OT: Why I came to MgoBlog
I thought I would take a couple minutes to explain why I started posting on MgoBlog. Mostly, it was to just see how Michigan fans were reacting to the upcoming game with Bama. My other reason, was to follow recruiting from another view point. I'm a huge recruiting nerd, so I find those things interesting. My Dad went to grad school at Michigan, and he always wanted me to go at some point. I didn't, choosing instead to save my Dad a considerable amount of money, and going to UofA. I've always respected Michigan's program, and you guys have done nothing to refute that thought. And while I don't get into the hockey/softball/and kitten pictures, the site gets a great thumbs up from me.
I've despised Ohio State since I was a kid, since we went to the 95 citrus bowl between Bama and Ohio State. Their fans were really obnoxious, and these two grown men from Ohio made fun of my Derrick Thomas Bama shirt. (The most prized possession I own, is a jersey signed by Derrick himself, so he's a big deal to me.) My Dad and Uncle being your typical quick tempered southerners, quickly asked them if they wanted to "Continue the conversation outside the stadium".
I'm actually in Michigan until May right now for work as well, so it's cool to get fully involved in all things Michigan. I'm happy to talk about any questions y'all may have about Alabama, not that I'm an expert, but I'm happy to try.
Some important notes to know before you classify me as a fan.
-I'm not a fan of over signing
-I love Nick Saban, but I don't approve of the methods in which the SEC uses to succeed
-Yes, Bear Bryant is God in Alabama
-I graduated from the University of Alabama in 08
-Yes, I understand my fellow Bama fans are eccentric, but at their heart, they really love college football.
Thanks for having me, guys. If this is too off topic, please delete it. I just wanted to set the record straight about why I started posting here, because some were commenting on it.

I am in my fourth (and final) year here doing James Madison. I was at cedar fest freshman and sophmore year (both final fours, plus the final four victory) and came out of that experience still proclaiming that Manny Harris was a 1st rounder...
I've attended 2 MSU games at home per year, and left before half time for every one in which we were not playing Michigan (granted that last year when they beat Iowa in OT it was in the negatives and quite frankly I didn't care much whether they would win or lose).
I would say my fanhood is pretty damn set at this point, but you never know...

My wife's uncle played for 'Bama from 50-54. He can be seen giving chase in the 54 Cotton Bowl play where Tommy Lewis makes his famous tackle. Uncle Vince swears he had the angle on the guy!
Anyway, he still has his season tix (right behind Tommy Lewis's) so I've made it out to Archibald's in Northport for a pregame meal then to the stadium 3 times now. It's a great experience. Hope my schedule works out so I can go to Dallas next fall.

The Dude: What’s with all the boxes?
Bromigo: Going to UCLA.
The Dude: Congrats Bromigo. Headed back to school for the ole MBA?
Bromigo: Not that UCLA. I am moving to UCLA as in Un- Cultured Lower Alabama.
End scene.

Alabama has been interesting to follow the last few years. I've admired Kelsi Dunne , but I think she has graduated.

Not to reignite all that, but let me just say that this year, watching the MMB videos of the Sugar Bowl trip....the absolute best part , IMO, was watching the band explode at the end of the game. It was a great move to keep the camera on them.
I thought, there are some people who are at every home game and many road games and then some, watching every down, in all kinds of weather, there for the team and the fans, and I am just as happy for the MMB as I was for team #132. Your support of the football team is hugely appreciated, and I know I am far, FAR from the only fan to feel this way.

any update on Mosely? The injury looked pretty bad. Then I heard spring ball, which shocked me. Will he be 100% for the game?
(LB that got his knee destroyed by Jefferson after he threw an INT right to him than ran up and tackled him as only a QB can do)

I always enjoy the non-trolling opponent fan who gives some perspective to some of the more megalomaniacal opinions around here. Hope you stick around.

I would be curious as to your thoughts on the whole Rich Rod and Alabama courtship and how you ended up getting Saban.
It obviously turned out really good for you in the end, but how devasted was the fan base when RR turned down the Tide? And how was the reaction to the Saban hiring? Did you feel at the time that Alabama got the better deal in the end. Did anyone envision anyting remotely close to what Saban has acomplished?
Sorry to the board for brining up RR here, but I am really curious how the reaction in Bama was over this time period.
Thanks RDT.

I came here, naturally, as an ND fan trollin.
I stayed for the great info and superior intellectual humour. And the coffee.

Wait a minute.... you hate kittens?
February 15th, 2012 at 9:41 AM ^
I have to say my hatred for Alabama extends to Nick Saban's being really good at coaching and the fact that Traffic around here during the 'Bama game is just stupid. You, however, have much respect from me. Of course, that will go down a few pegs if you turn out to be a pastel polo and sperry wearing southern guy with terribly wavy hair. I am convinced that these only exisist in large numbers at Auburn, Alabama, and South Carolina.

don't forget ole miss..

Oh my God, you have described the EXACT same thing as me a few posts down. I hate those typical "southern guys". Also, they definitely exist at LSU, NC State, Georgia, and even Florida.
February 15th, 2012 at 11:40 AM ^
I am thinking of the major infestations of these sothern gentleman bro's, though. I forgot Ole Miss and Clemson; I don't think the other schools register much above the normal background douchiness that exisits here at major southern universities. I mean, they are here in Knoxville, too, but its more like a natural occurance rather than a terrible scourge like it is at the afformentioned schools.

Simply, which do you see as the bigger rivalry? UM vs OSU or AU vs. UA?
I ask for these reasons. I have had the fortune of growing up a Michigan fan in Columbus for 14 years. I winessed the rivalry for many years and the passion for The Game.
For the last 12 years I have lived in Birmingham/Tuscaloosa (bama grad '04), central to the UA vs. AU rivalry.
Speaking as objectively as I can, I see The Game as the bigger rivalry game simply because the elite nature of the programs and the rich history. Obviously, Alabama can be described this way, but I don't believe Auburn can.
Simply put, when you talk about elite and storied programs around the country, Auburn is not even in the conversation. Therefore, I can't take the Iron Bowl as seriously as The Game - Alabama is just superior to Auburn in every facet of college foorball - history, prestige, success, currently, etc. OSU and M are much more even.
Interested in your take?

I was in New Orleans for the Alabama/LSU game and I must state, without a doubt, that the Alabama fans were, by far, the better of the fans. LSU fans came across as arrogant, and rude to myself and the group I was with while we had an absolute blast with the Bama fans at both the hotel and at the game.
As to RollDamnTide, I find your posts informative and objective and that is always appreciated.

Hey RDT, welcome to MGoBlog, and thanks for not being a troll. 3 questions if you're still checking this thread:
I'm a Michigan alum at Florida for grad school, and I've seen a lot of these football programs. Of all the teams, I think Georgia has the absolute worst fans. Tennessee was also pretty bad, but nothing matches Georgia where their women and mascot bark alike. What are your's and Alabama's most hated SEC schools (besides Alabama's obvious choice of Auburn)?
Maybe you can give me some insight. What is with all of the "southern gentlemen" frat assholes? You know what I'm talking about. Slightly overweight, obnoxious fraternity brothers with thick southern accents, deck shoes, cargo or khaki shorts, tucked-in polos, RayBans? I've encountered this class of students at nearly every southern school I've seen, SEC and ACC alike. They are the exact opposite of "gentlemen", often offending everyone within earshot. I'm assuming it's just a phase these undergrad "bros" go through, or a niche group on campuses in the south.
What is your opinion on the 14 team conference, particularly the addition of Mizzou and A&M? Think they can hack it? How much is it a true conference if you don't play almost half the teams each season?
Your points are spot-on; Alabama is a classy football program with a sneaky coach. Saban understands the game, particularly the SEC, that you have to step on some toes/heads to make it to the top. I don't necessarily approve of it, but he does what his peers do better from a recruiting standpoint.

Hey Tide,
I always enjoy talking with reasonable fans from other programs as they add a lot to the conversation.
I really wish the Bama game, instead of being at Jerry's world, were a home and away two game set. I understand that the Bama folks went out of their way to welcome Penn State fans when they visited Tuscaloosa, and the opposite happend when your brethren went to State College, or is that merely a rumor.
I very much enjoy going to different schools for games except when the game is in Columbus and events, such as our fearless leader Brian portrayed in this very funny piece:

I don't like cats either. I'll take a dog any day of the week and Go Blue!

BTW RDT, congrats on your National Championship.
It's a shame, but there has been almost no buzz about it whatsoever. College football fans seem to have just dropped it and moved on. I'm sure it's because of them being miffed about the whole intra-conference intra-division matchup thing.
But it was one of the most dominating performances in a National Championship game in history.
