OT: Why No Brady Hoke Coaching Rumors?

Submitted by Eastern Wolverine on

I realize this may be stupid, but I'll lead with my chin and ask: With so many college head coaching positions available, why is Brady Hoke's name not brought up at all?  Has there been anything mentioned about him in recent weeks, or even months in the media? I risk missing something obvious but am concerned I'm not and my worst fears on the subject have been realized.

Yeah, I think he'll get a call for a mid-tier job, but not for the top programs that are floating around.  But if he wants to coach this year, he'll have a good job to pick from.

1)  Brady I'm sure is trying to get one of the high profile jobs, frankly those high profile jobs should not be interested in him

2)  lower level jobs are on the back burner so to speak until many of the other dominoes fall in place

and 3) actually, he just isn't a good head coach.

Power 5 team will probably touch to be a head coach.  His options are to take a D line position at a power 5 or a MAC head coaching position.

He wasn't particularly in demand when Brandon hired him. There is some evidence that both Indiana and Minnesota sniffed around and decided not to pursue him. He's 5 years older now and I have to think that in addition to the age and mediocre overall record, how things went down at Michigan hasn't made him more attractive. I can't imagine that he interviews very well. I can see a job as a position coach for sure- maybe a co-ordinator but I think that's his ceiling. Of course it only takes one school to want him, so time will tell.

His win totals decreased each year as he brought more and more of this players into the program and more and more of RR's players exited the program, with his final year flaming out in epic fashion for everyone to see. That alone is reason enough to dissuade any power 5 AD from hiring him.

But the nail in Hoke's coffin may be the infamous Minnesota game. After seeing the Morris incident that got national coverage beyond the sports world and Hoke's response during and after, how could you honestly hire him if you are an AD?

To a MAC school or some other small conference and reprove he can turn a smaller program around to win a conference title. Then may be a power 5 team would be interested again? But time may be running out to restart.  Hoke can live off all the money he made from his Michigan gig and may coach at a small college just to give him something to do or go the coordinator route. I think he would make a good DL coach.

He's probably going to have to take a MAC level job.  No top level P5 team is going to touch him, and most lower level P5 teams are going to look to catch lightning in a bottle with someone with upside.

His best bet if he wants to coach again IMO is going back to a MAC/Mountain West level program where his Michigan experience will help him recruit.

of P5 seems to be that you find someone who has success at a lower level.  *SURELY* they can have even more success with more resources, bigger stage, get their big break, megasalary, etc, etc.

Hoke doesn't fit that because it would seem he had all the resources, etc, and didn't get it done.  Hiring him is conservative, but not going to be the pipe dream every school is looking for.  As above, i think he's going to have to reset, go back a level, and build his resume again.

Armed with the vision of hindsight, I really think Hoke died on the vine because of a couple key things:  the OL he needed to develop quickly took nearly their entire career to become functional.  He didn't recruit QBs with as much vigor he did with the other positions.  Maybe he trusted Gorgeous Al to do it, and while that guy seemed to be a genius in a cave, he didn't get out of that very much to help.  And, I think his assistants were not up to the quality of present-tense.

were a serious issue I don't believe were ever discussed. When you're considerably overweight (not trying to be mean, but clearly obese) by inspection you're not healthy. Add to that the stress of coaching a P5 football program and you run the risk of serious illness such as heart attacks, etc. which Michigan can relate to. It doesn't reflect well on the university you represent nor is it fair to be that out of shape/unhealthy when you're paid millions of dollars to coach a team. I'm sure Michigan would have paid a nutrition and fitness specialist to literally shadow him all day and help bring him to better health. I always wanted to ask about this when he was HC. Slam me for piling on, but your health is important to your success.

You are right.  A man of his age carrying all of that weight is very dangerous to most people.  It also sets a bad example for you team when you may try to tell them to work hard, while you go home and eat a donut and chill.

30 min on the tredmill a day along with a proper diet and some weight training would help not only the mans health...but also his perception among ADs looking for a coach.  A trim Brady Hoke is much more marketable.

Why would any power five school hire him? He has 3 good seasons in like ten seasons of coaching. And it's pretty obvious now that he really didn't recruit all that well outside of maybe a handful of guys. If he couldn't win at Michigan how is he gonna win at a school with less resources?

He recruited every single contributor (except transfer Jake Rudock and freshman Grant Perry) to the current 9-3 Michigan team which had a chance at winning the division until Saturday. His recruits constituted the entire 2-deep of the top 5 defense we put out this year. He was a good recruiter. A total failure as a coach, but he did recruiting (QBs questionable) right.

You can't follow that logic out one more step? Of course his players populate the two-deep. But it is not a matter of course that those players were a top 5 defense and a 9-3 team. They're good players. And yes, he failed to develop them, which is why he was fired and why he deserved to be. I'm just talking about recruiting.

Was he a good recuiter, or is Michigan just an easy place to recruit to?

He recuited worse than Carr and Rodriguez, and it sure looks like he'll be worse than Harbaugh.

Did he recruit better than historical average at either Ball St. or SDSU?

What evidence is there that he is actually a "good" recruiter?

after shitting the bed in epic fashion at Michigan, so Hoke should be able to as well if he so desires.

He could probably coach DL in the NFL.  He's a damn good DL coach.

he probably doesn't want to go back to the MAC, so he'll sniff the occasional defensive lineman coach position until he gives up on coaching completely. Maybe one will be a match, maybe not. He sure doesn't need to work again.

Not sure how big his ego is but that can be easily spun with "I was planning to take a few years off -and I don't need the money - but coaching is in my veins and just wanted to get back to my roots (in the MAC) doing what I love.

When he gets a job I am very curious to see what he does with staff hires.

I'm happy for how Rich Rodriguez is doing with Arizona (save for 2015) and I hope to be pleased with Brady Hoke wherever his next stop happens to be.  There's no point in holding a grudge or wishing them anything but the best.

I would have to think that if the current openings were the sort of openings for which Hoke would be considered now, you would probably see his name being floated for a few. It seems like it is - on a summary level - almost that simple. That being said, it's early on in a lot of these searches and who knows really....particularly at mid-majors, which is where I could see him if he took another job. As others have said though, he's a serviceable defensive line coach and that probably opens the door a little wider in terms of options. I guess a lot would depend on Hoke himself, should offers come along.

Methinks that unless Brandon is doing the hiring, Hoke will not be under consideration for a major position.  And you can probably put Borges and Funk in that category as well, though they are coaching. Hoke will coach again also, but it will probably be small program where his personality will go for a lot.

B: Brady will not get a big job.

C: There are no Hoke rumors

Because he wasn't a successful coach. Below .500 mac coach, 1 game above 0.500 mountain west coach, and not a successful UM coach outside of 1 magical Denard year (despite having more talent and resources than 80% of his competition). Remember, he would have never SNIFFED the UM job had the administration not been 100% convinced they needed a Michigan Man to replace RR. He could make 500k a year as a mid level mac coach I guess, but to what end? I guess he could find more recruits couches to fall asleep on.
