OT: What should I be listening to?
Okay, it's still the offseason, and we haven't had one of these in a long time. I'm in a bit of a rut when it comes to new music because my subscriptions to Magnet and Paste ran out.
My most recent purchases are:
Gorillaz - "Plastic Beach"
Nada Surf - "If I Had a Hi-Fi"
Neutral Milk Hotel - "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"
She and Him - "Volume 2"
Frontier Ruckus - "The Orion Songbook"
What's in your CD player or iPod, and what should I be listening to?
Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket, Dr Dog, Arcade Fire, the Black Keys
I'm not a big fan of the Black Keys, but I like the other four. I just discovered Fleet Foxes a couple months ago and really started digging them.
Probably not based on what you've said so far but if you need advice on some country i'm your man
I'm not a big fan of new country, although Loretta Lynn and Johnny Cash were pretty sweet.
That they were. Can't beat some classic Johnny
Disco Biscuits / Umphreys Mcgee.. What more do you need?
great, if you like funk read back by great contemporary musicians through 70s Nigerian funk, S. African township jive, Studio 54 disco, AACM jazz, and Ethiopian police music:
Neutral Milk Hotel - "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" <<<< Nice album
On Avery Island camp though I appear to be in a minority as NMH fans go. Aeroplane gets monotonous at times--more highs and lows.
New PJ Harvey, Pains of being Pure at Heart are two faves based on the songs played by KEXP in seattle. John in the morning rules.
And whenever I see his name I think of Nmh and their recluse lead singer. Truly some amazing stuff that defies categorization and is the root of a million bands and is actually good to listen to and sing along with.
as i lay dying, lamb of god, and pantera
Also this assortment of metal: Amon Amarth, Born of Osiris, All That Remains
live it was amazing
I love them live. Everyone should have their face melted by ATR at least once.
the new album wasnt that good they were looking to be more radio friendly. ive seen after the burial and as i lay dying live too and that was by far the best concert ive been too
Childish Gambino is the only one off the top of my head I can think of that you might not of heard before.

from the Kidz Bop collection.
If you like rap, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA) are like the hottest thing out there right now, but it's unbelievably vulgar. Tyler, The Creator's new CD Goblin is their first per pay CD. Their website has 12 albums for free download, the Hodgy Beats and Earl Sweatshirt stuff is probably the best.
Bright Eyes - The People's Key
Cage the Elephant - Thank you, Happy Birthday
The Limousines - Get Sharp
The Strokes - Angles
The Kills - Blood Pressures
Radiohead - The King of Limbs
Cake - Showroom of Compassion
Sarah Jaffe - Suburban Nature
The Black Keys - Brothers
also agree with Arcade Fire, Decemberists and Panda Bear - maybe add Florence and the Machine to the list. Anyone hear the new Death Cab album yet? I've tried to like Cut Copy, Deerhunter, and Beach House but not my thing at this point...
beat me to it. Nice selections!
This is a cool thread and has given me some groups/albums to look into. I'm wondering about the new Foo Fighters and Beastie Boys albums as well - seems like a lot of good music coming out.
I am very much liking the new Foo Fighters.
I'm going to see Bright eyes in a couple weeks. Pretty excited about it.
You've got some good suggestions in there. I'm not a big fan of Beach House, either, although Cut Copy is kind of catchy...
Ladder song is great off the new album. I'd love to see Connor in concert. Is this in AA?
Nah, I don't live in Michigan anymore. It's over in Pennsylvania.
I think The People's Key is the best album I've heard this year (but maybe that topic is for another thread).
Cut Copy is good, but it just takes me back to the 1980's too much I think. You might like Peter, Bjorn and John (Gimme Some). If you like trippy electronica, then check out Baths (Cerulean). Another one on the electronica front that's not bad is Gold Panda (Companion).
I have every Bright Eyes album except "The People's Key" - and I like every one - so that's good to hear.
I thought the same thing about Cut Copy. They're good, but their sound isn't anything new.
I do like Peter, Bjorn and John. I'll check out Baths and Gold Panda...
If you like Bright Eyes, you might like a band called Son, Ambulance. Those two bands actually share an album called "Oh Holy Fools" that's amazing. And Monsters of Folk includes Conor Oberst, along with some other well known musicians.
I'll definitely check those out as I've really been into Bright Eyes lately.
currently in my player is a Soundgarden CD but you should check out the Black Keys. I mostly listen to older stuff though. I get into some of the newer bands like Cage the Elephant but don't like most generic mainstream stuff. Call me boring :)
The new Kris Kross album is pretty solid.
Could say Muse, Eminem, and Coldplay - all who are headlining at Lollapalooza this year- but here are some that I've recently discovered:
Young the Giant - Alternative Rock. Pretty good.
Macklemore - Rapper from Seattle. Has some good stuff especially "My Oh My" and "Wings"
Mac Miller - 19 year old rapper on the rise from Pittsburgh
Young the Giant - Young the Giant
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Miike Snow - Miike Snow
Foo Fighters - Wasting Light
Brendan Benson - Lapalco
Lupe Fiasco - Lasers
Young the Giant (YTG) are actually personal friends of mine, and they are a fantastic young band. I grew up in Ann Arbor with their lead singer (yes, he's from Michigan), until his family moved to the OC. They're touring Europe right now, having just finished their first headline tour in the US. They're all from SoCal, and put off college to focus on the band. You've probably heard their single, My Body (its been used on FSD for a Pistons hype video), but their debut album has so much more. It's the perfect CD for driving on a sunny summer day with the windows down.
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is my favorite effort from Phoenix thus far. Think a non-stoner version of the Strokes with a bit more treble. It's one of the few albums where I like every song. Literally.
Miike Snow is also a debut effort, and is similar to Phoenix's new album. The two go together very well.
Brendan Benson is one of the guys in the Detroit rock group, the Raconteurs (famous for Steady As She Goes). He's from Royal Oak. The album is a great rock album with some fantastic tracks.
I really enjoyed listening to Lasers. It gets a bit too poltical at times for my taste, but Lupe is a master of intelligent raps melded with great beats. High quality production makes this a very easy album to listen to and enjoy.
I don't need to say anything about the Foo Fighters other than that critics are calling this their best album in a decade.
I've been a huge fan of Brendan Benson and Foo Fighters for years. I saw Foo Fighters several years ago in Toronoto, and I met Brendan Benson at the Magic Stick in Detroit several years ago. Good stuff.
I'll check out the other stuff.
Also liking them right now. Got a chance to hang with Payam (bass guitarist) last time they were in Grand Rapids. He is a good dude and really down to earth, just happy to be doing what they all like. I could see them getting bigger and often use the comparison to Kings of Leon when describing them. Glad to see others supporting them.
If you like more hard rock I am a huge fan of "Bullet for My Valentine" and "A Day to Remember".
I really started to get into A Day To Remember recently. Great stuff.
Sublime with Rome has a new single called "Panic" which is making waves on the west coast. Their new album drops July 12

I also like Dirty Heads album Any Port in a Storm. If you like the reggae rock stuff like me, the the bFoundations album "souvenirs and novelties" is top notch.
Tegan and Sara, Brand New, Midtown, Hank Williams Jr.
I find that following people on 8tracks.com is the best way to find new music for me. Some of these kids find some pretty great stuff. pseudochild is a kid from England who makes some cool mixes.
Bobby Fuller Four - Let Her Dance
Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks
Sleigh Bells - Rill Rill
Radical Face - Welcome Home
Ronald Jenkees. Different sound. Check out his YouTube videos too.
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes
Opeth

fuck yeah, how about some In Flames or Soulfly?
in flames is one of my favorite bands cant wait for their new album. have you ever listened to Acacia Strain they are some hardcore shit but JFC by them is great. and dont forget shadows fall
