You know, everyone likes to jump on certain players (i.e. Crosby) for whining.  Yet, every single game day thread is littered with "OMG REFS SCREWED US!!!  CONSPIRACY!!!"

Every team feels that they're getting screwed.  Sometimes, the refs make mistakes.  Personally, I'd like to see them be held more accountable.  But lets stop pretending that Gary Bettman is picking and choosing teams he wants to win.  And in that regard, why would he want the Sharks who have a measly following instead of the Red Wings who can draw viewers coast to coast?

Fuck this shit in its fucking face let's see what fucking happens when we don't have 9850198 less PP opportunities.

Rationalizing is fun!  If we win, then the refs did an adequate job...maybe made a few mistakes, but nothing major.  If we lose, the refs screwed us.  There were calls against the Sharks that had me scratching my head too (i.e. goalie intereference at the end of the game when he as crosscheck by a red wings player into Howard).  The Sharks capitalized, the Red Wings didn't.

Yeah I watched the game.  There were bad calls.  I wish the refs were held more accountable.  I said that previously in this thread.  But over a 7 game playoff series, things tend to even out.  Don't pretend the Wings have never been the beneficiary of questionable calls.

The Wings need to play better.  They're very professional and won't worry about the refs.  They'll play their game, and hopefully capitalize on some chances.  They're not going to whine, and while we're both probably frustrated, we should rein in the conspiracy mantra.

Babcock after the game:

"The reality is that you can't have momentum if only half your players can get on the ice because they are sitting in the penalty box all night long," Babcock said.

Despite what you seem to think there were an inordinate amount of calls go against us and yes, the team did take notice.  I am not saying that there is any kind of conspiracy because I don't believe that.  There were a lot of calls go against that were questionable and it made it tough to over come.

Do me a favor and tell me all of the calls that the Wings have benefitted from.  There hasn't been one going back all the way through last year's Cup Finals.  I'm still waiting for all of these terrible calls to "even out".  Hell I'm waiting for a single fucking call to go our way.  We have about fifteen whoppers coming our way for everything to even out.  Starting with two goals that need to be waived off because of premature whistles.  Add on top of that, getting six men on the ice for thirty seconds, a couple of badly blown offsides, and numerous dives leading to five-on-three situations.  One of those five-on-threes should come when a Red Wings player cuts a Sharks player and the Sharks player gets a tripping call.

If you're admitting that (a) the refs did a shitty job both ways, and (b) the Wings had way more calls go against them, why can't we make the leap to (c) the the refs' general shittiness put them in a terrible position vis-a-vis the Sharks?

Hockey is like any other game in that you have to outplay your opponents to win. You have to take advantage of opportunitites. Hockey is unlike any other game in that the officials call penalties that DIRECTLY lead to increased scoring chances. When the officiating is bad, or slanted one way, it fucking shows guy. There is no conspiracy involving Gary Bettman, or Sidney Crosby or any Red Wing hater. But if you honestly believe the Sharks victory tonight wasn't heavily influenced by poor officiating, then you're an asshole.

There have been games where the Wings get calls they don't deserve. But watching Playoff hockey, the most beautiful thing in sports IME, impeded by bad officiating is very disheartening when it's your team on the wrong end. Everyone cussing up this thread and acting silly is justified.

That part where Pitt got to play nearly a full minute with too many men on the ice, at the end of which the ref just skated up to a Pitt player & motioned for him to go to the bench (instead of, you know, calling the damn penalty!) is one of the most memorable officiating moments of my life.  Also, that's when I ordered my tinfoil hat.

I love how the legend of the too many men on the ice call continues to expand.  The approximately twenty seconds that it was has now magically morphed into nearly a full minute.  Now, that said, the fact that it wasn't called is inexcusable.  I was merely commenting on how people tend to really over-exaggerate sometimes.  I do agree with almost everyone here, though.  The officiating this year has been AWFUL league-wide.

Even if the Wings pulled this game out, I'd still be angry with how one sided it was called. Of the 10 calls against the Wings, at LEAST 5 of them were dives by San Jose, in which the EXACT SAME FUCKING THINGS were not being called the other way. That was not playoff hockey. That was absolute trash. The Phoenix series was called evenly. This is just a complete joke.

I mean, WTF????  That's one full f'ing period on the power play.  These refs are a joke.  The diving Sharks - they're worse than any team I've ever seen.  They must be the only team in the NHL that doesn't have a player with a nut sack!  Man up you friggin pansies and stop diving all over the ice!!!  And I hope Babcock and the Wings players say what a joke this was and Illitch pays the fine.  This is atrocious!!

Fuck those fucking refs. What a complete bullshit job by them and I hope Babcock lights into them after this game. If I was him, I would be busy trying to get my foot out of their ass right now. He must be a very patient man. The NHL has been ridiculous this season with these jokes they clowns they call refs. Absolutely bullshit.

I rarely complain about penalties in any sport.

However, tonight was a fucking abomination. You'd think the NHL would have reviewed some of the questionable moments from game 1 (for example, the dive on the penalty on Franzen). But it was EVEN WORSE tonight. There is no excuse for this.

The refs were bullied by the whiny fucking fanbase, the whiny fucking players, and the whiny fucking coaching staff of San Jose. At certain points, the Sharks weren't even playing the puck.. they were dropping their sticks, diving to the ice, falling during scrums, and OPENLY BEGGING for calls. This shit never used to fly in the NHL.

The NHL had better hear an earful about this, and the Wings had better get a fair shake at the Joe.

Is that San Jose can't win at the Joe.  It's a mental block with them and if we don't get a huge edge in officiating at home, I say let a tiger loose on the ice to eat some zebras!

Funnily enough despite the ridiculously one sided officiating, the two very worst calls were both against the Sharks.  The boarding call at the end of the first was an embarrassment and if it weren't for the Franzen getting two minutes for being high sticked incident from game one, the goalie interference call at the end would have been the worst call of the entire playoffs.
