OT - Video Editing Software
I was in the mood to put together a hype video of my own since the anticipation is killing me. Are there any good free programs out there I could use? I've used windows movie maker before for simple stuff, but the windows 7 version is extremely dumbed down.

I use Premiere Pro CS5. It can be free if you have the internet.

This is the best free software you can get: http://www.adobe.com/downloads/
Download the trial of Premiere Pro and you have it for a month, or until you can find (fairly easy) a serial key for it. Apple Final Cut Pro is still IMO the best editing software, but I don't think you can get a trial for it for free, IIRC.
HOWEVA, if you are used to consumer editing software or haven't edited before, you should expect a big learning curve.
Good luck and Go Blue!

VirtualDub might do what you're looking for, and at least it's free, plus it's decently easy to use if you just need to edit/cut/compress videos.

You aren't going to gain any friends by posting that video in every single thread. Care to stop?
To prove my point:

Tried Virtual Dub and wasn't really liking it.
And I was trying to avoid "those" means Boyz. It hasn't stopped me before though, so I may just have to go that route.

As VideoTom and Boyz n da Pahokee said, Premiere Pro is great; however, if you're used to Movie Maker, I would suggest giving Premiere Elements a shot. It doesn't have all the features of Pro, which makes it easier to jump into. Plus, it's actually affordable (you can find it on sale for ~$60) if you're not into pirating stuff.
I've also used Pinnacle Studio, but not in a few years...in the past it's been kinda buggy, but you'd have to ask someone else about the current version. Hope that helps, and good luck!

I have experience with stuff beyond movie maker, but not since high school. I've just never had anything at my disposal for personal projects besides movie maker since then, mostly because it handled the basic stuff I needed. I'd probably still be fine using it if I still had XP and could use movie maker and not this windows live movie maker they have for 7.

I can't help you out with making the video but if you haven't pick out a song yet. May i suggest using the song your going down by sick puppies or war by sick puppies.

If you are just looking for something basic with a fair bit of flexibility in editing then you can use Roxio Creator 2010...I have found their video editing software pretty reasonable to use in a number of applications. I too am an Apple fan for their editing software but it does have a learning curve.

I too use Roxio 2010...once you get used to it its fairly easy to put together a movie...I haven't learned the advanced stuff yet but every time I use it I find something new...that being said it's not free I think you can get it for under $100 though

My problem is I am still looking for the best way to get the HD footage onto my laptop. As soon as that is solved, look foward to many, many videos.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm in the process of obtaining some software right now.
For anyone else who may read this, I have a question for which song I should use. I want to use something off of Recovery and I'm torn between Won't Back Down and Not Afraid. Any opinions on one vs. the other?

Not Afraid, the lyrics at the begining kinda go with our situation. All getting together to get through the storm. Plus i think not afraid is just a better song.
