OT: what movie would actually be worth seeing with a live-performed soundtrack
I saw The Fellowship with an orchestra performing the soundtrack live, it was awesome.
LOTR would be my #1 choice with Braveheart being a close second.
How do I go about seeing hearing this?
You're going to need an orchestra though. The guy that wrote the score deserved an Oscar.
I love movies that utilize traditional orchestral soundtracks. And sleep. Which happens to be eluding me tonight.
Amadeus. Immortal Beloved. Rocky. Singles. Pulp Fiction.
And American Psycho.
Pulp Fiction -- interesting choice ... and a challenge for an orchestra, given the score of Pulp Fiction.
"I wanna dance, I wanna win, I want that trophy. So you better dance good." Cue the orchestra.
Tommy
If you can get AIR to play it live.
Star Wars. With John Williams conducting

Star Wars. Psycho. Jaws.
And, uh, yes please.
Easy. Judgement Night. For the few if you who may not know what this is, here:

That would work well.
Oh, hell yeah--Judgement Night has a killer soundtrack. Particularly loved the Sonic Youth/Cypress Hill pairing, with Sir Mix-a-Lot/Mudhoney as a close second. The soundtrack is better than the film, which is a good watch mostly for Dennis Leary's turn as a murderous but funny gangbanger (yeah, you read that right).
Here in the UK you can watch Gladiator with a live orchestra playing, meant to be very good but also expensive.
Maximum Overdrive.

Debbie Does Dallas?
I have the soundtrack at home and it always pumps me up.
2001: A Space Odyssey.
John Boorman's Excalibur would be second place for me.
Koyaanisqatsi would be fascinating. Phillip Glass is surprisingly difficult to perform, I understand.
I actually had the experience of seeing Koyasnisqatsi with a live orchestra at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor ~25 years ago. Amazing experience. The music was such an intergral part of the film.
2001: A Space Odyssey is the worst effing movie of all time

Also, any coming of age teen angst movie in the 80's.

Although I am not sure what is planned for the next iteration of the site (I don't remember hearing anything about drastic change or separation of forums like this), such a forum structure is definitely not supported by the current format and version of Drupal. I know there will be calls for this occasionally until we go back to non-OT mode (and we're going to experiment with better message distribution this time too), but for the time being, this particular question has been answered.
I like many of the OT subjects we have in the off-season.
The Nashville Symphony actually does this in the winter. So far, the list for this year looks like Jurassic Park, Home Alone, and Harry Potter

Alone [Одна] (Shostakovich)
As of 2010, it appears a full restored version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis exists with a restored film score by Gottfried Huppertz.
The rock version of Metropolis, with all the original artists.
The song remains the same.

LOTR.
Interstellar--love that organ!
Inception--feel the trombones!

Fuck yes - Interstellar. That score is incredible and bone chilling. Same with Inception. Nolan's films have fantastic scores.

Seconded on the Nolan films.

Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. In fact, I think any movie with an orchestral soundtrack would be great to see like that.

this.
2001: A Space Odyssey, It was probably 10 years ago but Michigan Theater had it as part of their summer classic movie series and a guy played the organ during the opening and that was really cool. I also think Last of the Mohicans would be good.

I saw this about three years ago with the NYPhil and it was pretty awesome

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Morricone directing the ochestra playing The Ecstacy of Gold is really fantastic.
Gives me chills. +1
the young lady singing had a great set of lungs.
But for a more sparse soundtrack, Dead Man in particular would be amazing to see. Neil Young kicked back in the third row with a guitar, casually improvising a soundtrack.
Interstella 555. Okay, I actually just want to see day punk live.
The dark knight
Superman, the original one.
