Could this be the explanation behind Dave Brandon's extended timetable for making a decision?
December 8th, 2010 at 2:52 PM ^
This wouldn't have relevance to whether or not Rodriguez is staying (unless you think Brandon was banking on Heater as the lynchpin of whether or not to keep RR?)
December 8th, 2010 at 2:56 PM ^
- "Michigan Man"?......check
- West Virginia (state of) ties for relatio0nship with RR?...........check
- Successful defensive background / experience?.....check
- Recruiting ties in Fla and SEC territory?........BONUS
-ADDED Bonus...potential replacement for RR if 2011 goes bust..(mainly to quiet the Blue Hairs and RR haters)
December 8th, 2010 at 2:56 PM ^
Interesting thought, maybe the whole season review schedule and refusal to change it has as one of its components that it is not about RR but about assistant coaches or DC and that is why RR has appeared to be unhappy because he feels responsible for those guys who came with him......
December 8th, 2010 at 3:05 PM ^
Except I don't think RR knew about this ahead of time. I think Heater gave Brandon a heads up that this might happen and they were waiting on Meyer to make a decision and an announcement. But I agree that RR's distress has been mostly about concern for his assistant coaches and their families.

Jesse Ventura would like to have a word with you.
December 8th, 2010 at 5:13 PM ^
I'm sorry if I'm wiffing on your sarcasm or something, but how do Heater's ties to Mullen stack up v. Rich Rod? How do his ties and job security at Florida stack up v. that at Michigan. I don't have sources or insider knowledge about either question, but the second question's answer doesn't look in Michigan's favor right now.
December 8th, 2010 at 2:48 PM ^
I remember reading Meyer's "heart" troubles were in fact due to gastroesophageal reflux, which can generally be easily corrected. His new retirement sounds like it's more for his family. I fully expect him to be back coaching in the next 3-5 years when his kids are older.
Mullen to Florida seems so obvious. I don't know what that does to our bowl game chances, probably improves them.

oops nm
December 8th, 2010 at 2:50 PM ^
drawing this thing out is becoming lebron-esque.
December 8th, 2010 at 2:53 PM ^
He can't find a stable situation to save his life.
Either that, or he is somehow the Typhoid Mary of coaching stability.
December 8th, 2010 at 2:54 PM ^
A jolt heard around the recruiting boards!
December 8th, 2010 at 2:54 PM ^
Good, now the Miss. State fans and players can go through this whole is our coach going to be here next year thing that we're experiencing right now. It's maddening and people at Stanford, Pitt, Miss. State, Florida and others can live it with us.
December 8th, 2010 at 2:54 PM ^
If Mullen accepts the HC position pre-bowl, that could make this interesting.
Do they play inspired for the interim coach, or does this game get a whole lot easier?
December 8th, 2010 at 2:54 PM ^
Meyer should end up on ESPN next year. I'm guessing he gets a "trial run" as a third man in the booth at one of the bowl games if he decides to step down immediately. It would be a win/win; Meyer could stay around the game without killing himself, while ESPN would benefit from his knowledge and coaching connections.
It's certainly a lot more money than Meyer could make from a "day job."
December 8th, 2010 at 3:02 PM ^
The Florida AD said he'd coach in the Gator Bowl as his last game.
December 8th, 2010 at 3:15 PM ^
For which team?
December 8th, 2010 at 3:21 PM ^
I meant to say Outback, when I went to edit it wouldn't let me for some reason.
In my defense, my head has been saying Gator all week and I probably just said Gator because of Florida. In short...fuck finals, I'm going crazy right now.
December 8th, 2010 at 2:56 PM ^
Guess the recruits last year should feel a little gullible, maybe god only wanted him to coach them for one year. who knows

December 8th, 2010 at 3:06 PM ^
I don't even want to think about how much time ESPN and all the MSM would devote to figuring out if the QB and coach had retired.
On the other hand, maybe they could just send one private jet for the both of them? Save some cash?

Good luck Urban, great coach...landscape of college football forever changing.
Nice to have a job that earns one enough money, that in just a few years your future is secure and when you've had it, you can quit.

Three times? You must really like him.
December 8th, 2010 at 4:32 PM ^
Not sure why that happened. When I hit save the screen went to bad gateway, I thought the comment was lost...sorry
December 8th, 2010 at 3:13 PM ^
Meyer might be leaving Florida because he wants to coach Michigan
December 8th, 2010 at 3:14 PM ^
This retirement may be only a coincidence, but I thought to myself that if Brandon goes away from RR and that its not Harbaugh, that I'd like it to be Meyer. Perhaps Meyer and family wants to return to live in the Midwest???? And note that he has an out in his contract.... for the M job, the ND job, and the OSU job.
December 8th, 2010 at 3:24 PM ^
Dan Mullen eta to flordia?
December 8th, 2010 at 3:25 PM ^
can feel like he wants to spend more time with his family so we don't have to deal with him anymore? A man can hope...
December 8th, 2010 at 4:19 PM ^
I don't want tressell to retire until we get a few more wins against him. NO buckeye should be able to retire with those numbers against us.
December 8th, 2010 at 5:52 PM ^
good point. I redact my previous statement.
December 8th, 2010 at 3:27 PM ^
what about his dream with Shariff Floyd?

December 8th, 2010 at 4:56 PM ^
Not into all the conspiracy theories. But what effect does this have on Hart. If RR is fired is michigan still #1 now without a Urban Meyer Florida team. Is Florida still the place? Or are we looking at Alabama or Auburn back into the mix?
TomVH help!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, If RR is retained say a press release Jan 2nd is it to late for Hart to still enroll early? Just curious I think Dee is an amazingly gifted back that UM has never seen before. My man crush depends on his commitment.
December 8th, 2010 at 5:09 PM ^
I feel like dee hart would follow richrod to Florida but is there any chance that a potential harbaugh hire could bring hart back to us?
December 8th, 2010 at 5:26 PM ^
RR won't go to florida....i can almost guarentee it'll be mullens. it makes a lot of sense
December 8th, 2010 at 5:22 PM ^
Is it just me or does this seem to be a little fishy? I'm not a RR hater, but if he gets another years and there's no improvemnt and gets fired does anyone else see Urban Meyer comming to Michigan? Just think about it, he problably wants out of the SEC because he hasn't been challenged as much lately and everyone generally thinks of Florida as a top football program. Now if he came to Michigan, being from Ohio it would be like a woody vs bo part 2! Or do you see him more leaning towards the Denver Broncos seeing as how the have Tim Tebow?
Would love to hear your thoughts:

Bo wasn't a Michigan man, and RR is def. not a Michigan man. Meyer likes to run the spread offense, what we're equipped for, plus we have Denard Roinson!!!!! Meyer also likes to be challenged as a coach, what bigger challenge than take Michigan beat osu and go to a National Title game, and Win it!!
