because he was at his sister's wedding and got in very late. I don't know if that's really experimenting so much as going with the players who are ready.
OT: USA v Jamaica Gold Cup Open Thread
Oh great info! I just got the tweet of the lineup and couldn't understand why he wasn't starting. That makes sense.
I hate to say this, but I actually hope we do lose so that we finally send Bradley packing. His style of play may have worked in MLS, but it will never succeed at the international level. Gulati needs to swallow his pride and sack his golden boy Bradley, and then admit he doesn't know everything about the game and hand complete roster control over to Jurgen Klinsman in order to bring him on board. Is it really that big of a problem to Gulati that the manager of the senior team have control of the rosters at the younger levels as well as the senior squad? That's all Klinsman wants in order to take the reigns, but Gulati is too stubburn of a mule to give it to him.
That's like rooting for umich to lose in order to fire Rodriguez. Both are crappy ways of looking at the situation.
As bad as the central defense has been for team USA these last few games. I don't see how they can continue to bench Gooch?
Because Gooch has lost it and is now there for emergencies only.
Highlighting one of Bradley's recurring issues, realizing that players have lost it only after naming them to tournament rosters.
When is Bradley going to give up on the Kljestan experiment? The guy just can't play at the international level. I would honestly rather see Freddy in there than Sacha.
Dempsey got in at 2am, Landycakes at 7am.
I was fairly indifferent about them missing practice time for the weddings, but I presumed they'd be back in plenty of time for the night before the game to get a full night's rest and be fresh for the game. That's kind of ridiculous and frankly I'd be pissed if I were the other MNT players.
Seriously? If Donovan hasn't earned your respect by now. No American player ever will.
Donovan has my respect. Still think it sucks a large one that they skipped out for weddings.
too. Also, we don't know details--flight might have been delayed, etc.
Watching some of their highlights from this tourney thus far during the pre-game show. They look fast and dangerous upfront.
That's actually a good sign for American soccer. That means we have more and more players playing in the leagues over seas, which are quite frankly, better than MLS. If we are ever going to compete with the best in the world, we need nearly every member of our Men's senior national team, to be playing top flight football in Europe.
My steam still says will begin shortly
Wow what a wiff on the rebound for the rastas
phew!!!! wow O_o!
Well shit. Mexican Dracoulia is here to hand out a few more yellow cards.
Jozy is down... shiiiiit
Hopefully Jozy is just having cramps. But it doesn't look good,
Bradley is gonna be tested tactically here, loses his target forward in a 4-2-3-1. I don't think Agudelo is able to play that lone forward (I don't think Jozy can either frankly).
And of course Bradley did not put Wondo on the bench.
Move Dempsey up top now?
has a lower leg thing. Happened on a slide tackle a couple of minutes ago. He gave it a go, then went back down. Looks like he's done for the day.
The US with 6 guys in the box, and somehow don't get a shot off. Good pressure though.
The decision to only bring only 3 forwards is really looking questionable at this point. No Jozy, and Wondo looking like he's not up to this level, leaves us with only Agueldo up front. Not only is he far from proven, but if the US advances, you're going to be asking a young guy to play a lot of minutes over a week.
He can always move Dempsey up top and bring on another midfielder, either Donavon or Freddy in an attacking role from the mdfield if we need a goal.
It's not so much a problem here as it will be in games if we advance. That's a lot of minutes at this level for a very young player. But maybe it allows him to put Donovan, Bradley, and Sasha/Bedoya on the field at the same time, which might make our attack more creative.
The univision annoucer's pronunciation of Lichaj is awesome...
High school Spanish does NOT allow me to comprehend a futbol game called on Univision.
I like how they say Golazo. It sounds like thery're saying Go A55hole - A55hole-A55hole-A55hole.
univison does not work in greece
but it seems Greece does not give them streaming rights
I think they're being streamed at either concacaf.com or goldcup.org
Loves the soccer face-off
Jones picks up a silly yellow
A question from a budding soccer fan: whats the importance of the Gold Cup? I know its not the world cup, but does it affect it? What are soccers different tournaments? Thanks
It's the regional championship for the US (North America, Central America, and the Caribbean form one of Fifa's six federations). It's played every two years. The big benefit of winning this tournament is a berth in the confederation's cup, which is kind of a test run for the World Cup, the year before the WC occurs.
Close with the bicycle after Sasha almost beats GK with bouncing ball.
Now Sasha puts in a nice cross for Bedoya to head just wide.
He's having his best game for the US in quite a while. Playing faster than he used to.
Sacha's service on corner's has been dreadful and he has been non-existent with the exception of a couple of attacking moves. I'd take him off at the half.
I disagree about the corners. He's put the ball right where the sets seem to ask him to. The corner that preceded Dempsey's bike was particularly good, that's a set play to head the ball back across the six.
Habia una "poste doble." No es bueno.
lol, if you need classes let me know, Ahhh, terribles posteos dobles!!, los odio!!! , that'd be better =)
Espanol de la escuela secondaria no es suficiente para hablar ni escribir en una manera good.
Eso es que recuerdo: Maria trabaja en la biblioteca, y Pedro come una hamburguesa. Es todo.
And he fires the left footed shot off his right knee.
Momentum clearly with the States at the moment.
They've gotta score soon. RIght?
here toward the end of the first half!
Jamaica is hoping to get this to the half. They're struggling to slow the US running through midfield.
Is there local radio for this? (ann arbor)
watch it on your computer. Nice stream.
...signals the start of play for the second half.
Jones (???) on the deflection off the defender
GET THE **** IN JERMAINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a tremendously fortunate deflection.
Goal- Jermaine Jones off a deflection.
I can see Bradley going defensive way too early with the lead, yet again, and taking off Dempsey for Edu and pushing his kid further forward in attack.
EDIT: I'm happy to be wrong, as it appears Landon is being brought on. We need to keep attacking against Jamaica.
DOWN IN FRONT
that stadium. Agudello--on a more pertinent note--looking sharp.
Dive-ola; glad we didn't score on that. Who is that, Lalas: "You know what? That wasn't even close. . ."
Verlander. Damn is he good.
Straight Red there, no question about it.
C-Ya! Jamaica down to 10 men.
Jamaican dude pulled down Jones... kinda.
Lord I hate flopping.
Not sure if the dishonesty by Jones was worse or the decision making. If he doesn't go down and runs in four on nothing its got to be an 80% chance of scoring, much more important than a one-man advantage well into the second half. So it was dumb as well as bullshittey.
Didn't look offside to me... but what do I know
The rule is one defender plus the keeper, he was past the keeper which makes it offside. The linesman got it correct. Whoever Donovan dropped it to should have teed it up from outside the box.
The replay looked offside by kind of a lot.
Was that an offside trap involving the goalie?
Yes when the goalie came out he became the forward defender despite the fact that someone dropped back to goal. It appeared to be the right call. Saw that in the world cup too.
Good goal there. USA got this.
Dempsey makes it 2-0 U.S. on a very composed goal. He is having a great game today.
People love to build up Donovan, but Dempsey has been more important to the success of this team over the last several years than Donovan has.
Dempsey has to be he best US attack player ever. Who else has established themselves as a premier goal scorer for a team in one of the top couple of leagues in the world? For all Donovan's success, he was never able to do that in a few tries in Germany. His last loan spell at Everton looked promising for the first time, but sadly it looks like he'll never get another opportunity to prove that he can do it at the highest level.
Brian McBride was a fantastic attack player for the U.S., but he was more of a pure striker and finisher, where as; Dempsey is more of a creative player that comes out of the attacking midfield.
The jersey exchange in soccer is one of the neatest things in sports.
Final score- U.S 2-0.
Night and day difference in quality of play from the U.S side when compared to the Guadaloupe game.
Have a great Father's Day everyone!
US opponent will be Panama. Bring them on. I'm not scared
I only caught the last 25 minutes when a friend of mine in Greece figured out his school's VPN and then could get the stream (I am lost on how to get umich's working)
However, we looked to be playing open and dominating on the ball (as we should up a man)
I hope jozy can recover but with the short time between games it looks like its all on juan from here on out
also i wish just once we wouldn't give a team a stellar chance to scor eon us in the first 10 minutes
