OT: What have you gotten for free ala Jameis Winston?

Submitted by Go Blue Eyes on

While the debate rages as to what Jameis Winston (and other college athletes) got or didn't get for free, it got me to thinking what I have gotten free on a regular basis that ordinary people just don't.

Perhaps the best thing I ever got for free on a regular basis was free gas for almost a year when I worked in Carlsbad, California in the late 80's.  I knew the guy who worked the payment station, would pull up and wave to him, pumped the gas and then simply drove off.  It was pretty cool not to have to worry about gas prices for a long time.

Just curious to see what others have gotten in their past or present that would qualify as "preferential treatment."

Used to drink for next to nothing with my roommate about 12 or so years ago. We used to frequent the local dive bar (great food) and were friends with all the girls working there. We'd get one draft beer which turned into an endless glass and then eat and usually all our bill would have would be the two beers. But we did tip significantly.

Some friends of mine and I had this going at the bar across from our old office. So many Friday happy hours turned into late nights at Denny's, and we'd get charged for about one out of every 5 drinks (like you, we tipped heavily).

That bar doesn't exist anymore, probably due to equal parts free drinks and a 3000 person office moving 30 miles away.

It costs a heavy fucking fee, and if you don't throw buck-o-five who will? Ooooooohhh buck-o-five, freedom costs a buck-o-five, yeah My friend Matt is head of marketing at Bell's brewery, he always shows up with free stuff, though he did go to b school at state.

My Dad gave me an old used car of his when I turned 16.  A la Jameis, one time my girlfriend and I were going to a movie, but when I asked for two tickets I realized I had left my wallet at home.  I was really embarrassed, but the clerk sort of looked around for a manager and slipped me two tickets.  It was awesome.

Sweetwaters Doughnuts
They are open 24 hours and in HS I would always swing through the drive through on the way to my friends house so we would have something for the "munchies" later on. I became a regular with the late night crew and eventually got hooked up with boxes full of day old doughnuts literally every night. Good times, good times...

Booze and food in college.  I had a buddy that worked at a Gumby's Pizza that was across the street from my house.  We used to just go open the place up at 4am and start making pies.

I'm not judging you, but I'm not sure why you felt like this was right place to share that piece of highly personal info.

FYI I think we're just talking about things you got for free - e.g. food, gas, etc. -  not necessarily sharing every terrible decision that you somehow got away with without ruining your life.

P.S. I lied, I am judging you.

Ann Arbor in the early 1990s

- Mitch's: Food, beer (after the first pitcher), head

- Ashley's: every second or third beer

DC in the late 1990s

- Capitol City Brewing Company: every beer other than the first

- Black Cat: refills on vodka

Lately, not so much other than an occasional round, but I don't date waitresses or hang out with bartenders much these days.
