OT: What High School did you go to? And how were they in Sports?

Submitted by M-Wolverine on

I've seen some school trash talk going on in some threads over the last few weeks, and now that signing day is done, and it's things are slowing down again, I thought I'd see-

For those that want to reveal that much info about themselves, where did you go to school, was the Football team good? (Or great, if in a State other than Michigan that we'd recognize it). Who were your rivals? Any great memories? Or were you a basketball school? Or just not good at sports and such.

Me? Dearborn Fordson Tractors, great football, great tradition, winner for years and years, and origin of our newest preferred walk-on (Which is the thread this all got started for me...though I've seen more trash talk just recently). Only a handful of schools sport a better winning percentage, even fewer at the same level. Even less if you take the Catholic schools out of it (*cough*cough* recruiting*ahem*). But yeah, that's the limit of my smack talk.

How about you? What were you before you were a Michigan Man (or woman)?

and we were above average in most sports and awesome in basketball, football, volleyball, and baseball.

I didn't go to HS in my hometown because I played in the CHL through my HS years and lived away from home.

For the three years I was in HS we won the AAA provnicial championship (top level) in volleyball twice (I was starting power hitter all three years) and came in third my first year.

In baseball we won the provnicial championship once and came runner-up the other two years (I was the starting CF my last two years and starting catcher the first year).

In basketball we won the provincials my first year (which I was a bench warmer for) and made the playoffs my final two years (when I was first of the bench for one and starter for the other) but never made the finals.

Football I wasn't able to play because it interferred too much with hockey. The coach of the football team made us pick one or the other so I had to stick with hockey. We won the provincials once and were runner-up once. The third year we made the playoffs but got beat out in the first round.

While in the CHL our team was not the best. We were an expansion team (I was picked in their first year of existance) and we made the playoffs each year but only made it to the memorial cup once. We should have won that year but I played a bit of a role in our losing, sad to say.

I know this is out of order, but I'm at work.

I don't know what your sister's name is. I'm just saying, if she graduated in '08, then I may have taught her. My cooperating teacher was Daneen Mabley.

I wasn't trying to get you into trouble or anything. I just thought you had figured out my secret identity from my super secret MGoCodeName. I don't think my sister ever took Mabley.

Before they became Novi Catholic Central. Had a powerhouse football team. A couple state titles. Won the hockey title all 4 years I was there. Good times.

Didn't really produce many college level players though. I think one of the kickers went to Stanford and there was also Jason Gingell.

I graduated a number of years before Steve Breaston and Ryan Mundy attended.

I went to school there when Jason Taylor played. I never saw him, though, since he was home-schooled and I never watched a game.

Walled Lake Central Vikings! We weren't very good at sports. I swam while I was there, and we were somewhat decent. Not too many claims to fame except for C list actor Dax Sheppard and current wolverine rap star Jack Kennedy!

Batavia High School in IL. State runners up in football. Good basketball. Good baseball. Home of basketball hall of famer Dan Issel and super bowl MVP Ken Anderson.

I'm from Mike Folk's Pewamo-Westphalia High School.

Multiple State Championships in Competitive Cheer. Runners-up to John Garavaglia's (sp? - Future Sparty) team in bball in 89. Small school, but a good pipeline to UM - not a sports pipeline though.

Go Pirates!

Your avatar is strikingly appropriate. Nice choice.

I think the track titles were after my time, but thanks for adding. I guess it helps to finally have a track for the team to train on.

When did you matriculate your way through? I left for UM in 97.

so currently I'm a proud U-M sophomore.

This year there is a P-W hurdler/sprinter that is the best at the 110 hurdles in the Lansing area and is being recruited to come here for track...shocking, I know.

That cheer is famous-ish, there are people from schools that have no reason to recognize it, but they do.

I'm still a little bitter that they changed from the UM football uniforms and helmets to the bastardized version of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers uniforms/helmets. I guess it makes sense seeing that we're the Pirates and all, but still.

Thanks for the info on the track athlete. Looks like we're building that athletic pipeline after all.

Good luck with school. To this day, one of the best 4-6 year stretches of my life (Good thing my wife doesn't read this blog)!

Laingsburg alum and fellow CMAC alum here... Going to the Bucs helmets was real bad and your football field always smells of cow shit. Cant say we had much success against you guys in football when I played 01-03 but our schools have developed a bit of a rivalry in basketball over the past 15 years or so that is fun to watch. Glad to see some CMAC guys on here tho.

Denver has the thin air, Oregon has the crowned field, PW has the cow shit smell. What can I say? It seems to work though.

I have noticed the nice rivalry with the Burg in BBall. Although, unless I'm way out of the loop which is entirely possible, our main rival in all sports is still Fowler. I guess you can be our MSU to Folwer's OSU in basketball at least.

CMAC - a collection of small-ish schools, but tough as nails all. Can't believe the conference spans from Saranac to Dansville now, but whatever. I don't have to ride the buses.

Greenwood High School in Greenwood, South Carolina for my first two years and now the Governor's School (SM) for my junior and senior years

A local powerhouse in football the last ten years; three state titles, the last one in '06. Basketball and Baseball were okay. Winning seasons and all that, but not particularly spectacular. The soccer team was decent; I played keeper for the JV team my freshman and sophmore years, and we barely had a .500 record those years.

Notable Alums, particularly football players:

Kelcy Quarles, USC defensive tackle
Sam Montgomery, LSU defensive end

And sadly, Quarterback of the Appalachian State Mountaineers back in '07, Armanti Edwards.

DHS '03
terrible at football, terrible at basketball, really good at cross country when i was there, and apparently our band was pretty impressive.
embarrassing for the football stands to empty after the halftime show though.

Hemlock High School (1991).

We were pretty good at hoops and baseball.  State semi-finals in baseball my senior year (class c?).

Football not so much.  Seemed like we could beat the teams we were supposed to lose to and lose to the teams we were supposed to beat.
