime =500 coach, even outrecruiting everyone else in his conference. He was the coach bright enough to say no to Jake Ryan who wanted to play for him at SDSU. Cat just is not a high caliber coach, although he may very well be a high caliber person. Think he could do well, with the right assistants, and my goodness they would have to be outstanding teachers of the game, at places like Memphis, Houston and others that fall outside the P5 but whose scores are shown on Saturday evenings. Hasnt proven worthy of anything better and until such time as he realizes no matte how great the recruiting, they won't play at a high level unless they are properly instructed on how to do such, he will remain a MAC level coach, at best. He is not a high level MAC coach, say NI, or one of the better programs.

When was the last time a p5 coach was fired from a big time team like Michigan, got hired at a non p5 school and did well? I don't think it's that common. Frank Solich is one of the few I can think of off hand. Most of the others had jobs as p5 coaches at lower profile schools before failing out or sticking (i.e. Charlie Weis, Mike leach, rich Rod, ty Willingham). He's a little to old to go the coordinator route like Kiffin or Muschamp, but that could be his best bet. Or an NFL line coach job.

Would like to see Hoke as an assistant coach at Michigan in the near future. Maybe in another year. Bring him back as a defensive line coach.

This is total speculation, but I wonder if he really wants to get back into coaching.

Buyout clauses stipulate that you must make an effort at getting a job in coaching or the media. By talking publicly about his plans (and taking that radio gig), Hoke may simply be satisfying that requirement.

Otherwise, there's no point in publicly saying that you want a Power 5 HC job, since your agent can just pursue them on your behalf quietly. Saying it needlessly sends a message to a lot of potential employers (Power 5 schools with DC openings, Group of 5 schools with HC openings) that you aren't interested. That is especially odd coming from someone as close to the vest as Hoke.
