I just think it's bullshit. Once you're that close to the goal, you should have to defend, not play games with the offsides rule. If I were Dictator of Sports I'd rewrite the rulebook so there's no such thing as offsides in the box.

The ball would have to get to the box first. Once there, offsides isn't a consideration til it leaves.

I remember the story about that supposedly being that the US offered Mexico to hold the game in LA in front of what would've been a very friendly crowd if Mexico would move their game out of Azteca. They refused so we said, fine, we'll find somewhere that's nice and cold in January.

A lot of Costa Rica's players play in Scandinavia. This wasn't ideal for them but it's not like they all live in Costa Rica year round.
