OT - Usain Bolt sets a 200m WR

Submitted by MH20 on
Usain Bolt set a world record in the 200m at the World Championships in Berlin today. He ran a 19.19, beating Michael Johnson's record of 19.32 his own record of 19.31 set in Beijing. This is of course just days after he set the 100m world record. *head asplode* Results | Recap

This is also why a typical relay split time is faster than the same athlete running a dash of the same distance. And (somewhat related) this is also why only the first swimmer in a relay can set the world record and not every swimmer. Anyway, if you look at his splits, you see that the first 20m is ~0.1s slower than any other 20m interval. This is also true for many of the other sprinters in the final as well...

Didn't he set the WR in Beijing? He beat his own record I think. Either way the man is absolutely amazing. I watched a track event that wasn't the Olympics for the first time today because of him.

It has to be; before Usain, the record was being broken by .01 seconds each time, and then here comes this guy who blows it up multiple times in a few years by not hundredths, but tenths of a second. There's no way its real; it's the same thing that happened with the home run record standing and people coming close, then all of a sudden Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa rocket past it. I call bullshit.

that has gone on in the last 5-6 years, track and field lost their marquee status in the Olympics and it is evident that you don't see it on primetime tv(though Phelps getting the attention played a role). The association would be stupid not to test Bolt. Bolt has taken every drug tests and passed with flying color. He's just that damn fast. After all, Ben Johnson got caught with Roids in the 80s. There are plenty of high profile track athletes who got busted with failed drug test.

but you're forgetting that most really good "designer" steroids are completely undetectable when they are used; they are designed so that the trace chemicals left after the degradation of testosterone or other sterols are broken down into things that aren't detected by today's testing; that's how many football and basketball players get away with taking steroids, is through "designer drugs".

I can't believe a clean runner could shave 0.72 seconds off his personal best 200 time (and like 0.35 off his 100) in two years. That just doesn't happen. Bolt was just another world-class runner until the summer of 2008, when he morphed into a demigod.

has the world records for the fastest 200m at ages 15, 16, and 17. He ran a sub 20 at 17. People in track and field thought he COULD be a once in a generation talent a la say Carl Lewis. So he was never really "just another world-class runner." That being said, I don't think anybody thought he could be a once in a century talent which I believe he is. I believe he will break his records and hold them for 30+ years.

Look, I understand that he's very tall, but he is nowhere near as jacked up as most other sprinters are. IIRC he actually looked relatively normal size in the Olympics. I think it's natural ability. But that's just me.

Don't know if you're refering to me or not Chitown, but I certainly made the comparison that had the Bolt at last years Olympics raced Johnson when he set the record, that Johnson would've won (which I still think). As it now (key word) stands I don't think Johnson would be able to hang with that 200m time and I'll be interested to see how Bolt does in the 400m. Obviously Bolt is faster than he was a year ago, which is kind of the goal, to get faster. I also don't think anyone except him will beat this record for a long time - barring the use of performance enhancers of course.
