OT- Where do you MGO on summer vacation?

Submitted by uofmdds96 on
Sunday we are headed down to Myrtle Beach, SC for the week. We have be to the same resort, Kingston Plantation, for the past 8 years. It is convenient, 2 hours by plane from DTW, and predictable. There are always new things to do for us, since it is a tourist trap filled area. Last year, thanks to Trip Advisor, we went 4 wheeling in North Carolina. We have Myrtle waves waterpark, Broadway at the Beach, NASCAR go karts, alligator adventure... On and on. We know the restaurants and get a condo. Walmart is down the street for stocking up on meals and beach stuff. A CE course that is there originally drew me there, and draws me back, but I might consider another venue next summer. Where does everyone else go to year in and year out?

I just started a new job so no accrued time as of yet but I am shipping the wife and kids down to S.A. for my brother in laws wedding for a month. So I guess I'll have a month of quiet peace and the opportunity to work late without interruptions to get acclimated to the new gig.

Back in Summer 2006 we rented 4 cottages next to each other up there. Our group was told by our waitress at the Sandbar - before it was 10 PM, mind you - that we set the record for total pitchers ordered.(we'd only been there for like 2 1/2 hours) We stayed for another 2 hours and put that record way out of reach.

My favorite vacation spots: Hawaii (the Big Island) - perfect weather, perfect setting, swim with sea turtles as much as you want. Alaska - if you want to enjoy nature, it does not get much more primordial than Alaska. Go to rivers where there is so much salmon, you can literally grab them by hand. And there is nothing like making drinks with 10,000 year old glacier ice.

because we put in a pool last year.  But recently we took a trip to Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown Victory Center and Jamestowne Settlement.  (Oh, and Busch Gardens/Water Country).  Great time, I highly recommend it to anyone with kids interested in history.

...on Chippewa Lake. (about 20 minutes NE of Ferris State Univ.) Biggest, ruralest lake in Mecosta county. Chillin, grillin, boatin, fishin.

And the star gazing. Nothing like soaking in the night sky away from all the city lights.

We like to gather all the child folk around our mashed potato and shrubbery replica of Devils Mountain, wheel out the pipe organ and await a close encounter. (the fourth kind of close encounter - third's jumped the shark)

My family has a summer place in Northern Minnesota (far away, but dirt cheap on a massive lake that is only about 10% developed) that I go to every summer. Beautiful area.

And then NYC because it is NYC

We are long-time Michigania campers and have had amazing times there.  It is hard to beat as a family vacation - great location in northern Michigan, lots of activities for kids and adults, great staff, the chance to sing The Victors multiple times with other alums.  Our kids grew up going there and we have lots of great family memories.

Last year we spent a week in Virginia Beach.  My cousin is stationed there the in the Navy.  This year we are going to Gulf Shores Alabama for 11 days.  Doing some deep sea fishing and just relaxing in the beach front condo.

For the past 20 years we've gone to northern Wisconsin, for many years to Door County and more recently the Lake Tomahawk area. This year is special - 25th wedding anniversary - so in two weeks we're headed to Great Britain.

We spent most of our time in Sister Bay, but there are several quaint towns like Egg Harbor, Fish Creek and Bailey's Harbor with shops. Highly recommend American Folklore Theater in Peninsula State Park. Washington Island is a nice excursion. Food-wise, there's a lot - Wilson's Ice Cream in Ephraim, Sister Bay Cafe, White Gull Inn in Fish Creek, many more. Enjoy!

Door County is known as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest," and aptly so.  I was up there right before Memorial Day on business, and I loved it.  I'm going back there this week for another business trip - I have to visit Egg Harbor, Ephraim and Bailey's Harbor.

When I was crossing the bridge at Sturgeon Bay, there was a massive yacht at that shipyard there (200'-plus long).  It apparently was just built for some Russian bazillionaire or a Kiwi - got different stories.  Here is a video of the yacht:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuwjEtUNiZk

Emmet County, a few miles east of Petoskey. My high school track coach (friend of my father, who taught and coached with him) has a cottage there and we've gone up for a week or two pretty much every year since the late '60s. Sometimes in July, sometimes at the end of the season in late September/early October.

The PE teacher at the high school loved the place so much he bought the camp next door and spent his retirement trying to rehab it. He passed on a while back and it's now a pretty nice county park.

The fishing's not what it was 45 years ago but it's still paradise. And some of you probably live up there year-round.

we have one of the top ten "clean" beaches in the nation and our lighthouse and pier was on the cover of the U.S. Atlas in the late 90s.  However, when the weather starts changing and the snow even begins to think of falling, I head for a quiet little Mexican village named Ajijic and stay from November thru at least Apr.  This year, that was one month too soon.  Town is full of expats-lots of gringos and Canadians, but it's cheap and I fall down a lot during that period due to the tequila. But I always get up; have so far anyway.  Really makes me realize how fucked up America is whenever I come back though. That's the only downside.

I'm typing this as I wait for my table at North Peak Brewing Co in Traverse City. This has been our 24th year of going up with the family on a resort off Lake Arbutus.

I'm a teacher, so I have plenty of travel time in the summer. Chicago, Higgins, Traverse, Grand Rapids and maybe Glacier NP are all on the docket. Have already hit Jackson Hole and Capitol Reef this year (live in Salt Lake).

We spent last week vacationing in Aspen, CO.  We did a ton of amazing hiking and sampled the Aspen Food and Wine Festival.

If you have never spent time in the Colorado Rockies in the summer, I hope you get the opportunity.  It is a treat.
