OT What position do the Lions take in the NFL draft

Submitted by The Name on

I was looking over some mock NFL drafts, and saw that most had the Lions taking either an outside LB or a O lineman.

Not that I think Backus is great, but I kind of think the Lions are OK with their O-line. While Stafford's 18 injuries beg to differ, I think the Lions would be best served filling some gaps on the D.

A CB would be ideal, but I doubt the top two (Petterson, and guy whos last name I'm too lazy to look up from Nebraska) are still around.

My hope? Linebacker. Seems to have been a need for the Lions for as long as I can remember.

Either way what do some of my Lion brethern think?

They will take the best player that makes sense.  Will they take a QB or DT?  Probably not.  WR?  He'd have to be CJ great.

BTW - That's Mayhew's way.

Peterson from LSU is the guy you are thinking of at CB, but he is the #3 prospect by Scout, so he may not be around.

I also enjoy how you are too lazy to look at the front page of ESPN's draft section, but willing to make a forum post.

the 2nd best CB in the draft. I went down to mobile for a couple days thanks to my friend who happen to be an independent scout. I have had the pleasure meeting NFL personnel people and there's a feeling that Jimmy Smith will be a household name by the time draft starts.  The only reason why the media or fans seem to know about him is he plays for a shitty team, Colorado, and doesn't get the hype or exposure that Amukamara and Peterson get.

offensive line, offensive line, offensive line, offensive line. Seriously.

The Lions are a good offensive line away from having a very good and young team. They have negelected that position for years. First two rounds should be oline imhe. No skill players please. Linebacker wouldn't be the end of the world but if they picked a wr or rb htey are hopeless.

Gosder Cherilous is an awfully large man to omit, sir, and he was a recent 1st rounder.  We also got that top young guard Sims out of seattle last year.  I think plenty of attention has been made to the OL and plenty more is on the way, but you sound a bit like Millen with that strategy.

Without knowing who's available at the Lions projected pick, I'd definitely say offensive line.  They have their franchise QB, a great running back, a great receiver and not enough protection for Stafford.  Time to upgrade.  If you have that much money invested in skill players, it makes no sense to have a poor line that doesn't protect the QB well.

or is it trade up? hrmm

That or LB/OL would be nice. Our OL isn't amazing but it's not bad, rather they shore up defensive needs first.

Peterson will be gone by the time the Lions pick so he's likely out. Don't think w should be entertaining trading up. The kid from Nebraska may be there though. I think we need to go defense first followed by oline. Then, best player available at a position of need.

PROTECT THE INVESTMENT.

If the Lions take a CB, they better show some good O-linemen the money in free agency. Don't get me wrong--if we didn't have Matt Stafford, I would say defense all the way...but we do. Having three injured QBs in a season is an offensive (no pun intended, although lulz) line problem.

are top 10 in pass protection and they did it with a backup QB and 3rd string QB playing for most of the season.  It's not pass protection that is the problem. It's the run blocking that is more of a problem than pass protection.

From what I've been hearing, Cam Jordan was though to be a target but it's no longer realistic because he pretty much cemented himself as a top 10 pick with a great showing at Senior Bowl practices.  Jimmy Smith is probably the target for the Lions and he is creating a lot of buzz from the scouts.

Its hard to trade down, so must be easy to trade up...trade up and get the #1 or #2 CB on our boards. We need a shut down corner, we have a few "OK" corners that would be a fine for the #2 or #3 spot, we need the shutdown guy to solidify that secondary.  LB is light but from what i've read alot of solid youung talent comming up in Free Agensy this year we should be able to get a good crack at, and we can pick up a couple chance LBs in the 3rd and 4th round which mayhew has been very good at getting guys that will pan out.   OL while could use some help isn't a priority and we can pickup up some developmental OL in later rounds as well.  This team is honestly a healthy QB, CB and LB away from the playoffs. hell this year they were only really 2 plays away from going .500 (CJ catch against the bears, and stanton thowing that bonehead incompletion when he should of ran or just taken the sack)

First three rounds should be some combination of LB, OG, and CB (if I had to guess I'd say in that order simply because there won't be a great CB where we sit in round 1, and you can get a day-1 starter at guard in round 2).  After that, yeah, we probably could use another receiver and I think they'll take a good look at a late-round QB.

IMO, we still could use a few big name players defensively. I don't think we are at the level where we can be choosy. Why not just pick the best defensive player on the board?

The Lions have the 13th selection in the 1st round.  Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles used that pick to take Brandon Graham.  The biggest need is probably in the back seven on defense, but I'd be happy with any player as good as Brandon Graham.

My take..  Trade Calvin Johnson since everyone knows he wants out of Detroit.  Get more draft picks and select Julio Jones out of Alabama.  Fill up OL and defense with acquired picks.
