OT: What is wrong with Connor Cook?

Submitted by massblue on

There is a lengthy article about Connor Cook.  I thought he was a very good college QB, but it seems his personality is going to cost him dearly.

One person says

“There’s just something put-offish about him,” an offensive coordinator for a third team said. “It appears to me – I could be dead wrong – but he’d be a guy that, when he got in the locker room, they’d try to eat him up and spit him out.”

It appears to me - and I could be dead wrong - but this article is all anonymous sources telling their opinions of somebody after meeting them once or perhaps never at all.

and effectiveness at managing the situation are often independant issues.

NFL teams could spend a bajillion dollars on scouting and vetting a draft pick and still be totally wrong.

That Connor Cook has this whacked out arrogant attitude that simply wasn't at all backed up by his actual talent. He seems to be a guy that's good, but thinks he is great, when he isn't. Worst is he goes out of his way to talk at people like he is something great. Making folks sort of gag. If this sound familiar it's because I could just as easily be describing Harbaugh.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this .gif is worth at least 10,000.  I'm kind of glad that Cook is by all reports a dickhead - all reports on Kirk Cousins are that he's a stand-up guy, and that juxtaposition of someone being an MSU QB and a good guy causes me all sorts of cognitive dissonance.

Connor Cook being a dickhead?  That's the old normal.

Also, I'd not noticed it before, but it's hilarious how Cook's teammates are grimacing to see Cook get the award.  Dantonio looks ready to felate Cook, but the rest look like someone just farted at a funeral.

The self appointed board police is probably the worst thing about this board.  It's the offseason and you're going to complain about about people talking about an MSU QB and the NFL draft?  Don't click on the link, but 147 replies so far shows you're in the minority.

as a Redskins fan I can tell you Cousins is loved by his teammates and he was always better liked than RG3. Cousins doesn't have a lot of natural talent, but his teammates really like him and play hard for him. Cook will not get that luxury in the NFL it sounds like, and he doesn't have the talent to make up for it.

The Broncos brought him in for a workout recently and some of the local media -- mainly former players -- have intimated the same.  That he might be a serviceable back up physically, has limited upside potential in the long run but isn't a very personable guy.

Locally some have compared him to Kyle Orton who was known to be a bit of a dick and surly with his teammates.

In the last 8 games the redskins played two teams that finished above .500, the panthers and the patriots.  They lost both games, cousins threw interceptions in both games and probably more importantly only threw 1 td in each game so its not like it was a 3 td 1 int game.  They lost both games scoring 10 and 16 points.  Cousins and the redskins might be good next year but call me when they get off that charmin soft schedule. Until then I don't buy it.

good qbs still play well against good teams.  Sure they generally will have slightly worse stats but they will also have good games against those teams.  He didn't lead his team to a single win against a team over .500.  Sure maybe he isn't so bad he detracts from their ability to win but it doesn't seem like he adds a ton positive either.  He is a neutral qb and the rest of the team wins or loses despite him, never because of him. That's not a recipe for long term success.

Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th round because he's not a natural talent.  At least, not in the conventional sense.  Very slow, average arm, meh college stats.  He was also hilariously underdeveloped, extremely intelligent and had a frenzied passion for the game, but these are considered "intangibles" by NFL scouts (also known as "idiots").

If you wanted natural talent by NFL standards, well, that was why Ryan Leaf was the #2 pick two years prior.

Crazy to think that if only he was voted captain, he would probably be a top 5 pick, maybe even number 1. But just because he is missing that, he could be a day 2 pick.

PLENTY of first round QBs are assholes - winning Miss Congeniality is not a prerequsit for being selected high in the draft.

Cook's issue is arm strength or lack thereof.  He is considered to be both the most "pro-ready" and "lowest ceiling" QB prospect in the draft.
