OT - Where Are You Going for Easter/Spring Break

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

It is a very slow time of year re: Michigan sports, and everyone seems to like our recent convo's about some personal stuff so lets push on.  Today's question is:  Where are you going for your Easter/Spring break this year?   If you are staying put, then detail a favorite spring trip you took, but no MTV house party stories (is that still a thing?), we want to be gracious to our lady Mgobloggers.

want us to tell spring break stories, but only the boring ones?

I got nothing then.  Every story I could tell involves some combination of alcohol, drugs, sex, handcuffs, jail, and the clap.

God I miss my 20's.

on your stories probably wouldn't mind the booze, drugs, jail or even the clap, so go right ahead.   just mildly mentioned the distant curb of not getting overly ribald in deference to the lady bloggers.  of course men don't mind that.

I'm currently studying abroad in Luxembourg! So some friends and I are going down south to Italy and Rome for about 10 days for spring break. We are hitting up Venice, Rome + Vatican, Athens, and then spending about 5 nights total on the Greek Islands, splitting time between Santorini and Mykonos. Our spring break isn't until beginning of April, so hopefully it will be a little warm there as well.

The wife and I took a cruise to those exact places (minus the Vatican, which I visited after high school) for our honeymoon. Mykonos was probably my favorite stop, just unbelievably beautiful. The gondolas in Venice are obviously super touristy, but it's still a cool experience.

My wife and I will be moving from Orlando back home to Fort Wayne. We did 4 years down here but a lot of different factors have weighed in to make the move back to Indiana. I will be moving back the end of March and will be attending the Spring Game.

I want to know what's up with LeBron James, the poster here, not the basketball player. What's up with the downvoting? He downvoted me when I posted about going to the Big Ten Tournament. What's up with all the negativity, dude?

3/3.  Male (capital of the Maldives) had a pretty brutal crackdown of political protests a few years ago in addition to being a pretty conservative Muslim state (restricted women's, gay rights, booze).

All the major cities (Doha, Male, Dubai) are just transit stops to get to our resort in the Maldives.

Not a huge fan of Qatar (abuse of immigrant workers, on top of financial/political support of terror groups.  However, we are saving about 60% on flights by going through Qatar as opposed to Dubai.

Who told you that?  Al Gore in his private jet and 30,000 sq. foot house telling us all to put on sweaters like a damn second coming of Jimminie "It's a Rabbit" Carter?!

It's in the middle of North Africa!  Hippie voodoo "global warming" (or have they officially retracted it back to "climate change" yet?) isn't going to sink North Africa and I'm not going to be scared into buying some Japanese wind-up electric car.

Heading to the Spring game.  Taking my 6 year old daughter to show her around the big house for the first time and enjoy the confines of Michigan Stadium.  I just broke the news to her last night and she is super excited to see the cheerleaders.   Hopefully, there are cheerleaders at the Spring game?.... but I did not want to burst her bubble if there were not.

First year without a family spring break - my son has to stay in town for baseball practices. So my daughter and I are heading to LA for a few days. We got tickets to the UCLA Oregon softball game. Hope the weather's nice.

I think my biggest parental accomplishment has been avoiding the Disney's. We did go to Legoland which is awesome - somehow less commercial and the food was vaguely European cafeteria style.

Well, if you want to analyze it..........Legos are are some of the better educational toys out there. Having gone through two kids, and many toys, I love Legos for their ability to creatively engage kids for hours, to give them an opportunity to either follow the rules or break out and create their own things. They're also good for fine motor skill development. Disney, on the other hand, teaches lessons like how to be pretty enough to be rescued by a prince because, you know, that's what girls do.

And I do....

But Disney is also one of the most remarkable and innovative companies in the world for their ability to create an immersive environment. That's their real "magic". I've studied Disney extensively and what they are actually selling is an experience. Sure, guests are paying for tickets, food, souvenirs, photographs and a zillion other things, but those are just the means to create revenue.

If you think about it, Apple is actually selling the same thing. Why would anyone pay 1.5X the price of the nearest competitor's electronic gizmo (especially when that other product is arguably a better one)? Because Apple is orchestrating a value proposition to both the consumer and its suppliers that enable it to create a walled garden (or Hotel California, if you prefer) from which you have little incentive to leave.

That's the business angle. The reason I go to Walt Disney World from time to time is because it's one of the few places where I feel like I am disconnected from the pressures of work. Sure, they have wi-fi and cell coverage in the parks, but I feel less inclined to constantly check my inbox and respond.

My wife and children have a pretty good time, too.

My husband took them to Disneyland 6 years ago, while I lay near death in our hotel room from the seasonal flu. I don't really have a problem with Disney per se, other than outdated gender roles from 1950, but the question of commercialism here is an easy one. Lego sells toys that are constructive and educational, and Disney sells itself. Lego sells far fewer items at its parks than Disney. Disney products spill out to airports and other places. I've been to Disneyworld (sans kids) and Legoland and the experiences from a commercial standpoint are different.

It's funny - you mentally unplug at Disneyland but for me, and my husband, both of us in advertising (and I grew up in an advertising household where all we talked about was branding), going to a place like that is overload for me. Too much selling.

i can tell you that i had a boatload of homicides that i handled that occured within a mile or two of there.  it is in the middle of nothing but parolees, prostitutes and gangsters so you are very good to avoid that place.
