OT: US Open End of Day 1

No clue how to embed a Vine but Westwood hit a flyer straight into the bleachers on the sixth. Only thing missing were the umpires, some hot dogs, and some beer. His face is priceless.

Also, happy to see Phil play see well so hopefully he can keep it up. Tiger needs to get something going. He doesn't even need to hit his driver on 14 holes.

if folks didn't hear, had like almost no sleep last night after traveling from his home where his daughter graduated from 8th grade, if what I hear is correct.  He should sleep very well tonight.

is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.  I literally cannot believe the turn he makes on the ball, as though his spine can selectively choose when to inhibit motion and when to just lay back and take some time off.  (He may want to ask Freddy Couples about the long term side effects of such obnoxious ability however, he won't be 30-whatever he is forever).

Tiger's wrist will be an issue but he can play through pain, I think he has been since like 2000.  His problem is not making uphill 8 foot birdie putts for crying out loud.  Not a confident stroke rigtht now at all.

Perhaps consider modifying this to US Open Day 2 Open Thread.  I like to talk some golf.

You have to assume Phil is going to be strong. Most of the par 4s have wedge coming in to tucked pins. Phil wedge games is probably the best on your even if the results haven't been there. Tigers wedge game has been so on and off the last few years and probably isn't going to be in line for victory this week unless he gets something rolling quick. Putter looked shaky the first couple holes too. The stimp meter is suppose to be at a 13 tomorrow which is going to be crazy fast.

Tiger looks like shit. 4 holes with the driver? Hell, maybe two. Phil isn't even carrying a driver. Will be an exciting tourney with or without Tiger, but not much looking good from him right now. But he is just over 1/8 finished with the tourney. Lots of time.

everyone was saying how this course was too short to test the world's best golfers..

After watching today, It's safe to say that you better hit your spots or miss in the right spots or this course will punish you.

If the greens get faster, I'd expect Tiger to start getting things going with the putter. He's always seemed to roll the ball better on the faster greens (Augusta, past US Opens, Sawgrass), and with all the rain yesterday he just didn't seem to get a feel for the green speeds. He certainly had his opportunities yesterday, but couldn't hit anything but that ridiculous 50 footer (that would have gone 10 feet past had it not hit dead center). If he putts just a bit better he's at least even right now.

Tiger looks like he might be getting into a groove now, with birdies at 2 and 4 and just striped a drive on the extremely tough 5th hole. With as difficult as the course is starting to play, unless Mickelson goes nuts this afternoon he could be right in the thick of things at the start of the third round.

EDIT: Well, so much for that. Tiger goes flag hunting on 7, short sides himself, and ends up with a bogey to drop back to +3 overall. Putting better than he was in round 1, but he's playing really poorly when he misses the green. 8 and 10 are relatively easy, so maybe he gets it back before the end of the round.
