Let's go wings!!!
OT: Western Conference Semis: Wings vs. Sharks Game 2
60 minutes, I feel that they will do fine. If there is another letdown like early in Game 1, well it might be a short series.
There is no doubt in my mind this is going to the Wings. 2 days off and plenty of motivation. I say 5-2 Wings.
Depends on how Howard plays. I think he'll play well and we win, but it's far from a certainty.
are a joke, they choke in the playoffs every year, hopefully the wings can dominate tonight.
Eaves out with an elbow injury, Williams in. Howard needs to have his A game today. Go Wings.
Wings will win the series if they win this game. Nabokov has played relatively well in the playoffs so far, but he's a choker and won't keep it up.
I seriously think you guys are setting everything up for a mass jinx with all the Sharks=chokers talk. Let's keep that stuff quiet until after the series.
stupid PP led to heroic PK but i think the second period might be more telling as to who will win this than the first
has been inconsistent these playoffs, however, it seems like he's brought one of his A games tonight. knock on wood.
highly doubt anyone in San Jose will be naming their kid Pavel any time soon
1-0 Wins via Datsyuk wrister from just past the blue line
Anyone else see Helm go down looking hurt after hitting someone?
edit: nevermind he is back on the ice
....becoming a common theme in this series already. Another common theme is that the penalties have been unwarranted.
Since I know I have on red wings goggles, I try not to complain about the calls. But I have to say that there have been some pretty soft penalties. The 2 minute minor to Franzen for getting hit in the face with a stick in game 1 comes to mind.
Both penalties that led to the GW 5 on 3 goal were questionable calls.

We don't need no stinkin' defense.

on a more serious note, it looks like neither team is really interested in playing solid D tonight. 2 -- 2 with 4 minutes left in the first? WTF?
Daysuk just walked right in and almost scored; two seconds later the puck is being fired at Howard.
breathe, breathe. okay now go get another beer. remember work is overated anyway.
Another SJ dive, another SJ power play goal.
Welcome to the new NHL.
has to be a point of contact in order for the penalty to be called - not saying they're not diving and the Wings aren't getting hosed. but they have to play smarter and adapt or else they'll be facing this shit allllllll series. they wised up game 5 in the phoenix series.
about to have a big house 500th size meltdown.
Whaddya know....a legitimate goal by San Jose.
Whether it's hockey or football, you're always the first to jump off the cliff. Get a damn grip; there's still a LOT of hockey to be played.
I could do without all of this "they have to score on this pp" crap. More than 2 periods left, down by 1. It is not a make or break pp.
I said the same thing to myself. One would think they'd get a handle on how to announce hockey after having their NHL broadcast rights for this long, but apparently not...
He is the main culprit. I could do without this guy.
inaccurate but ok.
was an awesome save. I thought we were going down 3-1 for sure.
jesus howard is playing out of his mind.
fucking dogshit penalties.
and i really hate versus coverage.
holy shit a wings on the PP
A Shark in the box?
slashing at 8:30
These announcers, or at least the side commentary, is so pro San Jose it is sick. Plus, the guy just said a goal was "sassy." Sassy? come on
Yeah, tied up!
Tomas Holmstrom= the most underappreciated Wing ever. He's been screening goalies since 1732
I like him in front of the goal. But when he handles the puck he looks like he is choppin wood.
As long as he gets it to a teammate, it doesn't have to look pretty.
Could we win just ONE face-off, fellas?! Just one?!
We need to win some draws, look for break-outs, and spend some more time down on their end in the second period.
Pavel and Jimmy have saved our asses thus far.
make a note: do not touch setoguchi. he will do everything he can to get a penalty call.
That seems to be San Jose's gameplan: take a dive, shoot the ref a dirty look, skate down the ice with indignation in an attempt to earn boos from the crowd, and repeat until you have a power play.
I fucking hate this strategy and hate their fans for creating such a whiny atmosphere. This ain't hockey. Leave the begging to NFL wide receivers.
How are the Wings looking?
not great. but good. the passing has lapsed back into how it looked for a lot of games in the Phoenix series and they haven't thrown bodies around like they have. ridiculous number of PKs contributes to some of this but they're not playing 140x better because of the rest like some hoped. san jose doesn't exactly look mindblowing but, well, a pessimistic assessment is often better than a sunshine blowing one.
what would hockey be like if gordon bombay hadn't blown a .08
and yes i'm referencing the youtube video
with a 1:14 4-on-4
I'm sorry if it seems like I'm just complaining but I cannot stand this announcer. When the wings get a soft penalty no big deal but now all he is talking about is the "apparent" boarding. Come on man, YOU ARE TERRIBLE.
The target of my contempt for the night. So far.....
Lidstrom scores off the post!
Yippee. Way to go Nick
"saucy little glove grab" made me lol
i do not KNOW much about hockey, i grew up watching, but admittedly only really tune in for the playoffs and the real "nuts and bolts" working of the game escapes me. so, can someone help me out in understanding why many red wings playoffs games i have seen over the past few years have the shot total going something like 45 to 20 but the wings will more often than not lose.
are "shots" not important? is this just how the wings play? is detroit's defense that much better? what stat should i look at in a box score scenario to see how the game was played?
Not expert, but my opinion is that not all shots are created equal. It's probably better to look at scoring chances. A one-timer from the slot is significantly more dangerous than an unscreened shot from the blueline.
Shots are often a decent measure of puck possesion. Lots of possession = lots of shots.
but they've been, at their core, a team whose goal tending has been beaten by blue line wristers classically. you will see a RW goalie absolutely destroy a great shot on a break away and then just absolutely fuck up a "dump-in" wrister from 30 feet out and it will be the game decider
cue the San Jose Powerplay
what is with all the penalties on us. I believe Bettman has established a conspiracy to keep us out of the finals cuz we are to kick ass.
Detroit : kick ass
white : rice
what a horseshit penalty.
San Jose's goalie was screamed at for not being a "team player" and getting in on the core diving principles the Sharks had been practicing
after that penalty he yelled to the bench "how's that?"
So drawing one penalty in the 1st wasn't enough?
nein nein nein nein nein nein nein nein nein nein nein nein nein nein nein
shows the Sharks player in front of the ref cross check and punch the Wings player in the back of the head as he skates away. no call. lulz
my god do the mets suck. guy gave up a walk which forced in a run. then he gave up a grand slam home run. then he had Polanco double. then he gave up a home run.
mind you, these are consecutive at bats.
went from 5-3 Mets to 10-5 Phillies in 4 at bats.
Santana is one of the best pitchers in the game and that was his worst inning and outing as a professional.
But the statement stands...
He just kept referring to him as "the guy" as if he was a bum or something. Just a shitty outing that's all.
+1 for not being able to hear the hockey announcers
-1 for knowing who's pitching for the Mets
+1 for me not caring who's pitching for the Mets
stupid. Stuart helps San Jose crash the net and gets 2 in the box
I think San Jose took offseason lessons at the Ginobili/Varejao/Forsberg school for flopping and diving.
Vlade Divac just started a slow clap.
I think any thoughts on the Wings demise has been quite exaggerated, they had the Sharks on the ropes at the end of the period, LET'S GO RED WINGS!!!
In the regular season, Detroit took 298 minor penalties (3rd). San Jose took 374 (24th).
In this series it's Detroit 13, San Jose 9.
Standard caveats about insignificant sample size, but what the hell?
problem with this, is that Zetterberg should be 1-13 (# of times he's been in the playoffs) and the rest should follow.
Sidney Crosby for that full beard he grows every year... you know, the one that says, "Hey, Chris Hansen! Yeah, I'm over here! Bring your cameras!"
Despite the ludicrous officiating, that was a great period.
The end of the period (after the final penalty kill) was especially heartening. Dats, Rafalski, Lidstrom, and company really camped out and went to work in their zone. Pure Red Wings possession hockey.
If we can keep that mojo in period three, we can steal home ice!
Hockey game threads just aren't the same without emery cat commercials.
Bertuzzi drives the net lodged with Pavelski, bumps Nabokov, Nabokov throws himself into his net = Detroit penalty.
Dan Boyle tries out for the Cal Bears by tackling Holmstrom in front of the net (with the puck nowhere in the vicinity, mind you) = crickets.
I just can't wait for this series to get to the Joe. The Sharks have been the beneficiaries of extreme home-ice advantage... If we can take this one, we stand a great chance of going up 3-1 in Detroit.
that last PK in the 2nd period was the best the Wings have had in the playoffs thus far. great push in the current momentum shift
Good pressure by the Wings to start the 3rd. And *gasp* a Sharks penalty!
that the wings can take a penalty to negate their powerplay, but the sharks can't to go down two men?
WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT ARE YOU KIDDING ME
I'm getting out the tin foil hat. Jesus Christ.
insert obligatory sharks 2 man advantage.
Shit, it's going to be tough to kill off this 8 on 3
DIVES OUT THE ASS
this shit is so fucked.
BULL FUCKING SHIT
12:17 - DET - Kris Draper: Excessive Bearding
14:09 - DET - Kick Lidstrom: Speeding
17:33 - DET - Jimmy Howard: Interfering with a shot on goal
3:01 - DET - Pavel Datsyuk: You know what you did
Fuck their incompetence. From the commisioner to the minor league officials. Fuck them all.
"I'M TOO OLD FOR THIS SHIT"
"GET IN THE PENALTY BOX!" "NO YOU GET IN THE PENALTY BOX"
"YOU SLASHED MY WIFE? DID YOU SLASH MY WIFE"
"Detroit... I love you!" *BUILDING EXPLODES*
COMING IN JUNE
fuck these refs in their fucking faces this shit is so fucking frustrating
commence melt down
to see them destroy pavelski. that wasnt enough...
Looked like turtle
Odds on wings penalty in the next 30 sec?
refs are doing a horrible job...and so is versus...i got a commercial in the middle of our power play and they have some gutter chick doing the intermissions.
she looks like she's struggling to kick a crystal meth habit.
i mean come on just look at the chicks hair...she looks like she just got done with a gang bang
everything that could go wrong has. i am so pissed!!!!!! damn sharks really don't deserve this game.
string of profanities possibly worthy of upvoting but possibly offensive to others
you can bet mickey redmond was screaming at that play.
Right now the Sharks have had 8 power plays whereas the Red Wings have only had 3. Not to put this straight to conspiracy as a few or the Wing's penalties weren't total B.S., but I think that Gary Bettman has an influence on who wins each playoff series. He wants the most marketable team to win and he really hates the Wings. I mean c'mon... during the regular season the Wings were the 2nd least penalized team whereas the Sharks were the 7th MOST. Does anyone else find that 8 powerplays to 3 is a little uncanny seeing that statistic? Or am I just whining? Fuck
If you don't believe me.
FUCK YOU. ALL CAPS=RAAAAAAAGEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!
what a complete fucking joke
THIS IS RIDICULOUS.
holy shit a call on them
for that make-up call
You're kidding me - that wasn't a tripping call on Howard?
screaming with indignity about the call? SRSLY!?!? the refs have served you 2 games on a platter, STFU!!!!!!!!
Who else is watching on Justin.tv? Last game i watched on there was Michigan-Miami, this looks exactly the same! Refs are fucking awful
fucking announcers - "the ice crimes have been questionable tonight"
yeah, only when the sharks get penalized.
fuck you, i hate you and i hope you choke on a bag of dicks.
You know, everyone likes to jump on certain players (i.e. Crosby) for whining. Yet, every single game day thread is littered with "OMG REFS SCREWED US!!! CONSPIRACY!!!"
Every team feels that they're getting screwed. Sometimes, the refs make mistakes. Personally, I'd like to see them be held more accountable. But lets stop pretending that Gary Bettman is picking and choosing teams he wants to win. And in that regard, why would he want the Sharks who have a measly following instead of the Red Wings who can draw viewers coast to coast?
You're really Gary Bettman, and you're just trying to deflect suspicion. I'm on to you...
THIS GUY'S A PHONY!!!
/Adjusts tin foil hat
if we lose, it's still the sharks and they'll probably find some hilarious way to lose the series
This shit is over.
When was the last time the Wings came back down 0-2?
to lead the charge again. that was one of the greatest performances I have seen as a fan.
Fuck this shit in its fucking face let's see what fucking happens when we don't have 9850198 less PP opportunities.
note to self buy vaseline
for wasting 3hrs of my life. what a shame too, great sport ruined by complete officiating ineptitude.
Rationalizing is fun! If we win, then the refs did an adequate job...maybe made a few mistakes, but nothing major. If we lose, the refs screwed us. There were calls against the Sharks that had me scratching my head too (i.e. goalie intereference at the end of the game when he as crosscheck by a red wings player into Howard). The Sharks capitalized, the Red Wings didn't.
Did you watch the right game?
Yeah I watched the game. There were bad calls. I wish the refs were held more accountable. I said that previously in this thread. But over a 7 game playoff series, things tend to even out. Don't pretend the Wings have never been the beneficiary of questionable calls.
The Wings need to play better. They're very professional and won't worry about the refs. They'll play their game, and hopefully capitalize on some chances. They're not going to whine, and while we're both probably frustrated, we should rein in the conspiracy mantra.
and go by the name of Troll?
Babcock after the game:
"The reality is that you can't have momentum if only half your players can get on the ice because they are sitting in the penalty box all night long," Babcock said.
Despite what you seem to think there were an inordinate amount of calls go against us and yes, the team did take notice. I am not saying that there is any kind of conspiracy because I don't believe that. There were a lot of calls go against that were questionable and it made it tough to over come.
Do me a favor and tell me all of the calls that the Wings have benefitted from. There hasn't been one going back all the way through last year's Cup Finals. I'm still waiting for all of these terrible calls to "even out". Hell I'm waiting for a single fucking call to go our way. We have about fifteen whoppers coming our way for everything to even out. Starting with two goals that need to be waived off because of premature whistles. Add on top of that, getting six men on the ice for thirty seconds, a couple of badly blown offsides, and numerous dives leading to five-on-three situations. One of those five-on-threes should come when a Red Wings player cuts a Sharks player and the Sharks player gets a tripping call.
did you notice them? 5 on 3 in the third in back to back games?
If you're admitting that (a) the refs did a shitty job both ways, and (b) the Wings had way more calls go against them, why can't we make the leap to (c) the the refs' general shittiness put them in a terrible position vis-a-vis the Sharks?
Hockey is like any other game in that you have to outplay your opponents to win. You have to take advantage of opportunitites. Hockey is unlike any other game in that the officials call penalties that DIRECTLY lead to increased scoring chances. When the officiating is bad, or slanted one way, it fucking shows guy. There is no conspiracy involving Gary Bettman, or Sidney Crosby or any Red Wing hater. But if you honestly believe the Sharks victory tonight wasn't heavily influenced by poor officiating, then you're an asshole.
[End Mother Fucking Rant.]
All in all, I agree. But don't pretend the roles have never been reversed. I guess that's all I'm saying.
There have been games where the Wings get calls they don't deserve. But watching Playoff hockey, the most beautiful thing in sports IME, impeded by bad officiating is very disheartening when it's your team on the wrong end. Everyone cussing up this thread and acting silly is justified.
You're right.....I mean, come on guys. Remember the Cup Finals last year against Pittsburgh when we were getting every call? REMEMBER? AMIRITE?
That part where Pitt got to play nearly a full minute with too many men on the ice, at the end of which the ref just skated up to a Pitt player & motioned for him to go to the bench (instead of, you know, calling the damn penalty!) is one of the most memorable officiating moments of my life. Also, that's when I ordered my tinfoil hat.
I love how the legend of the too many men on the ice call continues to expand. The approximately twenty seconds that it was has now magically morphed into nearly a full minute. Now, that said, the fact that it wasn't called is inexcusable. I was merely commenting on how people tend to really over-exaggerate sometimes. I do agree with almost everyone here, though. The officiating this year has been AWFUL league-wide.
Even if the Wings pulled this game out, I'd still be angry with how one sided it was called. Of the 10 calls against the Wings, at LEAST 5 of them were dives by San Jose, in which the EXACT SAME FUCKING THINGS were not being called the other way. That was not playoff hockey. That was absolute trash. The Phoenix series was called evenly. This is just a complete joke.
[email protected] Send your hate mail there.
I mean, WTF???? That's one full f'ing period on the power play. These refs are a joke. The diving Sharks - they're worse than any team I've ever seen. They must be the only team in the NHL that doesn't have a player with a nut sack! Man up you friggin pansies and stop diving all over the ice!!! And I hope Babcock and the Wings players say what a joke this was and Illitch pays the fine. This is atrocious!!
While agree in part, the Wings have to adjust. they have to understand that cross checking a guy without the puck into the side of the net is going to result in a penalty. And hey, start diving, it works for the Sharks.
So do you guys think San Jose can go far in the World Cup? Their tryout tonight was pretty impressive.
San Jose vs. Brazil in the final, IMO.
I ll take brazil over San Jose in the final, San Jose trying to draw a penalty against Brazil will take a dive in their own box which the ref does not call because he has half a brain, which will lead to brazil scoring the wining goal in the 83rd minute.
I rarely complain about penalties in any sport.
However, tonight was a fucking abomination. You'd think the NHL would have reviewed some of the questionable moments from game 1 (for example, the dive on the penalty on Franzen). But it was EVEN WORSE tonight. There is no excuse for this.
The refs were bullied by the whiny fucking fanbase, the whiny fucking players, and the whiny fucking coaching staff of San Jose. At certain points, the Sharks weren't even playing the puck.. they were dropping their sticks, diving to the ice, falling during scrums, and OPENLY BEGGING for calls. This shit never used to fly in the NHL.
The NHL had better hear an earful about this, and the Wings had better get a fair shake at the Joe.
Is that San Jose can't win at the Joe. It's a mental block with them and if we don't get a huge edge in officiating at home, I say let a tiger loose on the ice to eat some zebras!
Funnily enough despite the ridiculously one sided officiating, the two very worst calls were both against the Sharks. The boarding call at the end of the first was an embarrassment and if it weren't for the Franzen getting two minutes for being high sticked incident from game one, the goalie interference call at the end would have been the worst call of the entire playoffs.
All I have to say is this : Dany Heatley belongs in jail, not on the ice playing for an NHL team.
I'm pretty pissed, but what makes you say that?
Killed someone while driving recklessly, as I recall. Got him run out of Atlanta.
Had a good friend's father do that. He is set to get out in a year or so I think. Too bad for him he doesn't ice skate, I guess.
He killed his teammate in 2003 when he was speeding and crashed
wreckless driver where a Thrasher prospect was killed. received PROBATION. had been drinking even.
That makes me wonder about the difference of him and Bertuzzi. Certainly Bertuzzi had intent to harm, and Moore's injury was bad, but shoving a man down and hurting him is not as villaneous as killing a man because you drive like an idiot, IME.
Not defending him, but the victim's parents had a lot of say in what his sentence was. They were actually very supportive of him. He was also under the legal limit from what I remember and that played a role in his punishment.
Tonight's game was bull shit. The penalties that I saw were some of the most ridiculous calls I've ever seen in a playoff game. It almost felt like even if we so much as touched them we received a 2 min minor. Soft calls, shitty calls and blindness by the refs made this game a disgrace to watch. With that being said getting those two pp goals were big and it really gave us a boost because soon after we started to really put pressure on and found it much easier setting up our fore checking. The calls ruined the game and it got to the point where it exceeded beyond out of control. Detroit must win games 3 and 4 now at home. If you want to send San Jose a message right now its simple. Hit harder, score often and frustrate the hell out of Pavelski, Thorton, Marleau and Nabakov. Scoring early and often and maintaining the pressure will win us both at home. Have faith fellow Wings it isn't over yet. Lick your wounds and bruises because we have the home ice on Tuesday.
