OT: VT coach takes break during 1-point game to coach fan
Just saw this on ESPN.
Virginia Tech head coach and former Marquette coach Buzz Williams took a break during a TV timeout when he could be coaching his team while they were down one point in the second half so he could coach a fan shooting free throws as part of a promotional type deal.
Virginia Tech wound up losing by 10.
In other news, Coach K takes break during ACC Tourney game to get a Snickers at the vending machines.
There was a timeout with his team trailing Miami by a point with just more than 10 minutes left in the game. During the timeout, two fans were brought on to the court for a $500 free-throw contest at either end. While his team was huddled and the Hokies’ season hung in the balance, Williams was AWOL.
He was standing next to the girl shooting foul shots.
“Make it!” he yelled at her, from about two feet away.
She missed it.
“Make it!” he yelled again.
She missed again.
And missed the next as well.
After she was 0-for-3, Williams finally ducked into the huddle.
He could really end up getting hammered for this in the media.
He should have just thrown footballs at the poor girl with an enthusiasm unknown to man.
“Make it!” he yelled at her, from about two feet away. She missed it.
“Make it!” he yelled again.
She missed again.

It's actually pretty good coaching. I don't know why Beilein doesn't yell "make it" when someone shoots a three pointer.
Like any good coach, Beilein delegates that task. Win the Game!!!
I'm not sure yelling "make it!" from two feet away really constitutes "coaching".
How to Half-Ass Your Job, by Buzz Williams
Such a non-story. You can see his assistants drawing up something on the white board during the 5 seconds he yelled at the girl. Coaches generally spend the first portion of the timeouts talking amongst themselves before sitting down with the team anyway. In the NBA they will spend practically half the TO huddled and chatting away from the players. This is so ridiculous...

Sorta. While it likely didn't have any real impact in the game, perception is extremely important as a head coach. This didn't look good.
Certainly gives the impression that he doesn't care about the outcome of the game which was the last game of the season if they didn't win. Definitely gives off a 'threw in the towel' vibe
Yeah, no wonder his team sucks, if their coach is just yelling make it all the time.
when did miami go on some sort of run to widen the lead? did va tech go cold after the time out? anything of substance to fuel the unecessary fire?
at MDen shopping for the latest in uniformz, WD, I'm gonna yell at you:
Buy it!
Buy it!
Buy it!
...until you're so distracted that you fail in your attempt (like the girl did after the "coaching" she got).
VT supposedly has a good class by their standards coming in. If I were advising the fanbase, I'd suggest letting it go.

Eh... I don't mind this. College athletics are supposed to be fun. Bring the fun back. His team didn't lose because of this.

That shooting form is the most adorable thing. Bless her heart.
I'm starting to sound like an old southern lady.
