OT - Who lost power due to the Great Ice Storm.

Submitted by MGJS SuperKick Party on
Hey, last night my house got hammered with ice. A tree fell on the transformer, and now we are projected to get power back on Friday. I am in the Fenton area.
Anyone else lose power/need to complain?

Where about in Fenton? I'm also in Fenton without power. Second time in two months without power. First time was the wind storm a few weeks ago a tree fell on our power lines. I'm doing crazy good with luck this year.

near Grand Haven.  I'm a little worried because all of the trees are iced up, and we'll be getting a pile of snow on top of the ice.  The worst could be later this week.  Oh joy, Christmas without power.

Owosso here with power, but I'm pretty sure a majority of the city doesn't. The real hassle is trying to pick up my grandparents from the airport. They were scheduled to land in Lansing, but got redirected to Toledo. Still trying to figure out how we're going to get them home and/or if their flight will take back off for Lansing at some point today.

Here in Flint almost every person I know has lost power. My power popped off and on a few times last night but thankfully I woke up and still had power. I must've got lucky because my dad's house is about 3 min down the road and he lost power.

south of sag.  We have power, but about 3 inches of snow, ice and slush on the ground that needs to be shoveled before it freezes over.  I will make my kids do it, they need to help out more!  Pretty scene, though.

I am in the Fenton/Linden area too and have no power. We had some tree branches down in the backyard . My hubby is dealing with the sump pump today we will definitely have to look into the battery backup suggestion.

If you have at least 50 PSI of water pressure, then you can purchase a sump pump that runs on water pressure. It works great and have not had to worry about the sump pump the last 4 years. We like to take several 1 week vacations and I no longer have to worry about the sump pump failing or losing power.

but I DID feel an earthquake here a few nights ago, so there's that.

One of the trade offs with the warm weather of southern california; no ice storms, no snow, but there's that fear of a big earthquake and your whole state sinking into the ocean thing to worry about.

I'm in Eastside neighborhood in Lansing.  Power is still on, but large tree branches from a 100ft oak tree are down, and a cable-line to my house is also on the ground.

It seems like quite the huge ice storm.  We have about 1/2 inch of ice here in central Oklahoma, but there have not been widespread power outages.  I'm in an area of all underground utilities, so no problems at all in my neighborhood.

Couldn't help but think of the Freezing rainstorm of '69..maybe '70. All of SE Michigan was an ice sheet.   My lasting memory having to walk about a mile and half home after the bus slid into a ditch filled with icey water.  Walk on the crown of the road, slip and then slide down into the ditch.  Crawl back up to the crown of the road and do it all over again.  What a miserable afternoon, though I don't recall that we lost power.

We're good to go here in the city of Grand Blanc.  However, the township is out, including my gym.  That's a key back-up plan for a shower, and it sucks when it's down too.

but no ice, so no problem.   installed automatic 15 KW generator within weeks of buying this house years ago, fueled by 1,000 gal of propane.  suggest you folks do the same and i hope you only have to deal with minor inconveniences in the meantime.

OMG it's mayhem don't leave your house, lock your doors, it's armegeddon, Oh My Gods. Please, please oh lord help us. We will all be dead by morning. Ok it's not all that or anywhere near that. But my power just came on only because we were put on the first to get power list like the stores and the like. Because all the kids in my house (yes I said ALL of them) have Autism or Aspergers which is a form of Autism. My neighbor and the rest of the subdivision still have their generators running. Good thing I don't have anywhere to go, there are tree branches blocking the roads to the point of taking different routes to get to where you want to go. So it's official, winter is here, and you need to get out and buy Christmas gifts for your loved ones and friends. Merry Christmas and Go Blue!!! Beat K State!!!

edit:  not sure why the consumer page isn't working, it was earlier and looked alot like the DTE page.

Also note a city like Lansing won't show up on this map because they have their own utility.  In lansing its BWL.  There are widespread power outages across Lansing.

My mom's power is out near Grand Blanc. Unfortunately, I'm in Key West and can't help. But fortunately, she's ok and I'm still in Key West.

When Hurricaine Sandy hit NJ we were without power for two weeks. A battery backup for a sump pump will only work for an hour or so if the pump is running constantly. Get a generator or whole house backup generator that runs on natural gas.

Unfortunately, gas stations could not pump gas, restaurants closed and grocery stores would only take cash (credit card machines need juice) and could only sell non perishable foods. All their frozen foods had to be thrown out.

Within about 3 days there started to be some panic. It's amazing what you take for granted.

Good luck to everyone without power. Hopefully you have heat, food and water.
