OT Video: Pete Carroll teaches tackling technique

Submitted by ken725 on

I found this video to be very informative and interesting. It is a bit long at 21 minutes, but Pete Carroll explains and teaches his "hawk tackling" system.

For the coaches or those with actual football knowledge/experience, is this something that you teach or was taught to you?

I play rugby, and I see football players at all levels making inefficient tackles all the time. Not to say I'm an expert, but it was drilled into us by our rugby coach to tackle this way. It's good to see some coaches are incorporating proper technique at the next level.

This is wonderful. I remember being taught to always get my head across the bow when tackling, and this technique eliminates this. I cringe when I saw player launching themsevles helmet first at the ballcarrier, because it is both unsafe and the tackler doesn't usually wrap with that style.

This was brought to Michigan by GERG.  He was a Carrol confidant.  I know we like to think of GERG as a moron but he did know a little something about football.  He is very connected in the coaching fraternity.

We use the roll tackle.

The roll tackle is very useful in space.

Many times, unless you are a linebacker tackling in a gap, you don't get a body position to do a two-hand "wrap" or "heads-up" tackle.

You learn pretty quick not to use your head and to use your shoulders and wrap as they do here to drive into and through bigger guys. I was an only child learning against the catholic kids and their older brothers at the catholic feeder school to Brother Rice. Played against many of the 1978 state champ kids from that BR team from grade school to 8th grade and at their grade school these kids played tackle on pebble covered asphalt. I guess 5 kids to a family you just let'em go but I thought they were nuts. Same deal against post grad Dondero HS kids as in Rugby in a tackle pickup game where everybody left bloodiied you had to wrap and use your shoulders.

I did find the rugby guys tougher that I knew. they seemed to like to inflict pain in anything they played.

Love hearing Spielman talking about tackling. That guy could coach any team I root for anyday.

Hey Pete tackle this:

"Let me ask you this: You guys know about things that go on in different places. Was I living with a grad student in Malibu, or was I living with my wife in my house? You could bet that if I were living with a grad student here in South Bend, it would be national news,"

this is ideal situation. most of the time you just gotta do whatever you can to bring the guy to the ground. this technique is great, but it rarely happens this way

As a previous poster metioned above, the most interesting aspect of this video I found was the lack of the "get your head across the ball carrier" type of instruction. In high school and college (DIII), we were always taught to "get your head across" the ball carrier as an effort to help ensure you didn't let a tacke slip through your hands. I think everyone who was taught via this method experienced the "slightly too late" tackle feelinig of getting a ball carrier's knee or shoulder directly to your head as you tried to make the tackle. Also, I always thought it made for awkward tackle attempts when tracking a man down the sideline, as it seemed to elimate your ability to both use the sideline to your advantage and to prevent a cutback. I really liked this video and thought it was presented in a clear manner that could certainly be used by high schools and junior high kids.
