OT: What should I be listening to?

Submitted by Magnus on

Okay, it's still the offseason, and we haven't had one of these in a long time.  I'm in a bit of a rut when it comes to new music because my subscriptions to Magnet and Paste ran out.

My most recent purchases are:

Gorillaz - "Plastic Beach"
Nada Surf - "If I Had a Hi-Fi"
Neutral Milk Hotel - "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"
She and Him - "Volume 2"
Frontier Ruckus - "The Orion Songbook"

What's in your CD player or iPod, and what should I be listening to?

Ive been loving Mash's revenge with Dilla and the excellent Guilty Simpson. Detroit's own Paradime is also set to drop his next album this summer, its heat.

Off the top of my head: Sufjan Stevens, James Blake, Explosions in the Sky, Mumford and Sons, Bon Iver, Caribou, Chiddy Bang, Wale, Titus Andronicus, Fleet Foxes, Noah and the Whale, The National, Sleigh Bells, Ratatat, The Tallest Man on Earth, We Were Promised Jetpacks, and Yeasayer

That should keep you occupied.

Mumford and Sons and Bon Iver, yes! I hear Bon Iver is coming out with some new stuff. Can't wait for that.

Oh, and toMagnus - I also like some Matt Waddle (Obadiah Parker) has a pretty sweet Live Album where they cover "Hey Ya" by Outkast. It was on the Finale of Scrubs I think like 4 years ago or something. The rest of the album is pretty good. You really can't go wrong with a little Pearl Jam to cleanse the eardrums every now and then either.

Check out some Black Keys, but go with their older stuff, or some live stuff.  Some of their best stuff is live on Youtube:

Their latest album is a bit over produced, in my opinion.

Can't go wrong with Muse either:

1. Smith Westerns, Dye it Blonde

2. The TuneYards, WHOKILL

If you like Arcade Fire/ Black Keys type shit, you'll love this. Way more talented bands, and not as poppy. Middle schoolers aren't jamming this shit.

you should listen to OFWGKTA, don't worry about what sara and teegan say, they are awesome.  Also listen to some of their members solo albums, like earl sweatshirt - earl and tyler the creators new album.

A new TOOL album will be coming out this year, enough said

check out Animals as Leaders also, their song CAFO is pretty awesome if you like prog metal......don't worry there are no vocals so no screaming or growling if you aren't into that, it is some of the best guitar ever though

it was supposed to be out late last year, it looks like it will be out this fall......you know what that means, a tour.  I don't know if you have seen them but i strongly encourage you and any other member reading this to see them when they tour for the new album, they are AMAZING.  in fact i needed my maynard fix so bad that i sat by the computer at 10 am when APC tickets at the fox theater went on sale and got 1st row balcony seat, so stoked

I feel ya brother!!!  Saw them at the Fox when they released 10000 days!!!  Amazing face melting experience.  I have seen them several times over the years both in Detroit (DTE, Palace, Milan) and in Portland.  I too have APC tix for the Schnitzer auditorium out here to get my Maynard fix.  I can not wait to hear TOOL's new stuff, though!!  Enjoy the show my man!!
