OT: When do early action decisions usually come?

I have applied early action to UM and was wondering when the decisions usually come. The website says "no later than December 23rd" which makes me think that it should come at least a couple of days beforehand. When did they come last year?

I remember people getting in as early as October at least, so I'm pretty sure it was rolling admission rather than early action even as recently as 2004-05.

That's the date on my acceptance letter having applied through the regular admissions process, but I had friends then that applied "early action" and got their letters either way just short of Christmas, so early action admission was at least alive and well then.

I do student recruiting for the University. We were told in an email recently that WE will get our lists of admitted students from the schools we work on on the 23rd which means you will find out a couple of days before. This is later than we usually get our first batch but I know they got a lot of applications in before the early decision deadline.

I believe my sister said she found out on the last Thursday before the deadline last year, which would be around the 22nd this year. You usually get an email first, then the thick envelope in the mail a couple of days later.

For those who don't know, Michigan went the the Common App last year and eliminated rolling admissions, but guaranteed that applications in by a certain early date will have a decision by December. From what I've heard, the Common App increased applications by a lot, and it was difficult for the admissions office to handle the increase in applications to look through.

Expect early action responses about a week before Christmas.....but beware:  Michigan likes to hand out their early action decision as DEFERRED, and then you to wait another 1-3 months.  Deferred does not mean rejected, but rather they are still sorting though a gigantic number of applications and it will take more time.

Last year, become it was year one with the Common Application, when everything was so delayed that the NY Times did an article on the admission delays at UM.

I got my acceptance on 10-22-09, but that was before the common app so it appears that they're getting sent out later these days.

There is no "usually."  U-M used to be a rolling admissions school, with an early notification option.  With the common app (and the large number of apps)  it handles the "early" part with a threshold admissions process.  Meaning everyone gets a decision on the same day.   I would expect it after mid-December.

However, as snackyx points out, the "decision" that some students get is "we can't decide on you yet"

The NYT article last year was a little overblown.  The most applicants got a decision well before the April story came out.  Very few actually got admitted at that point.  The article made it out like thousands of kids just found out they could go to Michigan and had no time to get their ducks in a row and apply for aid, etc.  Not true.

I heard last year on the 16th.  Years before that heard earlier in Decmber.  I would not anticipate a decision exactly in mid-December. Be surprised, it's part of the fun. I still remember opening my email and flipping out like I'd never done in my life before that moment.

We here at the ReadYourGuard house are anxiously waiting for my son's notification.

 We've been told that we'll find out no later than December 23.   Man, that's gonna make a hell of a Christmas present.

Or......

<shudders>

PS:  He asked if he should apply to MSU as a fall back.   I said "Hell No".  He laughed and said, "glad to hear you say that.  I wasn't going to anyway."  Hell yea baby.  My son's got it.

I'm thinking about buying a ticket, but when I do so I will need to book a hotel too. Someone informed me that when you buy a ticket it says refunds will be given if they oversell? When I buy a ticket how do I know I actually have one? Any insight?
