OT: VT coach takes break during 1-point game to coach fan

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Just saw this on ESPN.

Virginia Tech head coach and former Marquette coach Buzz Williams took a break during a TV timeout when he could be coaching his team while they were down one point in the second half so he could coach a fan shooting free throws as part of a promotional type deal.

Virginia Tech wound up losing by 10.

In other news, Coach K takes break during ACC Tourney game to get a Snickers at the vending machines.

There was a timeout with his team trailing Miami by a point with just more than 10 minutes left in the game. During the timeout, two fans were brought on to the court for a $500 free-throw contest at either end. While his team was huddled and the Hokies’ season hung in the balance, Williams was AWOL.

He was standing next to the girl shooting foul shots.

“Make it!” he yelled at her, from about two feet away.

She missed it.

“Make it!” he yelled again.

She missed again.

And missed the next as well.

After she was 0-for-3, Williams finally ducked into the huddle.

He already is to some degree, especially since his team lost and isn’t doing too well overall for the year. I didn't know what he was saying, but it looked all right at first. He just stood next to her too long and should’ve went back to his team’s huddle a lot sooner.

Not good. If it was beilen or harbaugh I'd be livid. These guys aren't paid millions of dollars a year to do these things during games. The coaches who win the most are the ones that are all business for 40/60 minutes.

Such a non-story. You can see his assistants drawing up something on the white board during the 5 seconds he yelled at the girl. Coaches generally spend the first portion of the timeouts talking amongst themselves before sitting down with the team anyway. In the NBA they will spend practically half the TO huddled and chatting away from the players. This is so ridiculous...

Williams was a good story at Marquette for a while but sort of lost it. Got too full of himself and hasn't shown much recently. This wasn't cute at all. If he was trying to show how cool he is he would have given the shooter a hug or high five signaling "nice try". None of that. I vote that itnwas a dick move and made him look like a dick

I thought it meant he went to the end of the bench and started talking to a physical fan (like the object) so the video was a bit disappointing

at MDen shopping for the latest in uniformz, WD, I'm gonna yell at you:

Buy it!

Buy it!

Buy it!

...until you're so distracted that you fail in your attempt (like the girl did after the "coaching" she got).

I don't go to games to watch random people shoot free throws. I go to watch my team win. I agree with some others that it's not much in and of itself, but it looks horrible. Also, if you see an employee slack off once, do you think that's the only time he's ever done it? If someone told Harbaugh to do this during a game, I bet he'd go off on them.
