OT - Video Editing Software

Submitted by MFreak on

I was in the mood to put together a hype video of my own since the anticipation is killing me. Are there any good free programs out there I could use? I've used windows movie maker before for simple stuff, but the windows 7 version is extremely dumbed down.

This is the best free software you can get:  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

Download the trial of Premiere Pro and you have it for a month, or until you can find (fairly easy) a serial key for it. Apple Final Cut Pro is still IMO the best editing software, but I don't think you can get a trial for it for free, IIRC.

HOWEVA, if you are used to consumer editing software or haven't edited before, you should expect a big learning curve.

Good luck and Go Blue!

Tried Virtual Dub and wasn't really liking it.

And I was trying to avoid "those" means Boyz. It hasn't stopped me before though, so I may just have to go that route.

As VideoTom and Boyz n da Pahokee said, Premiere Pro is great; however, if you're used to Movie Maker, I would suggest giving Premiere Elements a shot. It doesn't have all the features of Pro, which makes it easier to jump into. Plus, it's actually affordable (you can find it on sale for ~$60) if you're not into pirating stuff.

I've also used Pinnacle Studio, but not in a few years...in the past it's been kinda buggy, but you'd have to ask someone else about the current version. Hope that helps, and good luck!

I have experience with stuff beyond movie maker, but not since high school. I've just never had anything at my disposal for personal projects besides movie maker since then, mostly because it handled the basic stuff I needed. I'd probably still be fine using it if I still had XP and could use movie maker and not this windows live movie maker they have for 7.

If you are just looking for something basic with a fair bit of flexibility in editing then you can use Roxio Creator 2010...I have found their video editing software pretty reasonable to use in a number of applications. I too am an Apple fan for their editing software but it does have a learning curve.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm in the process of obtaining some software right now.

For anyone else who may read this, I have a question for which song I should use. I want to use something off of Recovery and I'm torn between Won't Back Down and Not Afraid. Any opinions on one vs. the other?
