OT: Why I came to MgoBlog

Submitted by RollDamnTide on

I thought I would take a couple minutes to explain why I started posting on MgoBlog. Mostly, it was to just see how Michigan fans were reacting to the upcoming game with Bama. My other reason, was to follow recruiting from another view point. I'm a huge recruiting nerd, so I find those things interesting. My Dad went to grad school at Michigan, and he always wanted me to go at some point. I didn't, choosing instead to save my Dad a considerable amount of money, and going to UofA. I've always respected Michigan's program, and you guys have done nothing to refute that thought. And while I don't get into the hockey/softball/and kitten pictures, the site gets a great thumbs up from me.

I've despised Ohio State since I was a kid, since we went to the 95 citrus bowl between Bama and Ohio State. Their fans were really obnoxious, and these two grown men from Ohio  made fun of my Derrick Thomas Bama shirt. (The most prized possession I own, is a jersey signed by Derrick himself, so he's a big deal to me.) My Dad and Uncle being your typical quick tempered southerners, quickly asked them if they wanted to "Continue the conversation outside the stadium".

I'm actually in Michigan until May right now for work as well, so it's cool to get fully involved in all things Michigan. I'm happy to talk about any questions y'all may have about Alabama, not that I'm an expert, but I'm happy to try.

Some important notes to know before you classify me as a fan.

-I'm not a fan of over signing

-I love Nick Saban, but I don't approve of the methods in which the SEC uses to succeed

-Yes, Bear Bryant is God in Alabama

-I graduated from the University of Alabama in 08

-Yes, I understand my fellow Bama fans are eccentric, but at their heart, they really love college football.

Thanks for having me, guys. If this is too off topic, please delete it. I just wanted to set the record straight about why I started posting here, because some were commenting on it.

MSU was supposedly Saban's "dream job" when he took it.  The administration was in the middle of the first wave of "presidents taking athletics back from the athletic departments," and meddled in the football program so badly that Saban got pissed and left.

In other words, MSU turned Nick Saban into a pastoral nomad.  Think of where MSU would be today if they had simply kissed Nick Saban's ass.

Is the movie Happy Gilmore a thinly-veiled satire of the University of Alabama football team? No disrespect intended at all; I'm usually more engrossed in answering people's questions about event horizons than researching movies.

Either way, welcome to MGoBlog my friend!

I have a question for you.  You mentioned on a thread a few days ago that the dislike we have for Meyer is nothing compared to the hatred he generates in the SEC.  I believe you but I'm curious as to why you think that is the case.  Is it because he won consistently?   Because he generally looks (and acts) like a humanoid-weazel? Because of the backlash against Tebow?  Or was it something else entirely?   And do think he's going to last long at OSU or will be 3 and out as he has been virtually everywhere he's coached?

Thanks - your opinion here is appreciated.

Lets be honest, each SEC school hates the other SEC school's coach. With Urb, the stakes each game provided, probably lead to the hatred. In the south, however, each recruiting battle is on the evening news. They know the kids name, his position, and what his top 3 schools are. My 90 year old Grandmother can probably tell you where Robert Nkemdiche goes to high school, and where he's leaning. So, if Alabama happened to lose out on a recruit to say Florida, under somewhat shady circumstances, it gets heated quickly. The other thing, is that there's a lot of hate in the SEC, when you have multiple legal troubles in succession. Doesn't matter if your school is having the same problem, it makes you dislike that school. With Urb, it didn't matter, it happened so often, that it became a running joke.

Bama Fan: Hey, did you hear they improved the 40 yard dash times at Florida?

Random guy: No, how?

Bama Fan: They replaced the whistle with polics sirens.

Thanks for this, I was thinking of posting a forum question asking you all this anyway!

So - do you watch UM games? And root for Michigan as your second team?

Also, where are you in Michigan? Are you going to come to see the Big House while you are here? Spring Game perhaps?

Your point of view adds to the blog.  Personally, I'd like to see a cage match between you and RationalMSUFan.

In the vein of MGoBlog, it would probably end up being a statistical analysis of the 2011 Capital One Bowl or something.  Which would also be interesting, I guess.

I'm going to have to put this on the backburner.  A good diary topic; one would need to have Plutarch and some late 90's MSU football literature handy for a full treatment.

Offhand, I'd think Saban's closest analogue would be Alcibiades (in the sense that he is engaged in a life-long search for the largest platform to stand on, with no loyalty to any particular platform), but that doesn't speak to your topic.

I came because MLive sucks.  Your story is good, too, though.

More generally, you still seem too good to be true.  I'm sticking with my theory that you're part of a brilliant, diabolical, Saban-hatched plan to win over other fan bases.

I used to hate Alabama for no reason other than I thought all they did was cheat and all their fans thought the Big Ten was second class. All that changed when I went down to the Sugar Bowl. I was in at a Subway just north of the Alabama border, and a group of Bama fans saw us wearing Michigan gear and congratulated us on the bowl win and told us how good of a coach they thought Brady Hoke was. Long story short I realized that Bama fans are not evil they are just crazy for football, making them my favorite SEC school.

i attended the 2000 sugar bowl and 1988 hall of fame bowls against bama.  i didn't see any obnoxious bama fans.  just people generally having fun.  many wearing those silly roll-tide-roll hats (2 rolls of TP with a Tide box in between).  but hey, no issues at all.

maybe it was because the good guys won both those games though.

the only stadiums where i've come accross several obnoxious fans are msu and illinois.  though, i have yet to go to osu for a game.  this coming year maybe.  even ND and PSU fans congratulated me after wins in their stadium.

It's definitely nice having fans of other programs on the board that provide insight from different, yet logical and respective view points. It would be nice if there were more people like RDT that represent schools we compete against without feeling the need to act like trolls.

I'm a lifelong Michigan fan, and haven't missed a home game since I was 2. But Alabama fans will forever have a place in my heart. I was at the Orange Bowl in 2000 and got seperated from my parents (I was 7 at the time) and two Alabama fans stood by me and calmed me down through most of the 3rd quarter until my parents were able to find me.

So I will always have a special place for Bama and their fans.

your posts RTD. I have been a life long Michigan fan. However, I've liked Alabama since the late 70's. That 79 Bama team was terrific. Although I swear, Major Ogilvie seemed to have 8 years of eligibility.

Why can't Ohio fans be as cool as the OP? Oh wait, it's because they're all assholes with nothing to live for other than hating all things Michigan related.

I thought I would take this opportunity to join the blog and introduce myself as well.

In short, I am a student at MSU yet have been an avid Michigan fan my entire life. I have read this blog and others for years and RollDamnTide's post and its positive reception inspired me to make a small entrance of my own.

I think I have a firm grasp on board etiquette, and hopefully can contribute to discussion in the future. I also live with 5 fanatic MSU fans, and can definitely provide insight into the way these guys think...

Anyways, thanks for the years of recruiting information and game breakdowns and I look forward to joining the board!
