OT - Which state flag do you like / hate the most?

Submitted by ann.arbor.lover on

Slow Friday afternoon... might as well start something discussion-worthy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_the_U.S._states

Which state flag do you love or hate the most? For me, the favorite is Alaska's: Simple, meaningful and easily stand out. The worst is Maryland's... The pattern, the Confederate-related cross and it just looks bad anywhere (not only on uniforms). Bonus: Most schizophrenic - Oregons's. A yellow beaver on the reverse side?! Really?!

So what's yours?

Let's use all the power words division:

Flag of Illinois (June 27, 1969)

Eagles and America. The eagle is pooping sunshine because the tenacity is greatness.

Flag of Iowa (March 12, 1921)

This eagle wants to have words with you.

First person to move in gets to design the flag division:

Flag of Oregon (reverse) Flag of Oregon (obverse) (April 15, 1925)[8]

Get it? I saw a beaver in the backyard. Also in 1859 we didn't have ruled stencils so...

Flag of Oklahoma (November 1, 2006)[6][7]

Me injun, you chief, she squaw. Awahwahwahwahwhawhwah! This is still politically correct right?

Flag of Washington[19] (August 25, 1923)

In case you thought we meant Washington Irving, though he was cool too.

Flag of Alaska (July 6, 1927)

That.

Um, you realize we threw off the yoke of the tyrannical British aristocracy right?

Flag of Maryland (November 25, 1904)

Is that like Banana Republic? Do you sell flannel shorts in this establishment? You look like you sell flannel shorts.

Flag of California (February 3, 1911)

Let's all copy New York's Flag Division:

New York's flag: Flag of New York (April 1, 1901)

Good luck guessing who these are without zooming in:

1907: Flag of Pennsylvania (April 24, 1907)

1909: Flag of Maine (June 16, 1909)

1911: Flag of Michigan (June 26, 1911)

1913: Flag of Delaware (July 24, 1913)

1918: Flag of Kentucky (March 26, 1918)

1983: Flag of Minnesota (August 2, 1983)

1943: Flag of North Dakota (November 9, 1943)

1950: Flag of Idaho (November 2, 1957)Flag of Minnesota(August 1957 – August 1983)

1957: Flag of Virginia (February 1, 1950)[18]

1963: Flag of Nebraska (July 16, 1963)

2011: Flag of Utah (February 16, 2011)[10][11][12][13]

Same as above but good job you put your name on it division:

Flag of Wisconsin (September 17, 1979) Flag of Kansas (September 22, 1961) Flag of Montana (December 17, 1981)

States already thinking ahead to what the hockey jersey might look like:

Flag of Colorado (December 4, 1911)

nice.

Flag of Arizona (January 25, 1917)

A little busy but okay.

Flag of Arkansas (March 16, 1924)

Classic.

Flag of New Mexico (September 18, 1920)

Very cool.

Flag of Tennessee (February 3, 1905)

Too many teams with those colors already but good logo.

Flag of Texas (August 31, 1933)

Too big.

Classiest flag relative to classiness of the state:

Flag of West Virginia (November 6, 1929)

I'd invite that to dinner, and would be highly surprised when it doesn't wear shoes.

We're MARITIME SEE?

Flag of Rhode Island (July 27, 1640, formally November 1, 1897)Flag of Massachusetts (March 21, 1971)

So you're Scotland?

Flag of Alabama(February 16, 1895)[1] Flag of Florida( May 21, 1985)

Flag I secretly admire (it's original and classy okay?!?)

Flag of Ohio (May 9, 1902)

I'd say my favorite is Hawaii and my least favorite is Arkansas. It makes me think of the welcome to Las Vegas sign, but without any fun.

Favorites would be Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina, with their reference to the CSA.

Also like California with the roaming bear.

Worst is Maryland.  Bad color combination and design.

Best: New Mexico. Simple, distinctive, geographically appropriate, and just looks cool. Runner-up: South Carolina. That moon is sweet.

Worst: Mississippi. The secesh flag belongs in a museum. Runner-up: N-way tie between every state that uses a seal on a bedsheet. State seals are meant to be looked at up close. Flags have to be recognizable from a distance.

Though the South Carolina flag is cool. Colorado also has the best license plate in my opinion. The current main Michigan plate is a disaster

I am only familiar with a handful of state flags, one of which is not Ohio. Thus, I can say with 100% confidence, "I hate Ohio's state flag."

Absolutely love it. Neat and clean. I also love California's. A freaking bear! It's awesome. "California Republic" is so nice and clean.

Worst has to be Mississippi for obvious reasons.

Does anyone else not really like Michigan's flag? Elk? Moose? Why? Do they even live here? Latin? I'd love for a flag to be the color of our state flower (Iris lacustris). How many state flags are dark purple. It's a cool flag color. A yellow Macinac Bridge on a purple flag, with the Great Lakes faded behind the bridge. Could have "mishigamaa" on it.

Yes, elk and moose do live here.  Moose especially are quite numerous in the U.P.

But I agree that it's not the best flag - it's too similar to a bunch of other states' flags.  A flag, above all, should be easily recognizeable.  If you put all the state flags together, it'd be hard to pick out Michigan's.

Hawai'i is cool with both the dimensions and the colors.

Idaho is almost square.

Among the other territories, Guam could stand in for a College Football Playoff flag.  And American Samoa is crazy long with the triangle field away from the pole which is pretty strange.

They've been talking about a change in PR's status for so long, I doubt anything will change in the next 50 years.  Like a state, no federal income tax, get to be represented in international sports like their own country.  And too much fighting among the different factions to ever unify on a choice for change.  Even the last plebescite was ambiguous due to vote counters not following PR's own voting laws/rules in counting ballots.

The Colorado flag has been merchandised and bastardized almost beyond recognition at this point.

Great flag, great state now overrun with transplanted population.

King K version of Hawaiian flag is sweet ...green, red & yellow
