OT - U.S. Open (Open) Thread
I wouldn't mind seeing any of those guys winning. I am hoping Steve Stricker wins though. Would be awesome to see him win his first major. Also, I agree with anyone but Phil winning.
Anyone but Phil. Would like to see Mahan win, if not than maybe Charl Schwartzel since I have him in a betting pool.
Tiger was my first pick. After he put himself out of contention, I'm currently pulling for Phil.
Never met Phil in person, and I don't follow any news about players...so I'll bite. I'm curious why some people here want anyone but Phil to win.
I'm not going to retort or start some stupid back and forth about the guy. Just curious if there is something I don't know about him. Responses such as "never liked the guy, seems to rub me the wrong way" are perfectly acceptable.

I havent ever met him either, I think its one of two things. I played golf pretty competitively in high school, and I got the reputation of being a Phil type of player and falling apart after a blow up hole, or playing a mistake free round that was pretty good. I dislike him immensely because I was compared to him. I am also just not a fan of his game, and he rubs me the wrong way.
He seems like a fantastic family man though. On Father's day, and with Tiger Wood's personal struggles, this cannot be emphasized enough.
I would love if anyone would compare to a successful golfer. Not a dig to you at all, I am mostly just saying. Phil can be up and down, but his game is still great
He doesn't bang hookers and act like an a**hole on the golf course.
Personally I'd like Phil to win but I think a lot of people believe that the media has Tebowed him this week, i.e. shoved him down our throats. They have sensationalized his "cross-country, redeye flight from his daughters' 8th grade graduation" (on his private jet...that probably has a fully functional bed) and used it as justification that Phil needs to win today on Father's Day...and his birthday no less.
Good point. When I first heard about it this is how it sounded in my head.
He got a redeye flight because he chose to compete in the US open and attend his daughters graduation. His choice.
When you added up the hours, the man got 7...possibly 8? hours of sleep total. Yes it was spaced out but it was plenty of sleep. Personally I don't mind rooting for Phil but I did view this as being overblown.
I just cant wait for these players to tackel the last 5 holes. Who ever in contention plays those at even par probably wins.
Lol at whoever put my OP as flamebait because I don't want Phil winning. Phil just rubs me the wrong way. I believe he isn't as genuine as people think he is. Obviously, this is just my opinion and I could be wrong. I am not here to argue or anything like that, but I would just prefer if Phil didn't win.
Pulling for Phil to win his first US Open. Quite the strategy he has going with no driver in the bag and 5 wedges and it has worked well for him so far. Go Phil!

Never been a golfer, so don’t follow the sport too closely, but was thinking that Tiger Woods’ current five-year winless streak in Majors most likely makes Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 Major Championships pretty safe. Then I saw that Nicklaus won four Majors after his 37th birthday, so Woods might have that going for him, because he’s 37 now. But, between 1962 when he won his first Major and 1980 when he won his 17th Major, Nicklaus never went longer than three years between winning a Major.
Maybe the question now becomes: Will Lindsay Vonn break the women’s record for most World Cup ski race victories (she needs four wins to break the record of 62 held by Annemarie Moser-Pröll of Austria) and the men’s World Cup record (86, held by Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden) before Tiger Woods wins another Major?
Vonn would need to win 28 World Cup ski races to be considered the winningest World Cup skier ever. She had 12 World Cup wins in her last full season, 2011-2012, and six World Cup wins last season before suffering serious injuries in a January 2013 race.

Remember Jack also smoked (at least early in his career), to my knowledge Tiger doesn't smoke and is a workout fiend. Nicklaus' workout regimin was an occasional tennis match from my understanding.
Actually, Jack Nickalus’ long Majors winless streak came when he was in his 40s. Between age 40 when he won the PGA Championship and age 46 when he won the Masters in 1986, he didn’t win a Major. In his 30s, Nicklaus never went more then three years without wining a Major (from the PGA win in 1975 at age 35 to the British Open win in 1978 at age 38.) He won two Majors at age 40 – the U. S. Open and the PGA Championship.
From age 32 to age 37, Nicklaus won five Majors: the Masters and U. S. Open in 1972, the PGA Championship in 1973, and the Masters and PGA Championship in 1975.
From age 32 to age 37, Tiger Woods has won one Major so far: the 2008 U. S. Open. He has the British Open and PGA Championship left to play in 2013 before he turns 38 on December 30.
A couple of factors playing against Tiger:
Left knee issues: Tiger has had multiple surgeries on his left knee and I think it is going to become more of a problem with each passing year.
Level of competition: IMO there are more good-to-great players on the Tour these days than there were in Jack's day. I think the advances in equipment technology have also leveled the playing field a little.
Five years ago it was almost a foregone conclusion that Tiger would break Jack's record. Now, I wouldn't bet on it happening.

Stamos and others- what is the reason for not rooting for Phil? I personally always root for Phil as he appears genuine and I love listening to his analysis/interviews. I am interested in the opposite view from others
but his anwers in interviews almost sound like they're coming directly out of his sports psychologists mouth. Nothing feels very natural about his on course demeanor and pressence, it feels and looks like he trying to be what his sports psychologist wants him to be, almost forcing it. I don't get that vibe from anyone else.
He won the US Amateur back when I played and if you had asked me then, I would have said he'll win 2 or 3 Open's before his career is done. Ultimately too many loose tee shots have cost him too many chances to win these things.
On the course he does something to rub me the wrong way. Maybe it is the lack of the killer instinct or the fact that he kind of is a whiner. But besides that, I used to lack the killer instinct when I was a competitive golfer and I earned the nickname Phil once I lost a couple matches after a blow up hole.
